Oh, man, speaking in tongues...that's a flashback to my childhood Wednesday nights and Sunday mornings.
-
This movie was like a shittier version of "Sister Act." And this Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton feeling themselves too much. Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton are much better in an ensemble cast surrounded by better actors that are going to carry the movie.

Those song at the end reminded of that episode in South Park where Cartman wrote "Christian" songs by randomly placing the word "god" in all of these love songs. Its hard to make a Christian song out of Usher's "Yeah!" The original song is about going into the club, getting fucked up, and feeling up on women. Explain how God is going to make you "blow", son? Are you talking about "blow" in the carnal sense or the biblical sense.

Since this is your first time, listening to the podcast, Andrew calls out all cities in the U.S. as being somewhat racist. As a POC, you can't get away from it. Refer to my previous statement that the level of racism that a particular POC will tolerate is personal preference.
-
Lol, I would hate to be Chelsea's friend -- all she would do is fantasize about killing you. In crazy, torturous ways.
-
Should have added that the categorization of "less" is really up to the POC in question. It's not some absolute numbering scale.
-
Njrefugee's problem was that they called Chicago racist and he felt that the city wasn't racist, blah, blah, blah. But Andrew is pretty quick to call out every major city in the U.S. as being racist, some just less so than others.

Episode 149 β Basketball Vs. Hockey Fans
wakefresh replied to admin's topic in Yo, Is This Racist?
Soccer fans are the most violent fans in all of sports. -
Damn, I like your style, son. Your two rebuttals to Wien's stupidity were spot on and to the point.
-
This isn't "Yo, is this a sweeping generalization?" This is "Yo, is this racist?" Racism not just about stereotypes, it is about practices, institutions, and the power dynamic that keeps minority people oppressed. And you're from Arkansas, where the governor brought troops in to keep black kids from going to school. This is also the same state that elected this man.
-
Man, if your main complaint about a podcast that is devoted to social justice is that your hometown city looks and sounds racist it is probably because it is racist. Yes, Chicago is just like every other major city in this country. It is racist. It is segregated into "white" areas and "black" areas. There is a history of disenfranchisement of minority peoples. That shit didn't just go way when you were born. It didn't disappear when Barack Obama was elected president. Hell, if Chicago isn't racist, like you say, then why is the Southside of Chicago still majority black. Has the same percentage of the black population as it did when your city forebearers red-lined that district for "the negroes." What it sounds like is that you want to continue the racist practices of your city forebearers and take credit for being "progressive". Can't do it, son. You have to choose one or the other, and the majority of Chicagoans chose to keep those racist traditions, institutions, practices in place.

Also Mean Girls is the last time you saw Lindsay Lohan look normal. Its shocking how different she is now.
-
I do remember this movie and vaguely remember liking it. But I also liked "Mac and Me" as kid as well, so there's no accounting for the taste of the child.
-
Where the hell are you all finding these obscure movies? I can't believe that any of you have this in your DVD collection. I doubt a movie of this caliber would have an anniversary Blu-Ray release.

This woman's take on "Girls" is fucking stupid. The reason people were pissed about "Girls" is because white women were pushing Dunham's view as the voice of a generation and that it was so groundbreaking, blah, blah, blah. But to everyone else who didn't have white skin, it was the same story that has already been told -- the trials and tribulations of well-to-do white women in the big city. Its no different than "Sex and the City," save that one of the main characters isn't conventionally attractive. There was one really stupid critic who tried to use the fact the Dunham was heavy set as a check off of body diversity and racial diversity (because every black woman is heavy). And yes, nothing happens in a vacuum. So the fact that she was the offspring of a pair of New York art world celebs, and then goes on to get her own show ripped from the pages of her diary is infuriating. Don't sell that shit to me or anyone else as "groundbreaking" or "revolutionary". It's the ramblings of the upper class. It doesn't reflect the real world because she has never had to live in the real world.

If there was any justice to this movie, Matt Dillion's character would have been shot to death by Luda's character.

The Happening - (it's never happening, but talk about it if you want)
wakefresh replied to temjeito's topic in Bad Movie Recommendations
It looks the people have spoken! The Happening is crushing it right now on FYI. Damn, y'all really hate this movie. -
I don't think you would say anything was racist -- whether the racism be subtle, overt, or inadvertent. I would argue all of those movies are adding to the propagation of the myth of white superiority. If black people can't be the heroes in the biggest, most important movement in their own population's history -- the Civil Rights Movement -- then what does that say about black people. Just like what thestray said earlier -- it would be like making movie after movie about feminism but having the main hero be a male. I don't care if one of these shitty as movies had better sound editing than the next, or a better plot than the other. They main premise is the same for all of them, and that's why they are shit.
-
This is what really nailed it home for me. This movie is a part of a grand tradition of appropriation that goes on continually in this country. Minority person does something. White person takes it, introduces it to other white people. Black person is ignored. The fact that the writer didn't even want to make things right with this woman further cemented that she didn't really understand the shit she was saying in the book.

I put that movie in when I was testing something for the site. I stand by its inclusion and the tag added to it.

If your whole career is partially based off of those plastic wonders, then you had better show them. When she has unleashed her mortal coil, I hope her breasts have their own separate tombstone next to her.

You guys totally missed Nocando's joke, the best joke of the podcast: "Put molly in Rick Ross' fried chicken...he ain't even notice"

Episode 61 β Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot
wakefresh replied to admin's topic in How Did This Get Made?
I feel like this was the reason he even signed on to do this film. "So, there's a scene where I can get a look at Getty upclose? Hell yeah, man, I'll be there!" -

So, is he the one pitching the Saddam Hussien biopic, "Arabian Caligula"?
