Big Girls Don't Cry... They Get Even (1992)
Veronica_Sawyer replied to Ofcoursemyhorse's topic in Bad Movie Recommendations
I remember loving this movie mostly the cast. I loved that Jenny Lewis was in it (The Wizard, Troop Beverly Hills, and Rilo Kiley). The mom is Margaret Whitton (aka Auntie Vera from the Secret of My Success), then we have the late Adreinne Shelly (Waitress), a very young Ben Savage (The Wizard and Boy Meets World) and David Strathairn (Eight Men Out, Sneakers and Good Night and Good Luck). For my pre-teen self I thought this movie was super funny. I found it on YouTube not too long ago. Really not that great. It's actually really sad. -

Okay, I'm not gonna lie...I have been wondered what the title of this movie was forever. It also went by the name Something Special. I remember watching it on cable as a kid forever could not remember what it was. -

I'm going to pop in here because this is one of those movies I should not have watched as a kid but did. It was on cable all of the time (this and Once Bitten) Side note besides William Zabka from the Karate Kid, it also had several other 80's B actors; Clayton Rohner and Deborah Goodrich - who were both in April Fool's Day (1986) a movie that should also be covered here. When I got a bit older I realized it was basically a modern take on Twelth Night And finally our heroine Joyce Hester was in the music video for Dream About You which is one of the theme songs from Streets of Fire a movie covered by HDTGM. -
Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982)

Because it's fun-bad. Like The Stuff (another HDTGM suggestion that I'm shocked has not been done). -
I think starting the thread should be the deciding factor as it is more elusive.

For some reason I loved this movie when I was a kid. Watched it as an adult and honestly I must have been really naive because this movie is just creepy and gross. I have never seen the appeal of Gerard Depardieu. Not even in Greencard when I'm supposed to find him charming. Just no. The whole premise of this movie is basically a running gag that the French are perverts (how many times do they throw out that it's so french). Katherine plays the epitome of an entitled, privileged brat. So much so that to make herself seem more interesting to a boy she says her mom was a drug addicted prostitute and that her father is her pimp. Think about that for a second. I second the grossness of the director who thought that sexualizing a fourteen year old girl is hilarious or having Depardieu singing 'Thank Heaven for Little Girls' while the onlookers leave in disgust is a super clever joke. Yep...pedo jokes always a crowd favorite. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pqgeKGoJjig

OH AND I totally forgot that Angelina Jole's creepy brother James Haven is in this. Bonus points for that.

Even if this movie is never covered on HDTGM if you're interested it's currently streaming on hulu. That being said, I know this is a piece of crap movie. I watched it a week or so ago because I binge horror movies during October and hadn't seen this since it first came out. A couple of things jumped out at me. Samaire Armstron's character is introduced at a funeral, at which she is photographing the bereaved including our "hero" Hutch. She says that she was really friends with the girl who died (which was Loomis' roommates girlfriend). So basically you're at the funeral of an acquaintance and feel it's totally appropriate to invade the personal space of the grieving because it's cute and quirky. Then Hutch is so taken with this really weird girl that he invites her to hang and play this weird game of Loomis' (oh and she's not even a gamer). She later reveals that she's homeless. So to summarize, homeless acquaintance attends funeral and proceeds to get her kicks by taking pictures of crying individuals and to pick up men. Cool. Oh and yeah Sophia Bush is flawless regardless of what she does so October rules.

I think you nailed it. I saw it with a friend and our reactions when it was over was she legit hated it. However she basically said "what the hell did I just watch? There's two hours of my life I'll never get back." While on my end I got a lot of the story but had a hard time articulating it. I knew I didn't hate it but felt like I needed some time to digest it. The more time that passes the more fond of it I am. I do think it's a bit pretentious. I still have some questions...and I haven't really met enough people who saw it to ask. I think the hatred comes from a few different places. The first is that some people literally didn't understand it. That's not to say those people are dumb but some people do not pick up on symbolism and metaphors. The second is they did get the point and they were offended or they felt that the director was trying to offend them by being "edgy". The final reason I see is that people got it and they feel that the director was trying too hard and that it was absurd and overproduced fluff. But that's just my two cents.

Yes. Yes it is.

Also, to you I love the Real Genius pic. It's one of my all-time favorite and most watched movies.

This is a terrible movie for sure. I do like it though. It's in that sweet spot of the 90's when I was the EXACT demographic it was made for. Brendan Frasier I think is super charming, Sissy Spacek is hilarious, Christopher Walken is Christopher Walken and we even get 90's Dave Foley. I think Alicia Silverstone is the weakest of the cast, and even then she's sort of adorable.

I love this movie and I'm not even ashamed. I should be, but I'm not.
