    Thoughts on the Earwolf Challenge

Just wait for season 2, when the Molecular Cave Biologycast is competing.
  2. What a fantastic finale. I really loved listening to you guys dissect the process and recap the competition. I think the real winner here is Earwolf Challenge, a show more compelling than any of the contestants (no offense meant to them!). . I found the results surprising, during the discussion it felt like all signs were pointing to LDDC. I was slightly leaning towards TL before this episode, but as you guys chatted about LDDC's strength, I was agreeing: "yes, they ARE funnier... yes, they ARE better at mining topics for comedy". I guess it boiled down to TL having more of a "hook". . Which is fine. I'm already a subscriber to TL, and although I don't have as much time for podcasts as I used to, I'll probably start subscribing to LDDC too. But what I'm really looking forward to is more EWC. . Congrats to Elizabeth and Andy, and good show to Tommy and Karl!

  4. I'd be fine with either of these podcasts winning. It seems to me they have pretty similar strengths and weaknesses. If I had to choose I'd probably give the edge to TL which has more of a hook with the married couple thing. It's probably very unfair (and typically narrow-minded American) of me, but I can't help thinking of LDDC as "TOFOP's baby brother". On the other hand, LDDC would bring a nice international flavor to the Earwolf lineup, whereas there seems to be some crossover between TL's guests and the usual gang of Earwolf guests. . As far as judging just by this week's submissions, it's pretty close. My attention started to wander slightly more during LDDC, but maybe that's only because I was busier when I listened to it. . I suppose it's a little disappointing that the competition came down to two gabfests, but the truth is Earwolf doesn't have a show that's just straight up, free form chat without a theme or a gimmick. While I would have liked to see something more conceptual in the running, either one of these will be a good addition to the lineup. . Sorry this post wasn't more condescending and confrontational.

  6. To Matt, Scott, Jeff and all the Earwolf staff: please don't take these negative comments to heart. It may seem like you're getting hammered, but if you look at the names, you'll see it's the same 3 or 4 disgruntled kooks posting over and over again. I guarantee that most of your listeners are loving the show. Satisfied customers don't often take the time to sing your praises, they just keep enjoying the product. But I want to sing your praises. The Earwolf Challenge is a great idea, and you're doing a terrific job. I do think the judging parameters could use some fine-tuning, but it's only the first season and I know things will be even better in the second. And I dearly, dearly hope there is a second season. I subscribe to a lot of podcasts, but every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday the very first one I listen to is Earwolf Challenge. . To all the competing podcasters: you're great, too. I may not have enjoyed all the content of each podcast, but I admire how you put yourselves out there for criticism. It's a lot harder to do than sitting in front of a keyboard, childishly pointing out what you perceive as flaws in the hard work that others do. . And lastly, to those of you leaving pissy reviews for Walking the Room on iTunes: go fuck yourselves. WTR is a hilarious podcast, my favorite after CBB. Admittedly, it's not a podcast you can just jump right into, it helps to know all the backstory (and especially the terminology). But for you to listen to pieces of one episode and then run to iTunes to vote 1 star makes you a douchebag.

  8. Left-Handed Radio - I've been iffy about whether or not I'd enjoy a sketch-based podcast, but I must admit these guys are starting to win me over. Plus they're dealing with a higher degree of difficulty than anyone else remaining. I thought the middle sketch was pretty weak, but the first had a good premise and the third was very strong. . Bob & Dan - They seem like good guys, I just don't get why I should listen to them. They're two guys chatting, with fair but unremarkable comic chops. . Little Dum Dum - See Bob & Dan, but with a lot more charm. Yes, a lot of the charm comes from the accents, but I think these two play off each other so well. I wouldn't mind them winning. Having said that, I think my "two Aussie comics shooting the shit" quota might be already filled by TOFOP. . Totally Laime - My favorite at the beginning, but they do seem like they're losing steam. Elizabeth and Andy are much fun to listen to, but the clip they selected for this challenge was kind of meh. I'm worried this might be the end of the road for them. On the other hand, they probably "need" to win this challenge less than anyone else, since they're already pulling pretty big guests, and have gained a lot of new fans from this. . F+ - Not funny at all to me, and really just unpleasant to listen to. I'm trying to think of something nice to say... I guess the fact that they have fans means they're doing something right and appealing to someone.

    Episode 6.3 — Sketches: Day 3

Next challenge: each podcast has to read Dirk's insane posts out loud. "Boing" sound effects optional. . Comedy podcasts: SERIOUS BUSINESS

    Episode 6.2 — Sketches: Day 2

Well, this is the first week I didn't totally hate what F+ is doing. It'd be nice if all their work had this level of professionalism. But in the end it still boils down to "making fun of the internet" which is a concept I feel is played out and not that compelling or amusing. . It pained me to hear Totally Laime stumble so hard... so maybe they're not the best "performers" in the challenge, but they're among the best personalities so I'm hoping this challenge doesn't knock them out. Fingers crossed. Still, based on this challenge alone they're the only ones who didn't at least do a decent job.
