There's a racist way, and a not racist way, to make friends with people of other races. Andrew explained this well enough in the podcast so I won't bother repeating it. If I were to give advice to someone like her, I would just say try to put yourself in situations where you would naturally meet and befriend people of other races and cultures.

In this interview, Jon came off as sort of an arrogant jerk... AND YET I LIKE HIM MORE AFTER LISTENING TO IT. Maybe it's because he's so funny, or just charismatic? Maybe it's because as arrogant as he can be in some ways, he still respects the greatness in others and is very obviously genuine when he praises them. Or maybe it's because he is, in spite of everything, very relatable. I think his flaws make him more likeable in some ways. Great stories, though, and a wonderful interview overall. I learned a lot and it was fun to listen to the whole time. And while I always knew this, I have to say, my god the man is talented.

I thought this would be a good bracelet for Sir Richard. Troubled times are ahead, and I think any source of clarity or guidance would be welcome.

Overall I like it, and I think separating podcasts into categories is a good idea. The one obvious issue is that right now the podcasts are so heavily weighted towards the "comedy" category. Might I suggest that you have subgroups within "comedy"? My one major gripe is that now there isn't enough room to display the podcasts on the front page. It used to be that you could go on the front page and click on all the podcasts that had been updated in the last few days--it also served as a good way to tell, at a glance, whether irregularly updated podcasts (like I4H "Bonus Cuts") had been posted. But now, there are only 3 comedy podcasts being displayed on the front page in spite of the fact that 5 new podcasts came out in one day! Whetever format you use, I think it's important to make sure you can display all podcasts for that day.

No love for Snow? ;_;

I think Andy does lean too much towards sheltering kids with movies. I mean, first of all, kids love to be scared. We, as adults, may think that scary stuff is wrong for kids but they love it. I mean, didn't most of us like stuff like ghost stories when we were kids? If anything, American kids' entertainment should be MORE willing to show things like death and real loss. We think stuff like this should be kept out of kids' movies because we feel like they're not ready to deal with things like the main character dying... and yet millions of kids ARE dealing with the death of people they love in real life.

Episode 230 β Something for Everything

I don't know about the freestyle rap contest, but Neil definitely won the "creeping me out" contest! -
Episode 192 β Plantation Style Wedding
action52 replied to JulyDiaz's topic in Yo, Is This Racist?
Maybe this is being way nicer than they deserve, but I could even be fine with having a plantation wedding. I mean sure, the worst of them had slaves being routinely beaten, raped, and killed. But there were plenty of plantations that didn't have slavery--there were plantations in non-slave states, for one, and I wouldn't doubt there were plantations owners out there who didn't believe in slavery. I don't necessarily consider that inherent to plantations. In fact, I think it would be pretty easy to have a "plantation-style" wedding, and not have it be horrifying and racist. All you have to do is NOT FUCKING HIRE BLACK PEOPLE TO ACT LIKE SLAVES AND SERVE YOU. That's what seems so fucked up to me personally. It would be so easy to just hire some goddamn white people to wait on you. But the fact that they would go out of their way to make sure that this is a bunch of 1800s style white people being served by black people dressed as slaves, just to give it that "authentic" feel, is where it crosses the line from "pretty weird, maybe racist" to "KKK-level racist." -

And even more so among the fans! But about the Phish stuff seeming less interesting, I think the biggest reason is that you can't help but compare it to Analyze Phish, which is one of the greatest things in the universe to listen to. -
Episode 89 β Authentic Redneck Dialect

Four guests on the show? What the fuck is this, Improv 5 Humans? GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER BESSER! WE WILL NOT STAND FOR THIS BLATANT FALSE ADVERTISING THAT COMPROMIZES THIS FINE PODCAST AND RUINS THE EARWOLF BRAND! (I am totally kidding. I can't wait to listen to this episode.) -
Coming back to say I like the little tweaks that have been done since I created this. Much clearer and easier to navigate overall. Also, when I looked on my smartphone there was a different layout that I liked very much--I hope it will become the same way on PCs very soon!

Wow, Andrew just said nobody can do any voices, ever! Did you hear that Comedy Bang Bang? Way to bite the hand that feeds you Andy! -
OH MY GOD A NEW ANALYZE PHISH EPISODE I JUST HAD A PODGASM
-
Hearing them talk about the movie, I knew it would turn out that the original script had her being his daughter, and they had changed it so that she was his love interest instead. And in true Hollywood fashion, they were super lazy about it so they just left in all the clues and foreshadowing telling you she was his daughter.

So in this movie we have the LA cops believing a black convicted criminal's word over a white police officer's. I thought this was supposed to be science fiction, not fantasy!

I'm glad people finally acknowledged my post! Having nobody respond, even to tell me it sucked, was driving me crazy. I was starting to wonder, is it because the song is so far off of people's cultural radar that no one even gets it? AM I SO OUT OF TOUCH?! No. It's the children who are wrong.

Episode 44 β Stone Cold Juggalo
action52 replied to JulyDiaz's topic in The Fogelnest Files with Jake Fogelnest
Awesome to see Nathan Rabin on the show! I'm really looking forward to the write-up on the AV Club's podmass. THE REST It's hard to imagine why such a disgusting human being would even be allowed inside the Earwolf studios. Hopefully this was recorded before they knew he was a backstabbing turncoat who abandons his fellow writers. In any case, this episode is unlistenable. -
Episode 184 β Paula Deen: Assumed Racist?
action52 replied to Brett Arnold's topic in Yo, Is This Racist?
"But what would be the alternative? That they say she is clearly a racist and she still gets to keep her TV show, her endorsements, her merchandising deals?" Well, if it had been known from the start then maybe she wouldn't have gotten the TV show, the endorsements, and the merchandizing so easily. If someone is an asshole, or a liar, they usually don't get the kinds of TV and endorsement deals that Paula does. There are many people on TV that are horrible human beings, but they get to be on TV because people "love to hate" them, and watch them out of morbid fascination or because they're hoping to see them self-destruct. Such as Donald Trump, Charlie Sheen, and most of the cast of the Jersey Shore. If Paula Deen had this kind of success, I wouldn't like it, but I could maybe live with it the way I've learned to live with all the other horrible people that are famous for horrible reasons. "Do you believe she is a victim of the media?" Eh, not really. Maybe a little, but then the benefits she has gotten from their racism far outweigh any negative consequences. Also I want to point out that saying the media is hypocritical does not make Deen any less wrong. "Is the media wrong in highlighting her racism?" Of course not. I think I made it clear that the only problem is that I wish they would just do it from the start. "Are the companies fleeing from her morally wrong to do so?" Well, I'm sure that some of them are probably only fleeing because they fear the damage to profits if her bad image rubs off on their product. And they wouldn't care at all if this stuff were still secret. These companies are just morally wrong in everything they do. On the other hand, there might be some companies that sponsored her because they genuinely didn't know she was a racist, and now are genuinely leaving due to moral outrage. These companies are morally justified, and were just fooled like everyone else. "If most of the media is racist like you say then why do they even consider racism a "serious charge"?" So they can see themselves as not racist. They can feel all morally righteous as they decry the obvious forms of racism while not overlooking the more subtle but pervasive forms of racism they perpetrate. Most of them probably don't even perceive what they're doing as racism. "Who deemed it so?" White people. They couldn't get away with being overtly racist anymore, but still wanted to reap the benefits. --- OK, I think I should clarify some things here. When I say I could tolerate racism to some degree, I'm specifically referring to things like saying racial slurs to other white people, or wanting to have a ridiculous antebellum wedding. I am also speaking on the condition that she is keeping these things in her private life, and not, like, using the TV show as a platform to put her racist ideas forward. Deen most CERTAINLY should be held accountable for any discrimination she has practiced as an employer. Those I consider to be genuinely serious accusations. In general, the law is that you are allowed to think racist thoughts and have racist attitudes, as long as they do not result in you taking racist actions. Those are the standards I would hold people like Deen to. If she is saying and doing racist things, but not breaking the law, and it's not affecting the work she does... well, I guess I would prefer the networks not to hire her but quite frankly there are a lot of bigger problems when it comes to racism. Underrepresentation, stereotyping, covering up racism when it exists, being slaves to the white male 18-40 demographic, the list goes on and on. These are things that I think NEED to be changed. -
Episode 184 β Paula Deen: Assumed Racist?
action52 replied to Brett Arnold's topic in Yo, Is This Racist?
Oh, there are reasons. Racism is a serious charge to make. It's this weird black-and-white attitude we have in our society, where either you are totally not racist, or you are totally racist and no better than a cross-burning KKK member. It's basically just there so certain white people can consider themselves more open-minded and tolerant than other white people. In the end it just makes it harder for white people to own up to the real, more subtle racism, that they are guilty of. The point is that in some ways being racist is almost treated like being a criminal, and no one in the media wants to be the first to make such a serious accusation. Especially since most of this is just second-hand accounts from people who heard her say racist stuff. Racism is generally a hard thing to prove, and you don't want to be the one source making accusations on someone who is popular and have it backfire on you. Not only can you get negative publicity, but you can even get sued for slander/libel. But once the silence is broken, everybody comes forward with the stories they've been sitting on. Because now that everybody else is doing it, the danger of making false accusations is gone. That's how the media has always worked, but it's probably worse than it's ever been. -
Episode 184 β Paula Deen: Assumed Racist?
action52 replied to Brett Arnold's topic in Yo, Is This Racist?
I don't have a problem with them calling her out, so much as that they instantly kick her off of TV even though they're doing other racist shit everywhere else. Personally I wouldn't even necessarily mind a racist like her being on TV, as long as it was acknowledged that she was racist and treated like any other personality flaw. But the networks want to keep up the pretense that they don't tolerate racism, so whenever someone crosses the arbitrary line of being blatantly racist enough about it to get mentioned in the media, they act all shocked and outraged and turn the outed racist into a pariah. I know, but I've heard people try to defend her by saying this. Paula denies having used the word recently. Of course I don't believe her. The point I was making is that even if her side of the story WERE 100% true, and she hadn't used the word since the 60s, it still wouldn't let her off the hook. I was just saying that even with the most extreme, revisionist, FOX News version of the story, she is still obviously racist. -
Episode 184 β Paula Deen: Assumed Racist?
action52 replied to Brett Arnold's topic in Yo, Is This Racist?
I kind of do understand the caller's feelings. It's like, yeah, of course a lady like that is going to be super-racist, but the media is so full of shit like that it's almost like who cares? It's easy to get jaded. And sometimes it does feel hypocritical the way they'll arbitrarily pick one person who's just a little too blatantly racist and then persecute them just to make themselves feel better about themselves and excuse all the other, more subtle racism they do every day. Not to excuse Paula Deen, but I don't think people like her are the real problem. Oh, but make no mistake she is still racist. So there's the whole antebellum-themed wedding, with slaves and everything, which is of course a huge red flag. And even if we believe her side of the story, the stuff she said is terrible. Now look, I'm not saying we can't forgive people for being racist in the past. I don't think you should be persecuted just for, say, using the n-word back in the 60s. But it's like many race-related things: it's not that you did it, it's the way you react when you get called on it. "I used to say the n-word a lot in the 60s, and it was wrong, and I feel terrible about it." -Probably not all that racist "I used to say the n-word in the 60s, but so did everybody else." -Probably super racist -
Episode 13 β Aziz Ansari

Another excellent episode. Not quite my favorite, but then few things an match that episode. If you're wondering which episode I'm talking about, I'd like to tell you about it, but unfortunately I can't. You see, I come from a foreign land, and haven't the foggiest notion of how to behave. -
You didn't mention Nick Kroll, Matt Besser, Lennon Parham, or Jessica St. Clair, but they get plenty of acclaim so I would hardly call them underrated. Tig Notaro! I want to hear her on CBB again. I know she's on Professor Blast-Off and everything, but her CBB appearances are some of the funniest stuff ever. The one with her and Bob Ducca is still maybe my favorite of all time. Tom Lennon always is hilarious, as Li'l Gary or anybody else. I really enjoyed this dorky, effeminate "youth preacher" he did around New Years 2010. Patton Oswalt. He's famous in general but I think people have forgotten how great he was on this show. As much as I love the Jason / Andy Daly episodes, I really want to see him with Patton Oswalt again. Kevin Nealon has been fun and pleasant on every episode. He seems low-key but always plays a good straight man for the "wackier" characters. Weird Al has also been great in every appearance.
