Musical Monday Week 36 Om Shanti Om
Cakebug Tranch replied to FisterRoboto's topic in How Did This Get Made?
Nice to meet you! I'm the board's resident Phantom expert given that I grew up in Australia reading the comics, so I'm more than happy to reassure you that the actual Phantom mythology is actually 100% awesome. The movie is a steaming pile and all true Phantom Phans disavow its existence. I didn't watch the MM movie this week so I'll be lurking but welcome to the boards! -
Musical Mondays Week 36 Preview (Fister Roboto’s 3rd Pick)

It's an important day when a grown man gets new insight into the psyche of his mother. Might be worth a read, to tie together some unexplained childhood memories. -

Hi, strangers! Okay, so I haven't heard the episode, watched the film, or read the whole thread, so I think I am excellently placed to make a broad and sweeping generalization here! Tom told me about the this Australian post so I thought I'd blunder in and shoot some things off for the first time in 6 months. As an Australian, I can very confidently assert that even though the Aussies you see on TV or meet in Europe backpacking around the place are hot messes of hedonism, it is a VERY conservative place at its core. Speaking as an Aussie who got married at 22 (really), traditional marriage values are, for the most part, adhered to. I don't want to completely draw a conclusion, but I can happily attest that yes, such a marriage is exactly in line with Australian culture. If you want to see REAL Australian conservatism, take a look into the immigration debate! (but really, don't do that) CakeBug out!

HDTGM Classics Vol 8 4/13 9PM EST Movie MAC & Me
Cakebug Tranch replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
I almost certainly can't join you, but as a democratically elected member of the HDTGM Senate (currently completing my life term as DemiChancellor), I cast my vote for 'Mac and Me'. I mean, 'Mac and Me' is unquestionably perhaps the worst thing ever created, but at least it's earnest and kind of fun. People were really trying super hard to make it, which is why its awfulness is so awesome. 'Sucker Punch' is cynical and rapey. Boo to that one. Boo, I say. -

Yes, very happy to support 'Scott Pilgrim' with the caveat that I should say that I haven't seen that movie in ten years. My memories are very strongly linked to the fact that the main star in that movie is the City of Toronto, which features heavily and often, and is full of secret sights that the tourists don't see. So, I'm totally biased about why I love 'Scott Pilgrim', but it's also nice to support you and bust Fister's chops a bit. Glad I've come back just in time to slip back into the rotation... -

First, sorry Fister for copying your MM pick six months ago. I'm deeply ashamed and I will spend the rest of the day repenting for my presumption. Second, Cam Bert's text conversation with his mom just added ten years to my life. I haven't laughed with glee like that in a while. And third, HI GUYS! I hesitate to say I'm back but I logged in to my iTunes this morning and realized I've missed 15 HDTGM movies (plus the minis and MMs!) - like, how did that happen? I stopped having time to watch the films so the episodes were getting less interesting, and without having seen the films or listening to the eps, I was logging in less, and then all of a sudden I'm on a six month podcast hiatus. I'd like to catch up and get back into things and start contributing again. Although looking at Fister's pick this week... uh... Anyway, I've missed you guys. My new job is awesome but I'm at it for 17-18 hours a day. But the up side of academia - three month break over summer! I'll be back way more as this semester winds down. Love you all! -
Musical Mondays Week 21 Guys and Dolls
Cakebug Tranch replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
As I've said, this week has been so nuts at work that I haven't had a chance to re-watch this film WHICH I PICKED. This means that I last saw this movie when I was in high school, 22 years ago. In my senior year, we did 'G+D' for our big school musical, and all the stars aligned that meant I got to play Nathan Detroit. That means I got to sing 'Guys and Dolls', 'Oldest Established', 'Sue Me' and even 'Adelaide' (written for Frank for the movie but inserted into the end of our show to give me more to do). To prep for that show we watched the movie non-stop. NON. STOP. All my memories of that film are fond, and fuzzy. I love 'Runyonland' and the pastels of the 'seedy' City. I can still recite the 'squirt cider in his ear' speech to this day. Reading all these reactions makes me not want to rewatch, though. I think sticking with my memory of being 16 years old and thinking that Frank and Marlon were awesome (I had no sense then that Marlon wasn't a good singer) might be the way to go. -

Wow! I totally didn't expect this to be a controversial choice - I thought I'd kind of let the team down by picking a 'classic' instead of something difficult. Delighted to see that there's room for debate on this, and although i doubt I'll chime in much (work is slamming me and I didn't get to rewatch MY OWN FILM) I'm loving this energy. I'll leave you with this little gem about "Titanic Thompson", the real-life gambler who Sky was based on: the "man who would bet on anything". http://guysanddollsbsu.weebly.com/runyonland.html -

YOU GUYS ARE IN FOR A TREAT! Frank and Marlon! Anxiously planning a craps game! Ruthlessly betting over the emotions of Christians! Commitment phobia! Technicolor gangsters! What's playin' at the Roxy? I'll tell ya what's playin' at the Roxy... I'm very excited. -

I'm glad people seem so down for Guys and Dolls! I have played Nathan Detroit and Benny Southstreet as a younger man, so I will brook no nonsense from anyone who suggests this isn't pure genius. So, forewarned! -

The image posted in Kate's quote! GOD DAMN IT MY EXCELLENT JOKE WAS RUINED. THANKS EARWOLF. Trying again... No, the movie I've picked that pairs two superstars for the behind the scenes look at a seedy industry is, of course... -

Hey guys, sorry about the delay - it's a crazy time and I completely forgot I was on deck until this morning However, I have been thinking long and hard about what I'd pick. I'd keep thinking of a MM pick and think And then I'd have second thoughts and think when I realized that not everyone would be into that one. So I kept thinking, and crossed a bunch of things off. And came to other picks and thought only to think about what it would do to Cameron H's fragile psyche: And then it made me think that it's silly to try to reinvent the wheel. Why not go back to something that we've all said in the past that we loved, that has wonderful songs, arresting visuals, and a real message that you can believe in? -

Sorry guys, I have been up since five and have driven from Toronto to Oswego: class starts in half an hour and I still have some prep to complete. So, it'll be a bit longer until I have something for you. But just to reassure you all, I certainly feel as though this morning I have Traversed the Solar System, or gone Through the Galaxy, so to speak... -

Here's one other one that I came up with (better post it now before Cameron scoops me again!) Paul mentioned that this movie was full of Bobos - Giant Michael Phelps, Only Oates, but was I the only one who saw someone more than a little familiar in our Dragon Sound drummer? -

I watched this movie last night, half distracted by work, and vacillated between bored and dumbfounded that everyone seems to love this thing. Then, this morning, I listened to the HDTGM episode, and all of a sudden I'm a convert. This might be the first time I've ever had the experience of hating a movie when I watched it only to later realise that I actually love it. Thanks, HDTGM!
