  1. But I'm a black person and I agree with Andrew. Does that mean that Nocando's opinions are invalidated or will you go back to what you would usually do and ignore the voices of PoC? And what Louis Farrahkan is engaging in is prejudiced thinking. He is very prejudiced against Jewish people. But the Nation of Islam does not own a major television station where they can pump out this message of anti-semitism on a daily basis. They don't even own a majority of local newstations where they can focus exclusively on Jewish activity. They do not make up 99 of the senators in the United States Congress and their members do not have a majority control of the House of Representatives. They literally have no power in this country to act at all. But prejudiced white people do have the power in the country. That's the definition of racism.

I like the overall look for this. Bootstrap FTW! The only thing is that you're allowing the user to input the title. Don't trust these people, they're dum dums! Just parse out the IMDB ID through the link. Here's the regular expression I used to get out the id. ([a-z]{2}[0-9]+) I don't know what language you're using for the backend, just remember that some will want a delimiter on either side. either a "#" or a "/".

since everyone else is throwing out ideas, here is mine http://whats-on-hdtgm.com/. I think, what they need is something that will be able to take in requests and take votes based on a subset of what Shannon chooses. So, there should be one part that logs requests and another part where they can pull out 5-10 for people to vote on for that week. Remember, building the app is only half the battle....the other half is getting accurate requirements and scope.
  4. But white people are in charge. The judges, the police force, business leaders, politicians are overwhelmingly white and have been for 98% of this country's history. I don't its wrong to gloss over that and not take that into consideration when talking about the power structure in the country. Pointing that out does not perpetuate racism. What keeps racism going is the myth of white superiority that is told to other white people in this country, subtly and overtly, through various mediums/mechanisms/systems. The reason poor whites don't band together with poor blacks is because those poor white have the ability to access the wider mainstream and be successful in it. That is something that even rich black people lack. Chris Rock said it best in his joke, "There is no white person in this audience who would trade places with me....and I'm rich!" There are many spaces in society where black people will never belong, no matter how much money they make (for example, the Henry Louis Gates incident). That access is powerful and will help a poor white person get to a middle class white person. The other power players in society -- other white men, but it is increasingly adding white women -- will look upon that white person as a peer. They will see themselves in that other white person and relate to them better than an Asian woman or a black lesbian. Even in their status as poor whites, they still have the a major political party and political movement telling them that they are the salt of the earth and the true backbone of the nation. For every type of white person in this nation there is a story, a narrative, to make them feel good. For every type of black person in this nation, there is a story to tell you how much you are not worth anything. If you're poor, then you're "ghetto". if you are rich, then you're "uppity'.

I'm working on something as well, but am using omdbapi instead. imdbapi has a rate limit of 3,000 per hour, but that doesn't hold for omdb. They all return the same information anyway. FYI, hayden, you won't be able to show the poster that comes in the JSON results from either one. It gives a 403 error because your server isn't on the whitelist at the CDN they use. I'm thinking that the correct usage would be one vote per movie. In addition to the point made by hayden, it would be nice for Scheer to be able to filter through the votes based on the date, so they can just choose a date range and pick the movie with the highest votes for that week. Or not, if it is something that they don't feel comfortable reviewing, ala the Smurfs.
  6. With her answer, this guest is head and shoulders above many of the guests you've had on so far. The only other one that was as good was the dude that wrote "Stuff White People Like."

    Episode 105 β€” Ghetto

I think using this word as an adjective is both racist and stupid. Andrew is correct once again, in this country it has become synonymous with Black people. Just like the term "urban".

The original spec from Paul was something that will be able to take suggestions, count their votes and give them a backend to manage all of it. The problem I see is that if you use Survey Monkey is that if people write-in a title, they are not always going to use the canonical form. So you could end up with one vote for "Running Man", another vote for "The Running Man" and another vote for "Runnin' Man". There should be a way to normalize all of the input so that it is standard across the board.

    Episode 99 β€” Django Unchained

I think Andrew touched on the two major problematic points of Django Unchained: 1) this movie would have never been released had it been pitched by a black director (I would love to see a Hughes Brothers version of this movie). It would have been seen as too upsetting to the status quo and there would have been a larger outcry from the white community about its violent content as an attempt to censor it. Not saying that were no cries of "too much violence" about this movie, but those voices would have been much louder and had a more prominent stage had a black director been at the helm. 2) Taratino does somehow think that he's been bestowed with the magical power of making racial slurs against black people and for some reason, black people are not supposed to get upset...just because. If you go back into his early writing (True Romance) and the n-word is littered throughout the movie. That is problematic and it does get on my nerves.

    Episode 99 β€” Django Unchained

Actually, institutional racism explains everything about Red Tails. This George Lucas film didn't get any big push from the studios. To put this in context, Lucas can attach his name to a shitty Star Wars cartoon and you will hear about it from the mountaintops. Red Tails got about the same push as Sucker Punch -- meaning if you were not a part of those communities (African-American, comic book nerds), you weren't going to hear about them until the week of the movie release. Lucas has been in the game longer than Snyder and has had more money for the studios than Snyder has. So why is his movie getting the same treatment as an up and coming director's? Hmmm.... Lucas even spoke to this in an interview where he related he had the hardest time selling this film. I think he even had to put some of his own money into the film to get it made, because no one wanted anything to do with it, even as a script. Lucas said he was surprised because now that he was selling this story about African American fighter pilots it was like people forgot who he was. Hmmm.... Deniers, like yourself, have stated many reasons why the failure of Red Tails was ANYTHING other than racism. Race played no part, people like you say. It was a business decision... Ask yourself why is it a "good" business decision to pass on a movie with African-American war heroes as the protagonists? Could it be related to the type of films that Hollywood usually makes, where the black actors are either 1) background noise, 2) the bad guys, or 3) a prop to get beaten up to show how badass the white protagonist is (an example of this is the Rorchasch(sp?) jail scene in "The Watchmen" or when the Joker bursts into the mob meeting in the "Dark Knight")? I think it is.

Episode 97 β€” Are We All Racist?

The problem is that this guest, while promoting the concept that everyone is racist, on the other hand will never ever call anything racist without getting the last minutiae of detail about the situation. Which is it, Julian? If everyone is a little bit racist, then it is not really out of line to automatically assume that their actions are racist.
  16. This Julian guy is something else. What does he mean that the biggest problem is people calling other folks on their racism? Wouldn't the biggest problem be that there is so much fucking racism in the world? And I love that he doesn't know anything about Chinese history, or history at all, but he is ready to proclaim that there has been no Chinese dictators. If you don't know anything about a subject, please shut the hell up. Don't bring it up and certainly don't start a conversation tangent on it.
  17. I disagree. If someone is walking by you and you know them from another setting, it is a common courtesy to at least give a head nod. Someone outright ignoring you is on purpose and fucking rude and I'm going to assume racist, because why give the asshole the benefit of the doubt.

Episode 56 β€” Nothing But Trouble

Digital Underground was the shit back in the day! They were in this crazy movie and the Addams Family 2 as well. Shock G must have had some major Hollywood connects.
  19. What I love about you is that you admittedly don't know anything about what you are talking about, but are 100% ready to say that there is absolutely no racial bias going on at all. That is amazing to me. No, when you play pickup basketball, you call "next." While the two other teams are playing, your job is to get together a group to play with. When the losers of the current game walk off the court, you got a few minutes usually to shoot around, set up who will be playing what position, and defensive assignments. You pick your team on the group of guys sitting on the floor watching the current game. Many times you don't even get to see them walk, much less how high they can jump. You make judgments on them based on their appearance. That's why your statement and Nocando's statements are stupid. You are already admitting the selection is based on superficial means, but apparently the color of someone's skin doesn't factor into this at all! Even though this is the first thing someone sees other than a person's gender. That's why you and him apologize for everything. "You have to have more than race..." why is that? Race dictates what school you're going to, where you live, how long you will live, job opportunities, and everything else in American life, but not pick up basketball.
  20. But white folks don't really listen to black people when black folks DO say something is racist. So why start now?
  21. But Nocando apologizes for everything. Like with the basketball ep, that was real stupid. When you're playing pickup basketball not everyone is running combine drills where you can accurately reflect their skills. The guy from Richmond was picking black people first because of a common stereotype that says black people are just "naturally" good at basketball. I'm glad Andrew stated the obvious even if Nocando wanted to pussyfoot around the subtext of the caller's actions. "Maybe that guy saw you working and figured you would be a good worker, and he just wanted to make sure you will be around for a long time. That's not necessarily racist." -- Nocando's views on slavery.
  22. You want an example of wrestling being racist, I can give you two really good examples. One is the big fight between the Iron Sheik and Sgt Slaughter during the Persian Gulf War. Even as a 11-year-old, you could see that this fight was a sublimation of all of the anger and anxiety over U.S. troops going to a ground war. The first one in about a decade since that mess in Grenada. The second is the Million Dollar Man Ted DeBiase's servant, Virgil. DeBiase would regularly humiliate Virgil during their stage intros and generally treat Virgil as shit. Virgil was black, by the way...

    Episode 68 β€” Chris Brown

The expressions of racism against Chris Brown are not all that subtle. Domestic abuse, partner abuse and all of it is very important and there is a discussion to be had on that level. Why does Chris Brown still have a substantial female fanbase? Why are domestic abuse cases handled they way they are, and can something be done to change that? But if you want to have those discussions, they also dovetail into discussions about how THIS particular case has been handled by the media. Andrew was right when he said we live in a world where the crime scene photos from a white perp would not be shown. Once again, I go to Charlie Sheen, a man who has spent his adult life abusing drugs and women, only to land one a popular TV show where he basically played himself, in all of its misogynistic glory. Chris Brown is one of the most hated men in the U.S., right there with Mike Vick. I think if you were interested in promoting social justice, you wouldn't just sweep aside the obvious implications that race has to do with the public treatment of Chris Brown.

Episode 12 β€” Mazel Tov, My Nigga

It's good that you don't agree with the OP. That guy was talking crazy. On your other point though, it is generally not seen as a "cool" thing by white society to adopt black music, culture, etc unless said culture and music have been depopulated of black people, i.e. the the comment about blues music someone made in the podcast. There are plenty of examples where white people who go against the grain by liking Wu-Tang instead of Arcade Fire are dismissed as "bros", "wiggers", and "wannabees." I mean, there is a whole show on Earwolf dedicated to mocking such a person (Owen and TJ read the News). Nick Kroll made up a character on Comedy Bang Bang (Chance, ex-boyfriend of Chelsea Peretti) that revolved around the same topic. So, I would check the assumption that A) white people think black culture is cool and that said white people got into the culture because of an admiration of black artist in the genre and not a few token white artists. But also, if black people really dictated on any level what white people do, there would not be any blackface, [sarcasm] Maybe black people haven't made not being racist "cool enough" for white people to adopt it. [/sarcasm]

Actually that is not true. Where was the equivalent of Jenny 5 harassing Mel Gibson? There wasn't because there is not the same level of hatred, not by a mile.
