Musical Mondays Week 11 Repo! the Genetic Opera
EvRobert replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
Oh I wasn't saying that you were saying it was ripped off LOL I have just had this argument for so long. It's a theme that has gone back even before the late 90s/early 00's. I know of a book from the mid 90s that also explored this notion and I'm sure it goes back even further. It's not a troupe that has been well mined, but it does have some basis in science fiction. I think there is room in the speculative fiction world for all sorts of organ repossession stories, i just wish this one was better.- 208 replies

Musical Mondays Week 11 Repo! the Genetic Opera
EvRobert replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
Also, just for fun, I looked up some ages... There is only a 12 year age difference between Paul Sorvino and Bill Moseley. Now I don't discount that a twelve year old Paul Sorvino could have sired a son, it just seems...when it's supposed to be shocking that a 13 year old had surgery and started turning tricks, it just doesn't quite work. Ogre is a 23 year age difference, and Paris Hilton is a 42 year old age difference. So the MUCH older brothers are going to willingly and happily turn over their billion dollar empire to their MUCH younger baby sister?- 208 replies

Musical Mondays Week 11 Repo! the Genetic Opera
EvRobert replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
Ugh that whole "controversy" OMG different people had a similar ideas! I hate how some of the fans (my aforementioned friends/roommates) would make this argument and I would just roll my eyes. And I really hated the response Terrance Zdunich's response on his website. It has this whole...."well we know it's possible but ours is SO much better." Listen, Repo Men SUCKED, but Jude Law and Forrest Whitiker are a lot better at making me suspend my disbelief then a drunk Paul Sorvino, Paris Hilton and an overacting Anthony Steward Head are.- 208 replies

Musical Mondays Week 11 Repo! the Genetic Opera
EvRobert replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
I also do kind of wonder what this would be like with actual musical theater people. I want to imagine what this show would be like with some dramaturgy work. There is a genesis of a nugget of an idea here that I want them to explore, but there's some tonal and story shifts that I think hurt it, but could be overlooked (for example, in GOTG2 there is a character called "Taserface", I don't question why in a galaxy far, far away they know what a "taser" is...or a douchebag or the like. I just accept it because the actors are good and just roll with it.) IF the performance was good. But since they decided they wanted to make this operatic and sing as much as they can, and they didn't get people who can sing, it makes all the flaws that much clearer and sharper.- 208 replies

Musical Mondays Week 11 Repo! the Genetic Opera
EvRobert replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
I have so much SO MUCH to talk about this movie... A) As I mentioned in the announcement thread, I have a very tenuous relationship with this show but I didn't go into a lot of details. I have some friends that absolutely love this movie (they also love Otep and I can't stand her either, but at least she has talent). They love this movie to cult-like levels. Okay, you know that scene at the "Genetic Opera" (oh that's so clever! We're going to call it the genetic opera, even though they say they can't make you sing like Mag [which is true, god bless Sarah Brightman] but they can give you super-cool Geordi LeForge eyes--even though no one else's body parts have some super tech ability.) but the openingnumber where the nurses come marching in and everyone is testifying? That's my friends. They fucking worship this show. AND I DON'T GET IT! It's like Steampunk and mid 2000s Emo/Goth culture threw up and had a baby. The goth kids that South Park makes fun of? This is their wet dream. YOU HAVE SARAH BRIGHTMAN AND GIVE HER ONE SONG! YOU HAVE JOAN JETT AND SHE _JUST_ PLAYS GUITAR! YOU HAVE PAUL SORVINO, who can fucking act, AND HE'S TRYING TO SING (bless his heart). Bill Mosley and the other brother have no point. LIke okay they are arguing the whole time about who is going to take over Geneco and then the post-credit FOR NO GODDAMN REASON THEY ARE OKAY WITH PARIS HILTON TAKING OVER! Oh and the face wearing brother wears her face? But no reason is given for this change of heart. Because she performed and her face fell off? The whole Zydate Anatomy song says that Paris Hilton is addicted to Zydate and to surgery, but if her family runs the company, why does she need to go to the Gravedigger for the drug? Why does she get it there and then never go into surgery? And for someone addicted to the surgery, other then the ruined face scene and the face falling off scene, she never shows signs of having crazy surgery. As much as i hated Bill Mosley's role, I loved him. He seemed to be one of the few that got what this was. Why was Giles sometimes portrayed as being an amoral, I have no problems repossessing these organs and other times so conflicted. It made no goram sense. Alexa Vega actually didn't bother me, except for her big I Am 17 number. I hated the comic book intros to the songs, BECAUSE THE SONGS TELL US EVERYTHING THE COMIC BOOK PANELS TOLD US! They literally served NO POINT. It got to the point that as soon as I saw the comic book stuff I was joking about how the next song would tell us everything. The gravedigger role, pointless. But hey the co-writer got to look "sexy and dark and brooding or whatever." Sorry for the long rant...I hated this movie, but it was the PERFECT HDTGM movie. Great pick EllenMC, even though it made me sick. It gave me so much to rant about and I will probably keep ranting about.- 208 replies

I watched HSM on Saturday and I was anxious to talk about it. I think I'm going to have to watch this on Thursday as it's my day off this week. And thanks! -
Musical Mondays Off-Week 10 (Ellenmc's Pick)
EvRobert replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
I'm putting this off. I am blaming the fact that i found out a short play of mine was accepted for a production at the Samuel French book shop in Hollywood and I was scrambling to find an actor for it. Truth is, I am just procrastinating watching this. -
Musical Mondays Week 10 High School Musical 1 & 2...maybe 3
EvRobert replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
Correction: Tisdale was a regular on Suite Life of Zack and Cody. IIRC (I have a sister that is 20 years younger then me, I do remember watching this show with her some and I vaguely remember this episdoe), it was a promotion thing for HSM2. So not "guest starring Sharpey" Starring Sharpey -

FUCK! I'll say that I have NOT seen this, but I lived with some roommates who were OBSESSED with this g'd movie, to the point that I just hate it by default. Also, I have very strong feelings about the the fans who claimed that the movie (albeit BAD movie) "Repo Men" ripped Repo off. That also left a really bad taste in my mouth. It's like there is a fucking cult around this movie. -

Also, ya'll Kansas is the worst. We were like the beta test run for Trumpakistain policies. I too wondered about the why New Meixo thing and why not Utah. Maybe the writer was from Albuquerque and decided to write it in. True story, the town I grew up in was randomly mentioned in an episode of Just Shoot Me (Wendi Malick's character was supposed to be from here) and an episode of My Nmae Is Earl. If this were a historical town or even a semi major one in Kansas I'd be like "okay" but its not. Come to find out a writer who worked on both shows was from this little town of 5000 people and just wrote it in. I do things like that too. In ones of my plays I needed the names of two doctors, so I just wrote the names of my childhood doctors. -

There is a lot in the past couple of hours! But i can answer this, at least in my school our gym teacher did have an office in the locker room. However it was at the door to the locker room and not at the ass end. Also, this is my first real MM thread and it broke records. Whoop there it is -

EvRobert replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
I hate Kansas that much Yeah, that part sucked, but I at that point I realized I was pretty much the most expirenced actor in the company so I did me and worked with my co-actors. I pretty much did the whole Persian Goodbye/Oklahoma Hello on my own. Ah, community theater Good point, I do think Kelsi is the MD in actions, I just don't know if Darbus would credit her or credit her correctly. This DRAMA TEACHER mispronounces "musical" for crying out loud. She is building sets with kids from detention before casting has even started. What if the person she casts is shorter then that balcony set piece or the tree and can't see out of it? She reminds me of a High School director I saw once who referred to blocking as "choreography" and the sets as "props". -

EvRobert replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
I wish! I love that show so much. I was just basing it off the first film, and she just seemed to be there, but I suppose yeah she probably is the MD, but Darbus seems the kind of director who doesn't care about titles and does what she wants. ETA: I did OKLAHOMA! with a director who was also our MD. It was a great show, but so weird to not be working with a dedicated MD. He kind of gave us free reign on some of the stage directing. I was playing Ali Hakim and asked "do you want me entering here or there" and he told me "wherever". Also it's possible that Darbus wouldn't credit Kelsi as the MD. Same production of Oklahoma! I did all the fight choreography and some sound design and didn't get credited. (of course this same company misspelled either Rodgers or Hammerstein's name on the program.) -

EvRobert replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
IF Kelsi is the MD she would have some input, when I was co-directing Legally Blonde, we had two directors (I was credited as co-director and gave input on the acting process, but viewed myself as more technical director, particularly when we got out of the rehearsal rooms and on the stage, using lights, props, etc) and a musical director. When it came to casting, the three of us sat at Applebees, ate half price appetizers and drank and went over everyone who auditioned, giving our suggestions. I argued pretty strong for one particular actress for Elle but was outvoted. I didn't get the impression Kelsi was the MD, but just the "writer" and as a playwright, I can tell you, some directors (and Darbus--or D'Arts in Argentina!--seems like one of these) are like "fuck the writer, I have MY vision". So, I could see Darbus just steamrolling poor Kelsi. -
Episode 161 - The Fate of the Furious

Here is my argument for 1,2, 4 being a trilogy. I'm going to tag this as a spoiler because I know taylor hasn't seen it yet... -
Episode 161 - The Fate of the Furious
EvRobert replied to JulyDiaz's topic in How Did This Get Made?
Yeah I get that, I just found it weird that the villain responsible for everything in 6 and 7 is how you kickstart your new trilogy. It felt more like a closer to me. To me, other then introducing Hobbs, 5 doesn't connect with the others. It's in Brazil, it's a heist movie. It's more standalone, to me. -
Episode 161 - The Fate of the Furious
EvRobert replied to JulyDiaz's topic in How Did This Get Made?
I was kind of waiting for that too. Also wasn't there some speculation that Hobbs was gay or something? Maybe I dreamed it, who knows. But it's not out of the realm of possibility that the Rock would play gay, he's done it before (see F. Gary Gray's BE COOL-he's the ONLY good thing about that movie--possible stay tuned?). And as I mentioned in the recommended thread, I think that's why the comedy between the Rock and Statham works, because those two know not to take themselves so seriously (and have better comic timing then Disel does). As for future cast members; Sean Bean, Pierce Brosnon, Robbie Coltrane. What I'd really like though is for them to pull out someone like Gene Hackman or Jack Nicholson out. I'd love to see some more strong women, like gimme Lena Headly or Sigourney Weaver -
Episode 161 - The Fate of the Furious
EvRobert replied to JulyDiaz's topic in How Did This Get Made?
I hadn't heard that this was the start of a final trilogy because it feels like the end of a trilogy with the exception of Cypher/Cipher getting away. She is the reason everything has happened to them since Fast 6 or rather she is the puppet master behind everything since Fast 6. This is the culmination. I feel that the Fast movies are broken into trilogies like so: 1, 2, 4 6, 7, 8 with 3 and 5 serving as standalones basically. -

Having only seen HSM1, I just assumed Gabriela's mom worked for like a company that was moving her up the food chain so to speak and each move up the corporate ladder required a move. Therefore she could promise not to transfer again by just denying the next promotion offered (although that might end up getting her stuck in Albuquerque. So Gabriela is being selfish by denying her mom the chance to be promoted simply so she can finish high school in the same school Her mom seemed very well put together). Maybe Troy's family bought a house they couldn't really afford and due to the housing crash, that's why Troy had to get a scholarship? I can't explain the ski lodge stuff. The teen party seems to exist only in a Disney world. -

twenty some odd years ago when I was in HS it was very simple 4 classes in the fall/winter, 4 classes in the Winter/spring you had to take (math, science, English, "social studies") then we had 3 electives. Sometimes the electives only went 9 weeks (like driver's ed) and sometimes they went 18. the only "free" period I can remember is Jr and Senior year, we could take college classes or you could skip last period and go to work. -

I thinknhe workshopped and rewrote IN THE HEIGHTS over about 5 years. His original main character doesnt even appear in the final version. I remeber seeing him perform the original Alexander Hamilton number at the White House Poetry slam. 4 or 5 years later Hamilton finally opened. But Lin is a genius
