The Kiss of the Spider Woman (RIP Hector Babenco)
FelipeSobreiro posted a topic in Movie Suggestions
Hey guys! Hector Babenco passed away last night, sadly, and that make me think a bit about his movies. An interesting film of his to discuss for inclusion in The Canon would be THE KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN from 1985. It has amazing performances by Raul Julia and William Hurt (who won an Oscar). It was also nominated for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay, and lost in all those categories to Out of Africa (!). Despite being in English, it's a South American movie (as I've previously mentioned in another thread, there's yet to be a single movie from down here considered for inclusion in the Canon). There's a lot of interesting themes for Amy and Devin to talk about: it's a prison movie, it's a political movie, there are some gay themes, there is a meta "movie-within-a-movie", etc. And, well, the sad fact that Babenco was an interesting director who never got a lot of audience abroad (i.e. there in the United States), other than stuff like Pixote, Ironweed and Carandiru. Thanks! -
Ah, I didn't watch that one.

I don't know if the Sasha Grey movie you guys were talking about is WOULD YOU RATHER (starring Jeffrey Combs, by the way!), but she's really bad in it...

Boogie Nights is a great movie. But There Will Be Blood is transcendent!

Hey guys! Today I unintentionally watched two bizarre supernatural / horror movies about divorce, back to back: THE BROOD (David Cronenberg, 1979) and POSSESSION (Andrzej Zulawski, 1981). The styles are very different, The Brood is more clearly a B-movie, very cheaply made and with some campy elements, while Possession is more of an arthouse movie, but it's also campy in how hysterical and over the top it gets. Their point in common is that both movies deal with a family disintegrating (both movies show the wife as being the active agent of the separation) from a supernatural, creepy perspective, and they were both shot a couple of years apart.

And if The Brood isn't a right match, how about POSSESSION vs REPULSION?

Maybe I used the term wrong... I don't mean hysterical and campy like an AlmodΓ³var movie or Rocky Horror Picture Show, which are tongue-in-cheek and melodramatic, aware of their own tackiness. By hysterical I mean LITERALLY hysterical as in insane (not funny), over the top, out of control. Every emotion is explosive. My favorite scenes of Possession are of just Isabelle Adjani and Sam Neill SCREAMING at each other's faces, running around their apartment. And by campy... I don't know. I guess that's the wrong way to frame it but I didn't know how else to say it. I think there's some amazing scenery-chewing all over the movie, it may be played straight, "unaware of it's own tackiness" (to bring that point back) as a lot of high-brow art does, but in the end it just approximates camp without even wanting to. There's a scene with Adjani having some sort of breakdown in a subway station and she's writhing all over the floor and throwing milk on herself and bumping against the walls and drooling and kicking... It's almost a performance art piece, that perhaps someone more sophisticated would watch and take very seriously but I found almost funny in how intense it's played. Still, I wouldn't describe Possession as straight-up campy, you're right. Sorry for the rambling response!

I've yet to hear you guys discuss a South American movie. There's a lot of stuff from Argentina, Brazil and other countries that could be fodder for good episodes. City of God, Nine Queens, The Second Mother, Embrace of the Serpent, Pixote...

This is a shoo-in. And I love Devin decrying adult animation as something for perverts in one sentence and stating that this movie is one of his favorites in the next one! Hahaha

I think it's a good movie, very beautiful but sort of leaves your mind after a while.

PROPOSAL: All "versus" episodes have a "neither" option
FelipeSobreiro replied to action52's topic in The Canon
No. The whole idea is that in the versus episodes one of the movies MUST go into the canon. Some people will like that, some people will dislike that. If you don't like either movie, I suggest you do like I do in those cases: just don't vote. -
Anyone else having trouble Download the latest episode?

Same here, using Downcast in Brazil. -
No.

So I guess all of the old discussions / recommendations are gone now?

Hey guys, I'm a longtime user of Downcast for the iPhone (and listener to scores of Earwolf/Wolfpop podcasts) but since I was already a WTF premium user, I got to use the Howl Premium version, so I downloaded the app. What a disappointment! I don't know where the files I download go to! It actually seems like the files delete when I close the app, so I have to redownload everything, EVERY TIME. It's a hassle to sort of navigate through my favorites and try to see what's downloaded and what isn't. I want to use this app (while keeping my other podcasts in good old Downcast), but it's really not worth the money without some basic features! If I may give you some suggestions: 1) Please set up a clear section with the "downloaded but unplayed" episodes. 2) Please let the users control via settings whether to keep the already played episodes. Right now they're deleted automatically. 3) Please don't let the files be deleted when the app is closed! Thanks!

FelipeSobreiro replied to JulyDiaz's topic in The Cracked Podcast
There is a movie about the World War I Christmas truce, I saw it on the theaters here in Brazil years ago, it's a 2005 French production starring (among others) Diane Kruger and Daniel Bruhl, it was nominated for Best Foreign Movie at the Oscars that year: Joyeux Noel -
