  1. Also, I just want to go on record as stating, I didn't really like this movie either - although I didn't exactly loathe it. I'm more defending it in a Devil's Advocate role for the sake of conversation. I do not endorse anything in this movie. Plus, I feel some responsibility for thrusting this upon all of you.

So, ultimately, I think it was a well made movie. There were some gorgeous shots and whatnot, but ultimately, my 21st Century brain couldn't really cope with the level of BS they were shoveling.

I couldn't quite figure out what they achieved by all of their on-location filming in Paris - they didn't really make the most of the locations in the Tulieries Gardens and the Luxembourg Gardens that didn't look vaguely like green-screen. A lot of the stuff that was shot on location was so often so tightly framed that the impact was lost. There were few moments where the majesty of Paris was immaterial, because they were clearly in a studio (like where Gaston rides his buggy right underneath the Eiffel Tower!!), so the much-feted on-location shots were wasted.

  2. A better title for this movie would be How Gaston Got His Groove Back. This is really his story and he even gets to sing more songs than Gigi. While things happen to Gigi, Gaston gets to make all the important decisions. I guess that's expected though, since you know, Gigi is a CHILD.

Absolutely agreed. I just don't get why this movie digs itself such a giant hole right off the bat: start out with the pedophile's anthem and then smash straight into our 'hero' brattily saying everything is a 'bore', as though we're supposed to be cheering for his recovery and redemption. Seriously, that 'bore' song made me say FUCK YOU to Gaston for the rest of the movie.

AND SERIOUSLY GUYS WHAT IS WITH THAT MOMENT WHERE EVERYONE CONGRATULATES GASTON ON GETTING EVA GABOR TO ATTEMPT SUICIDE

  3. Cake-butt brought it up last night, but would anyone else be interested in setting up viewings for the current HDTGM movies? Considering the movies we've been watching lately, it might make for a more enjoyable experience...

Season of the Witch was horrible, but I had a great time watching with you guys last night...especially reading those reviews afterward.

Yeah, I might actually be motivated to watch the Garbage Pail Kids Movie if I knew we were group watching on Thursday night or something.

  4. I remember the first M-rated movie I saw was when I was 8 or 9, when Crocodile Dundee came out. Now, growing up in Australia, that movie was the national birthright: I'm pretty sure there are still pictures of Paul Hogan on the front of our passports. So, even though my parents were always very strict about not seeing M-rated movies, the national jingoism that Croc Dundee elicited made all arguments moot, and I'm pretty sure that I (along with every other man, woman and child) saw that thing at least twice in the cinema.

  5.

No, no. I see what happened here. You watched Gigli. We're watching Gigi - the movie about child prostitution...

    Oh! OH! Oh oh oh!

    That explains so much.

I kept waiting for the singing, and then I thought that Christopher Walken or Al Pacino might do a little soft-shoe but instead Al just shot that guy in the face. Justin Bartha could have sung a whole number about The Baywatch. Missed opportunity.

Time to watch the one about... child... prostitution...?

  6. Hey look, I watched Gigi today and I'm a bit confused. I mean, for a Musical Monday pick it seemed a bit out of place. I mean, there just wasn't much music to speak of. And the Ben Affleck/Jennifer Lopez chemistry was pretty unremarkable. No wonder this killed Martin Brest's career.

I can definitely see why this was considered one of the worst movies ever, but still puzzled about the pick.

  8. Hey, here's something I meant to do at the end of the last thread: not sure if anyone's interested in doing this, or if it will hurt people's feelings (probably not....)...

Since we're now into round 2 of MM, I thought we might like to rank, based on our own personal enjoyment, all of the MM films in the first round.

    Here's the chronological list.

    Hedwig and the Angry Inch

    Hairspray

    Tommy

    Beauty and the Beast

    Across the Universe

    Jesus Christ Superstar

    Cabaret!

    Rent

    Pete's Dragon

    High School Musical

    Repo! The Genetic Opera

    An American Tail

    That Thing You Do!

    The Phantom of the Paradise

    The Fantasticks

    Krush Groove

Aside from the blanket truth that Across the Universe is everyone's number 1, how do you rank them? (you can obviously exclude ones you didn't get to see).

  9. Yes, I was puzzled by the finginaTM as well - when Silver hits on the guy in the bar she says something along the lines of "I'm going to get a pussy" (sic) - so she doesn't consider the hole in her leg a vagina. But when the creepy club owner guy puts his hand in there she seems to show pleasure (maybe just for his edification?), and she does invite Bobo Peter Dinklage to put his dick in there, doesn't she? In all of these cases, it seems like that is definitely a mermaid vagina, but Silver seems fixated on getting a human vagina. Is this because Bobo Peter Dinklage is only attracted to humans?

AND ALSO. If she gets her tail cut off and gets a human vagina, to pretend she's not an animal, she still grows those nasty mermaid teeth and communicates by sonar. She's still totally an animal, dude.

  10. I legit thought my subtitles were fucked up and her character's name was supposed to be Kinga this whole time. I kept wondering why no one was referring to her as Krysia and didn't even bother looking it up lmao.

I caught zero names over the course of the movie except for Golden and Silver (which I mix up every time), so I'm just taking everyone's word for it when they use names. In my head, their names are blonde dude, singer lady, drum guy, club owner, and surprise wife.

  11. Honestly, I vote we ignore which episodes are or are not behind the paywall and just try to watch all the movies. Maybe for now we can coordinate with episodes but I don't want us to all be limited by that.

(I still haven't even re-listened to the Burlesque episode yet)

Yeah, I listened to the Burlesque episode (mostly because it was #1 and I was interested in going back) but I quickly got tired of rehashing an episode I'd already heard. In future I'm not going to revisit the episode even if it's in front of the paywall. For me it's more about the movie than the podcast episode.

We could always watch The Phantom and I can point out all of the adaptive inaccuracies in the lore based on my long tenure as a card-carrying teenage member of the Phantom fan club (and owner of a crate of 400 Phantom comics in my parents' shed)...

  12. It might be easier to just go in the order of the episodes (except for special screenings like Sleepaway Camp in October).

Easier, yeah, but going through those early ones there's not many that are fun-bad like Burlesque was. I'd hate for this to be a chore if we're slogging through horrible stuff! I'll stop being difficult now. Whatever you guys want to do.

  13. Here's my list of the first 13 films from the canon that I haven't seen, just to start us off.

    Season of the Witch

    Last Airbender

    Drive Angry

    Backup Plan

    Skyline

    Wicker Man

    I Know Who Killed Me

    Leprechaun in the Hood

    Breaking Dawn

    Trespass

    88 Minutes

    Abduction

    Tiptoes

Or, should we go through and nominate a couple that we're actually looking forward to watching, rather than just slogging through stuff we know is going to suck? Were that the case, I might add

    No Holds Barred

    Staying Alive

    Gymkata

    Road House (I know!)

    Lake Placid

    Deep Blue Sea

    Hercules in NY

I mean, we could run it like Musical Mondays, and nominate someone to pick for everyone, or maybe even pick three options that we vote on?
