    Episode 216.5 — 1/23/15 TWO CHARTED 155

Dunno if it's your thing, but they play a lot of listener-submitted punk and hardcore on Jonah Raydio. In fact, you don't even need to listen to the show for new music suggestions, since they put a track listing on most episode pages. Jonah has been particularly effusive in his praise of Fartbarf and PAWS.

Episode 216 — Indie Gu Gu

Yeah, Brett's been killing it on the audio cues lately.

Episode 216 — Indie Gu Gu

There's a country/folk/blues hybrid with the catch-all label "Americana" that seems to be a reaction to the insufferable Modern Country music, largely populated by younger artists with a wider range of influences. My favorites are and (RIP) and , though the label is so widely applied (like "Alternative") that it's hard to pin down whether they are a representative sample.

July: The RSS link (under the logo image) on the Hooray Show page is broken, because it's missing an “http://” prefix.

    Hooray Show

The sample clip that was in the RSS feed was Horatio and Ben Schwartz singing "I Wish It was Christmas Today", which you can still download here.

  14. Being a part of the podcast community for years has taught me that a significant portion of the audience are "on the spectrum", and one of the symptoms of Asperger's is an inability to discern intent based on someone's tone of voice. It is literally impossible for some people to recognize when a host is saying something sarcastically and/or with a smile on their face. Hence, when someone doesn't get what seems like an obvious joke, there's a 50/50 chance they're legitimately incapable of understanding it and not just a stupid idiot asshole.

    Episode 234 — Mouth Jazz

Hodgman was fantastic. Whoever played Berman isn't credited on the episode page.
  16. Besser's Mexican accent sounded like Peter Lorre, and Pam's sounded like Natasha from Boris and Natasha. It was a real Justice League of banditos.

    Episode 110 — Clown Dog

If you're hearing an anti-smoking PSA before the show, it's either being delivered by the software you use to listen to podcasts or the SoundCloud player itself. Regardless, the ads in question are not part of Nerd Poker episodes, are beyond the control of the hosts, and in no way reflect the perceived "hypocrisy" of the group. Check your tone.

    A new PFT show?!

I'm worried Earwolf may not have enough space to accommodate the grand piano demanded by that jazzy rascal, Eban Schletter.

Episode 329 — Too Much Tuna Tour

It's possible, but I've never* gotten the impression that comedians are happy working for corporations. Comedians are traditionally self-sufficient businesspeople, responsible for booking their own shows, deciding when and where to tour, which projects to work on, etc. Being beholden to a network—and the requisite studio executives, notes, and deadlines—seems to naturally chafe. One example: Louis CK declined numerous offers from FX until they agreed to allow him to do whatever he wanted with minimal oversight, albeit on a shoestring budget. Comedy Central has tried to embrace the "Louis CK model" with CC:Direct, offering downloadable specials directly to consumers for $5, but I've never heard a comedian offer more than a half-hearted endorsement (including Neil Brennan, Kumail Nanjiani, and Jonah Ray) because they receive 0% of the proceeds. Meanwhile, the only incentive for comedians to push Netflix specials (Moshe Kasher, Chelsea Peretti, and the Sklars) is because higher numbers increase the likelihood of making another Netflix special, which must generate higher numbers, which… * Except perhaps Key & Peele?
