    Episode 150 - Grease 2

Also, Maxwell Caulfield's birth name is Maxwell Newby - fair enough, looks like he needed a pseudonym for some unspecified reason, that happens. But his first credited role, in 1967's Accident (as an 8 year old), he was already in the pseudonym game, credited as Maxwell Findlater. Is it possible that when they asked him what his first pseudonym might be, he told them he'd 'find one later' and was completely misunderstood?

So does June find Maxwell Caulfield dreamy today?

I'm seven pages in and the fight seems to be simmering down. The thing that drives me on is that the thread is TWENTY NINE PAGES LONG. What on earth could come up that sparks another 22 pages? Good lord. I'm going back in. *edit, forty minutes later* Wow. Amazing. I can't imagine how much fun/depressing that might have been to watch unfold in real time. I was pleased to see that that thread was what inspired 24 Hour Party Pizza to start a forum account, so something good came of it! And in the whole 'who from the HDTGM canon should play you in the dramatic reading', I call Adam Scott. I mostly enjoyed the discussion of impending babies for forum members. Belated congrats! Ugh. My grading's gone to shit now. Back to it.

Whoa, I just made the mistake of slipping down the rabbit hole into the 'Can't Stop the Music' thread (before my time here). That was... unpleasant.

Ack! So conflicted! I am drowning under a mountain of grading and I need to get it done by this afternoon to ensure a nice weekend, but I really really want to blow it off to listen to the ep, particularly reading all the comments so far. Save me some juicy C+Os, guys!

I put on 'Cool Rider' to torment my wife as she repairs Christmas Tree bulbs and Bridie, my nearly-five year old, materialised next to me, transfixed. She demanded I replay the song four times before I chased her away. Outsmarted. http://imgur.com/a/AXYcn

There's a bunch, it seems, both set and shot there: https://en.wikipedia...n_Austin,_Texas https://en.wikipedia...n_Austin,_Texas My eye goes directly to 'Machete'. Get Danny Trejo back! There's also the Texas Chainsaw Massacres, including the one with Renee Zellweger and Matthew McConaughey...

Phew! Surely there's an Earwolf Board Veteran VIP roped-off area, no? My greatest hope with this Austin live show is that all of the board contributors who are in attendance identify themselves as such during the Q and A sessions. I think having Board All-Stars in the room (particularly if you all went as a group!) would be a huge deal. To us at least.

The teacher who assigned the essay with the subject of 'The Fall of Rome' and 'William the Conqueror' was really mailing in their syllabus that week. Narrow it down a bit, Rydell.

In a department meeting at work at the moment so sneaking in another post since this is on my mind. IMDb tells us that the Frenchie character was gradually written out over the course of the film, which explains why she’s not involved later on. But the presence of Frenchie, as a tie back to the past, suggests a strong connection between the T-Birds and Pink Ladies between films. However, Frenchie, who wears a Pink Lady jacket throughout, NEVER interacts with the current group. No one questions this old lady on campus in this exclusive jacket. It reminds me of the Tonehangers in ‘Pitch Perfect’ – old guys who can’t let go of the past who hang around the young kids. Or Zac Efron in ‘Neighbours 2’. But, as I said before, if this Pink Lady club is something people aspire to – like Pamela Adlon brings up in her ambition about what she’ll do when she’s a senior in the Pink Ladies – then surely Stephanie et al know Frenchie from before? And surely, if Michael is Sandy’s cousin, his link to a legendary past Pink Lady must have some cache? And why do Michael and Frenchie never ever discuss their connection to Sandy beyond one token mention? And how are English Michael and Australian Sandy related? My favourite part is the moment when the headmistress makes her announcement to the school in the first period of the first day of the year, and Frenchie has already constructed a complex, dangerous-looking, exploding chemistry experiment. Within 10 minutes of the first class starting! Okay, okay, enough. Back to the meeting.

This movie is also the film acting debut of Lorna Luft, Judy Garland's way less talented daughter. I couldn't figure out how we were supposed to feel about her character (Paulette) in relation to Johnny Nogarelli. It seemed like she was set up to be the Rizzo-style character, except she's a fallback for Johnny after he's been dumped by Stephanie. So she allows this guy to treat her like shit for the entire movie, and then be happy that he's settled on her at the end once Stephanie unmasks the Cool RiderTM? In the world of this movie, this is the same school, but two years later. Familiar characters from the first movie exist (the headmistress, Frenchy???, Eugene??????!) but if we follow the timeline, we must assume that Johnny and Stephanie were sophomores when Danny Zuko and Sandy Newton-John were dancing around in the first one. So HOW HAS SO MUCH CHANGED IN TWO YEARS? Why are they all on motorbikes now? Did car-racing become verboten after the race against the Scorpions in the LA River? By the way, the leader of the bad guy motorcycle gang is the same leader of the bad-guy drag racing gang in the first movie. I want to see a movie starring that guy, showing how he hauled himself up from the humiliation of losing a drag race to Greased Lightning, biding his time over two years, to found an outlaw motorcycle gang, only to be 'defeated' by Cool RiderTM whose superpower seems to be riding at things until they get out of the way or fall down. That's a movie I'd watch. I have SO MUCH MORE to say about this movie but I really should wait til the ep. Apologies for multiposting.

Did you know that Grease 2 was supposed to be the second in a series of four films, as well as a TV series? When number 2 tanked so hard, number 3 was put on ice. For 25 years. When it was finally tweaked. And released as...

    Episode 149.5 - Minisode 149.5

Count me in to team TurnOffYourDamnPhone: I look forward to trailers, because I don't see many of the blockbusters in the cinema (what with having kids) so getting to see the supercut of what's to come is always a huge highlight for me. I mean, the question I had for the bozo who phoned in to Paul was, 'WHAT is so important on your phone that you and your wife need to be studiously tapping even after the lights have gone down in the cinema'? I can completely understand if someone's monitoring an eBay auction or is down to the final minutes in a Clash of Clans War (whoo boy, guilty), but if it's just mindless googling, COME ON. I say, that if the cinema has dipped the lights, that's the universal signal to say 'shh. It's starting.' I always get annoyed when I'm at a film that only shows a couple of trailers: I look forward to 3-4 good ones, particularly prior to big films. If the guy in front of me has his phone on, that takes me right out. Turn it off! On a related note (and linking to another thread), I saw 'Hotel Transylvania 2' with my kids last year, which wasn't my favourite theatregoing experience ever, because not only was the movie pretty bad, but two separate fathers in the rows around me decided that they would show their disdain for this children's movie by being on their cellphones incessantly throughout. Packed cinema, googling merrily away. And, of course, because we're Canadians, we're all too polite to say anything. So I thought I would wait a year and a half and then complain in a forum entirely unrelated to that movie. That'll show him.

    Episode 149.5 - Minisode 149.5

Watched 'Grease 2' last night with my wife, who once played Jan in the stage version of the original musical, so had a real vested interest in the world of Rydell. As I've said before, I loved this movie as a kid - my sister and I used to watch it on a loop, and knew all the words to all of the songs - so it was with dismay that I realised that this one wouldn't be nearly as much fun as I'd promised my wife (who had never seen it). What a mess. The 50's aesthetic of the first one was completely thrown out, so all of the songs were unlike each other (I think only two of the songs were composed by the same person) and aside from some half-hearted references to President Kennedy and the nuclear crisis, this is definitely a movie of the early 80's, not early 60's. I videoed sections of the movie as it played out and texted them to my sister, who was struck with the same nostalgia I was. The difference was, I was watching the movie as a whole, so was realising just how horrible it was, while she was seeing it in snippets and reminiscing about how she loved Michelle Pfeiffer's character as a girl. Hugely satisfying to see Pamela Adlon as a teenage wannabe 'Pink Lady'. Also, I enjoyed seeing Christopher McDonald as a T-Bird: when I first saw 'Happy Gilmore' I mistakenly thought it was Jeff Conaway (Kenickie) who played Shooter McGavin: watching this I realised I was just mixing up my T-Birds. I reiterate: I can't wait to hear Jason talk about the 'Reproduction' song.

I'm pretty fond of his John C. Reilly. Someone on the boards suggested HDTGM should do The Vampire's Assistant, and I thought it would be awesome for PFT to do the show in his JCR character. Actually, now that I think about it, that's a terrible idea. No, my list is Dame Sir Andrew John C. Reilly Ice-T Cake Boss (3 and 4 interchangeable)

Yessssss! Vindicated! Edit: I'm well aware that it's an idiotic name, but every time I see my user name I hear Paul F. Tompkins as the Cake Boss say "now lemme go into my cake bug tranch", and it makes me smile. I'm not even sure the Cake Boss is in my top three of PFT characters...

Agreed on the agreement: let's continue this discussion for a million posts. Everyone will be fine with it. Also agreed on Jimmy Fallon. Like, WTF is up with that? Especially the terrible intro about his Classical Training? Guh. Maybe I should go back to Kit Walker. I like it pretty well but it's the first time I've ever used that username and I wasn't devoted to it. This current one was a whim after hearing a phrase in the Pod F. Tompkast. It doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, does it? I think I only won the No-Prize last week because of the weird name, so maybe I should decide that it's done its job and I should switch back. Or, maybe i should hold a 'Fate of What's Up Hot Dog' poll like in the waning days of Comedy Death Ray Radio? Everyone in here has such epic usernames - distinct, succinct, original - that coming up with the right complementary one is a tough thing.

I'm glad it's not just me that isn't stirred by Kelly Clarkson - I like her generally and I read about how hard it was for her to record this while pregnant, but the layers and distortions takes so much of the emotion out of it. I agree about the absence of Lin - when he shows up in 'Wrote My Way Out' it felt like a flood of familiarity: and hearing him name-check Maurice Sendak right off the bat was amazing. I really love the Interludes - particularly the remix of 'Take a Break', which could be much longer. Really love Sia's take on 'Satisfied' and impressed by the narrative flip of 'Say Yes To This'. Love both 'Dear Theodosia' versions (I can't get enough Regina Spektor). Most of all I think the track I'll come back to most will be 'Immigrants (We Get the Job Done)' - so glad to see K'NAAN get some big exposure.

Anyone get the Hamilton Mixtape today? It's stunning in parts. A bit uneven in others. I think it needs a bunch of listens to really figure it out, but overall, pretty great. I'm disappointed in how over-produced 'Quiet Uptown' is, with Kelly Clarkson: the simplicity of the original is its strength. It just played through and I feared that I would be reduced to a quivering mess in this coffee shop, but it left me cold. Anyway, would love to hear everyone's opinion!

I remember absolutely LOVING this movie as a kid. My sister and I recorded it off the television and watched it on a loop. It wasn't until years later that I read something that referred to how bad Grease 2 was, that I thought back and realised just how wrong we'd been. I'm hoping that the nostalgia factor hauls me through, but to the fellow board posters who have said they don't like the first Grease movie - you will SUPER HATE the second one. Same goes if you really, really love the first one. This is a mess of a movie, no two ways about it. I cannot wait to hear Jason talk about the Reproduction song.

I thought so too - I certainly got the sense that it was a Disney property, but maybe it's the proximity of the June-thinks-Daisy-Duck-is-Daffy story that made me think that. Is there anyone on the forum in California who is planning to go this event? The way it sounds, it seems unlikely these will surface after the fact...
