    Pinball & HDTGM Movies

This is fascinating information - when you say 'pinball collectors', I assume that means you own multiple machines, or does that mean you're an aficionado on (what used to be) arcades? How much would one of those classic machines run you? How many do you own? They seem like they'd be a tough thing to have a large number of, given their size, but maybe that just exposes my ignorance. OT: 'Krull'. Damn. That's just begging for HDTGM treatment. I have a buddy who loves that movie with all his heart. He'll be delighted to know that the pinball tie-in lives up to his standards.

    Episode 144.5 - Minisode 144.5

I had to look this up because I assumed this was a joke. But no... http://www.crowdfundinsider.com/2014/08/46224-vampire-academy-team-launches-new-indiegogo-campaign-sequel-frostbite/ https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/frostbite-a-vampire-academy-film#/ They raised $254,000! Less than a third of what they wanted! Taylor Anne, I'm assuming that the perks listed are things that people who know about the books would be familiar with?

No, but she looks a lot like how Diana Palmer-Walker looked in the comics. Kristy Swanson was just terribly cast in that terrible movie. Ugh. (Catherine Zeta-Jones was ideally cast as Sala, though: she looked just right)

    Episode 144.5 - Minisode 144.5

This will be the first HDTGM movie I will be watching with my wife, in the attempt to expose her to the podcast. Reading the comments, though, I fear that this may be a bad gateway entry for her. Ah well: wish me luck!

    Episode 144.5 - Minisode 144.5

Just picked up a copy: I get the feeling that this will be much more fun than Stealth. Oh, and are we allowed to note in here that we're pleased to be read out in the minisodes? Because I'm very happy I got a comment in this week. I promise to be cooler about it next time!

    Monster Trucks (2017)

Was I the only one who caught the acrid stench of the same plot structure of 'How to Train Your Dragon' in here? I'm seeing a lot of Hiccup finding Toothless, fearing him then eventually training him, finding out he's awesome, only to be interrupted by Astrid, who has to be won over before she too realises that the monster isn't so monstrous. But y'know, in this case, with trucks. I am heartened by the presence of Tom Lennon in this. That gives me hope that this is supposed to be light, and silly. That monster in the truck just evokes this guy to me... I feel like he also looks like some other movie reptile that I can't put my finger on. Maybe Nessie from the Ted Danson classic 'Loch Ness'?

    Episode 144 - Stealth

Okay. Updated EDI'S JUKEBOX. Kind of a cheat because I have been listening to podcasts in the car today (I am five years behind on Comedy Bang! Bang!, listening from the start: it's still Comedy Death Ray in my car) but these were the last ten I listened to right through, as per the rules of the game. 1. - Steel Panther (bad start)2. Helpless - Hamilton Original Cast Recording (improving) 3. - Epic Rap Battles of History4. - Regurgitator5. - William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet Soundtrack, Volume II6. - Hilltop Hoods Feat. Sia*7. - Regina Spektor*8. - Jason Mraz9. - Nellie McKay (skip past Nellie's cringey banter at the start)10. - First Aid Kit* I like this list better than my first one. Steel Panther is a worry and I hadn't even realised I had that Jason Mraz song (I heard it and went, oh, THIS song? I thought this was Third Eye Blind or someone), but the rest are good. Glad to get some Aussie hip-hop in there (Hilltoppa). Especial soft spot for 'O Verona'. I still remember the exact place I was when I first saw that opening sequence in the cinema.

Thanks so much - it's been a really fun week so far, checking out the forums and getting to chat with all of these HDTGM Forum All-Stars whose names I know so well from Corrections and Omissions! I always wondered if you guys kept tabs on who 'wins' C+O each episode, and totally expected to see running totals in people's signature when I first came here. But no, everyone's totally friendly and nice, and I've really enjoyed chipping in. This feels like a real throwback for me - I was a moderator and editor on the Four Word Film Review for many years (www.fwfr.com and the accompanying book) but since grad school I have drifted away from that site, so being back talking movies is so damn refreshing. And it's funny you talk about people being away because of school being back - I am a drama professor at a university up here so amidst all of the course planning, teaching, and committee meetings, it's been visiting this forum that's been a bright spot in what's always a crazy busy month! I'm collating my updated EDI'S JUKEBOX now: I'll update when I'm finished. Thanks again for the warm welcome! If you don't mind, I'll stick around.

    Episode 144 - Stealth

Okay, I'll do the too-enthusiastic-new-guy thing of jumping in first to EDI'S JUKEBOX. With the rule of 'the next ten songs' in mind, I set my entirely library to random and set to it. From years of collecting CDs and ripping to my iTunes, I have thousands of b-side tracks from random bands that I rarely listen to. But this time, I only skipped when I came across a song I couldn't bear to sit through. Here's my first ten that I listened to all the way through. Few can be considered favourites! 1. - Avicii feat. Dan Reynolds2. - Bran Van 30003. - Spiñal Tap4. - The Clash5. - The Beatles6. - Sarah Slean7. - Kate Miller-Heidke8. Paris - Kate Nash 9. - U210. - Kate Nash I'm pretty satisfied that there's a good mix of Australian (where I'm from) and Canadian (where I live now), with some random b-sides in there. I stuck with Vertigo because it made me laugh in memory of 'U Talkin' U2 2 Me?'. I will half-asterisk 'Do Wah Doo' as the song that had me dancing a little in my seat here in this Starbucks. I would have skipped the second Kate Nash song to avoid the double-up but I really like that song. Artists skipped include: Feist, The Wiggles, Macklemore, Serena Ryder, Sarah Slean, The Aston Shuffle, Slim Dusty, Crowded House, Bon Jovi, The Whitlams. I'm not sure if we also require commentary on our own picks, or defences. Looking forward to hearing what others have! *Edited to include links like others did! I will maybe try a follow-up tomorrow after I finish teaching.*

    The Nutcracker in 3D (2010)

Wow. What were Elle Fanning, Nathan Lane, and John Turturro doing in this thing? The trailer only betrays part of the mess: Nominated for a Razzie for 'Worst Eye-Gouging Misuse of 3D'. Nice pick!

    The Babysitters Club (1995)

That's a subplot lifted straight from the books: the whole subject was handled very strangely in the 80's. I remember reading the books as a kid and diabetes was a big deal to the characters, so they worked through the worries with how it will be perceived through one book, 'The Truth About Stacey'. Plot excerpt: Stacey's parents have been looking for a cure for her diabetes, dragging her to doctor from doctor (including a holistic doctor) which makes Stacey unhappy. Stacey talks to Dr. Johanssen who helps her schedule an appointment with a sensible doctor who convince her parents to lay off the search for a miracle. In the end, Mr. & Mrs. McGill agree to include their daughter in any decisions about her health care. (Source) A cure! Seeking a miracle! All this to say, this weirdly taboo-style approach to diabetes is right from the books, because she doesn't know how she'll be treated, and serves as inspiration for other kids going through the same thing. I can't believe I had all of that at the ready to answer that rhetorical question.

Oh, gross, you're totally right. The amount of times EDI said "I'm lear-ning" as though mimicking others' behaviour made it somehow not his fault. Maybe, just maybe, the filmmakers are hoping to shine a mirror back on our society in this commentary on how impressionable children will adopt the behaviours of those around them, and that EDI is just a product of our society. The natural evolution in the nature versus nurture debate. EDI is the combination of all the worst of all of us. Yeah, I bet that's what they were going for...

Yes! I thought that in a movie set in the distant fuuuuturistic time of 'twenty-sixteen' (did I say that right?) the hurried process of testing out this new plane was astonishing. Surely there would be hours in simulators and more than a self-guided 'read the manual' before they got to "I never thought this day would ever happen./Me either, sir" (my favourite ADR line from the take-off scene). And then when the trio head up to take their test flight, they are amazingly cavalier about punctuality and process, essentially running off to the test flight with half a piece of dry toast in their mouths as though they're late for a bus. The reaction to the plane's communicating with them shows very clearly that the three of them definitely spent the night before talking about foster mothers and dancing in shower flip-flops rather than actually doing their reading. Or, maybe the point is Sam Shepard has kept everything under wraps just to get EDI off the ground, against orders? I demand a training montage, dammit.

    Mystery Men (1999)

I loved this movie when it came out, and remember it being pretty solid in rewatches. In the 'Gods of Egypt' episode, when Geoffrey Rush's prosthetics were brought up (the reason he wears prosthetics in bad movies is to pretend it's not him), I was disappointed that there was no reference to his get-up as Casanova Frankenstein in this film. It looked like he was having fun as an Oscar winner with nothing to lose.

    Willy/Milly (1986)

Yes! I remember loving this movie as a 9 year old, but even then I knew the moment when 'Milly' reveals her new gender assignment to her best friend by pulling her pyjama pants open to show her 'his' new junk, was just wrong. I very clearly remember the spinning 'M' moment too. I shudder to think what the content is on a subject like this from this era. Not sure it would play so well today.

    Episode 144 - Stealth

Wasn't it the moment when Jessica Biel pointedly tells the boys that she too is going to 'pee pee' while on vacation in Thailand? A callback that seemed to try to justify the earlier one but so long after that it just made the first reference seem isolated. Very odd. For the sake of the power of the third reference (and the lucky prime number!) I would truly have loved if the Thai girl who was the object of Jamie Foxx's affection interrupted their travelogue date with an announcement (in Thai) that she had to pee pee. I wonder if Jamie would still find it 'nasty' then?

    Episode 144 - Stealth

Thank you! So glad to be here! (Let me know if I'm posting too much. I'll settle, I promise). I just went back and watched the 'homework' scene for the three, with specific interest in what the set dressers have done to personalise each of their 'dorm rooms' (as described on the ep). It's pretty hilarious seeing what each character is pigeonholed as: first, we see Josh Lucas, with a fairly spartan room but with a handful of indistinct photos of random football games up, emphasising that he's a man's man. Okay. Cool. Then we go see Jessica Biel: she sits on a yoga ball (or a Fitness Orb, as Dwight Schrute calls it) and is surrounded by flowers, photos of children, and hand-drawn pictures (including one of a plane that says 'my aunt'). Then, we go to Jamie Foxx's room, where the less said about his situation the better - he dances around in suspiciously Ray Charles-invoking sunglasses, surrounded by hundreds of photos of beautiful young women. So, we have the three archetypes: the man's man sportsman; the sensitive spinster aunt; the irrepressible ladykiller. THEN, when Josh goes to visit Jessica, she (for some reason) is the only one who has laundry hanging in her room (including a slip, which I guess she was wearing in the bar scene under her dress whites?), meaning that not only is the 'one of the boys' angel undermined by the excellent points raised above, but she cares about 'dumb things' like laundry and family. Which somehow makes her weak? I guess? Why do we have to see the scene about Josh Lucas's foster mother while Jessica Biel's gitch hangs artfully around the room? And then she very conspicuously makes reference to her 'c cup' for no real reason. I agree - when i first heard this I figured it was supposed to be along the lines of 'you just barely escaped a hostile environment in Russia where you thought you were toast, but now you're back on American soil, so you're safe', but it just comes across as a heavy-handed reminder to the audience about where we are. A 'welcome back to America' or 'welcome home' line might have done the same job.
