Episode 1 — Freelancer or Entrepreneur?
jeffullrich replied to admin's topic in Seth Godin's Startup School
I'm so happy to have been able to work with Seth in bringing this valuable information to Earwolf (and non-Earwolf) listeners. I've been reading his books and blogs for 10 years and he has been THE main influence in how I've built Earwolf. I was able to attend a workshop of his in December that changed the way I think about my business and this new series continues that education for me. A lot of our listeners are freelancers, entrepreneurs and small business owners, so I know this series will be useful for those looking to build their business or start one. For freelancers, it will help you figure out if you should continue what you are doing or start something bigger. I'm excited to hear your thoughts, so please don't be shy. We're trying something different here with a non-entertainment show, but we're keeping with our values of producing high quality content with high quality people. It doesn't get much better than Seth Godin when it comes to business. I hope you enjoy. -
Thanks for writing Jeff. I don't think Dave meant that they were the devil's work, just that there should be moderation, which seems to be what you are saying. I played video games too growing up, but spent more time with board games and puzzles, which I think are also important. Boy, I sure am old.

Thanks for the kind words Bacon and thanks for listening!

Hi Mike, Thanks for your thoughtful response. I agree, my comments are HEAVILY influenced by my own situation and life choices that don't fit as well with other people's professional goals. You raise plenty of great points that would be fun to debate over coffee. The problem is that it's hard to cover all the variations of topics like this in a short podcast. So what you heard was me making a strong statement from an admittedly narrow perspective. However, just because you got so much value from your education doesn't mean that everyone will. I believe I said on the show, it's really about the kind of person you are. And I'll make another sweeping generalization, it just seems like a lot of 18 year olds aren't as ready to take advantage of what an education has to offer as much as you were. I'm not great at debating over a forum, not a lot of experience with it. But I agree with many of your points, I just think there are lots of shades of gray and case by case variations here. And that makes it a pretty interesting and fascinating topic. If you live in LA, let's get coffee!

I'd like to share my very biased thoughts on this. We're very excited to be working with Har Mar. He's super talented, much loved and has a fascinating life and friends who want to talk about a variety of things. I think that's exciting. He's new to this and will find his path and structure soon, but even as a newbie he's done a great job already. And his theme song is my favorite of all our shows! His passion and enthusiasm for the show are off the charts. That is ultimately what will make his show great. There is only one Har Mar. As far as Earwolf doing different things, and some people not liking that, I don't think that's an issue. The download numbers have been strong and the overall response we've gotten has been good. But I think when you take what we've done in the past, that has such a distinctive style, new things can take a while to feel "right". That's to be expected. It is even a shock to my system. But we're working hard with the new artists to develop shows that fit the Earwolf feel - produced and structured entertainment. We're getting there. I think Shortwave is already there. As long as we keep with our overall vision of smart and edgy content for bright, forward thinking people, hosted by great talent, we should be good. Not all of the comedy fans are going to listen to the new stuff, but there will also be new people who come ONLY for that. Which is crazy to think. I'm going to stop now before Harris shows up and calls me out for the several humblebrags included above.

That's really great Klem, you must be very proud. I have 18 years to think about this and in the end it's not likely my decision, I'm just skeptical that college is worth the expense. It seems to me that there are other options for the same time and money that might be more valuable. I'm sure the world will be a different place at that point and who knows what we'll all think then. Thanks for writing and listening!

The shows have two components, only one is the podcast. I think they are running about 1hr 45mins - 2 hrs for the whole show.
