    Episode 153 - Escape from L.A.: LIVE!

The thing that I hated most was the promise of a much, much better movie just on the other side of the credits. Cuba and Brazil are invading Miami! Cuervo's buddies are massing in Anaheim getting ready to invade the mainland! I want to watch that movie way more than anything they gave us. And yes, I know the idea now is that once Snake flips the switch the invasion likely dies because the invaders have no electricity, but surely they brought flashlights! MOST OF ALL, THE US CAPITOL IS NOW IN LYNCHBURG BUT THE PRESIDENT STILL CALLS HIS HOUSE THE WHITE HOUSE. TAKE ME TO LYNCHBURG, MOVIE!

    Hell and Back (2015)

So, fiddling around on letterboxd I came across these horrific reviews for this apparently terrible movie: https://letterboxd.com/film/hell-back/ Nick Swardson and TJ Miller go to hell. Dick jokes ensue. And then I went to YouTube to find the trailer for this thing, which I watched, here. And then, on autoplay, the new YouTube clip queued up, which was... the entire movie. What? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1N23em6IZLQ

I just joined letterboxd too. I have no idea what's going on but I'm just blindly clicking on things I've seen and it seems to be going well. My username is shaksper (for some reason I didn't use that when i started posting here) so feel free to add me. I've added Jammerlea but have no way of finding anyone else since I don't know your usernames and am too busy blindly clicking to look them up!

    Episode 153 - Escape from L.A.: LIVE!

Hey that's a thing. I was thinking about the hologram projector that they go out of their way to say can only be used once (sure, okay) because of its battery life and whatnot. But it's projecting an image over a long distance, into the exact middle of this clearing where Snake is pretending to recover from the helicopter crash. But he's then ringed with guys with guns, so where is the beam of light projecting? Not even a flicker (I guess I'm thinking 'Star Wars' holograms). What if someone walks between the beam and the target? Surely that would give the game away? Maybe it's no beam at all, but some kind of astral projection, okay, sure. But - and this happens at the beginning when the military bozos are talking to Snake too - the holograms are interacting with the real humans as though they're right in front of them. And can hear every word that's said to them. If Snake's a half mile away at the end, he shouldn't be able to quietly converse with the people in the clearing. And he looks from person to person, even though he has no visual point of reference. What I want is a reverse angle version of that stand-off scene that features Snake by himself in a wooded area performing this scene all by himself as though he's really over in the other place. That's a scene we're entitled to, damn it.

Musical Mondays Off-Week 2 (Tomspanks' Choice)

Not me. I first learned about Baba O'Reilly because it was on an episode of House. I shit you not. Growing up in Australia meant if it wasn't by AC/DC, it wasn't on the radio.

I will make a real effort to watch this time, I promise! The stage show was on at a theatre Festival I work at years ago but I never got around to seeing it. Glad to have the excuse!

Am I the only one who thought of this moment when Snake looked at the camera?

    Episode 153 - Escape from L.A.: LIVE!

Ooh this is spooky. I just finally finished the ep and read all nine pages of posts, and I get here, and Cameron H is posting the same thing at the same time. Kismet! I don't have much to say about this movie at all: I'm going to leave the C+Os to the Carpenter superfans. Five things: 1) I turned to my wife at the end and said, "Well, it was way better than 'Dreamcatcher'". Damned with faint praise, but I enjoyed the silliness of it. Laughed out loud at the tsunami surfing and the hang gliders' refusal to obey the laws of physics. 2) Am I the only one who thought that the murder basketball game, if you removed the murder at the end part, looked super fun? I'd play that. 3) My real last name is Malone, so I was a little miffed with Pam Grier for choosing a new name. And I thought about changing my username to Carjack Malone, but my current one just rolls off the tongue so nicely... 4) Why didn't Snake drive his submarine away, never to be seen again? What possible purpose did the submarine have, especially since it just falls in the water again? Why not airdrop him in there? 5) Peter Fonda was embarrassing. I felt very sad watching him in that role.

Watching tonight! And haven't made Cameron's mistake of watching the first one yet. Ack I HATE having a new HDTGM ep sitting in my queue, unable to be heard because I haven't got to the film yet...

That means you're not eating it fast enough...! Plus, it's very very very important that you're either a) famished; b ) fall-down drunk; or preferably, c) both. Soggy fries are like manna from heaven at 3am. Pulled pork pierogy or bacon double cheeseburger poutine makes the risk of fry sogginess moot: http://smokespoutinerie.com/menu/#pork

    Episode 152.5 - Minisode 152.5

I had a similar experience. In the third year of my PhD I had to write a comprehensive exam which I was given four months to study for - I was given a reading list of 150 plays from Ancient Greek to Contemporary, and had to prepare to write a four-hour exam, three essays, incorporating at least nine plays, no crossover, hitting at least nine eras, etc, etc. It was the hardest I've ever worked on something. Anyway, on the morning of the exam, I'm shitting bricks, knowing that if I failed the exam I might get kicked out of school, and hearing horror stories of all the people who melted down mid exam. I sat down in the exam room and realised I'd forgotten all my pens. So I ran down to the campus bookstore in the basement of the building, bought three new pens, and just as I put my foot on the bottom step to come back up, THIS came on: Bill Conti lifted me up the stairs, and I sailed into the room, completely confident once more. And I SMASHED the exam. I'll always thank 'Gotta Fly Now' for that moment.

Aw, I spent the most Canadian day ever, beginning with breakfast topped with the contents from a Bag of Milk, ice skating with my kids at the old Maple Leaf Gardens and then eating lunch (WHICH INCLUDED PEAMEAL BACON CAMERON!) at Chez Cora (the best thing Quebec ever gave us), and come home to this niceness. We also took the kids to Moana, which is the anti-Canadian, but let that pass. I will begin taking Canadian food orders post haste, although I'm not the only Canuck on the boards, of course. Anyone had Smoke's Poutine?
