The point is that you should first make sure that that's what is being said, because making a generalization about a region or a group is not necessarily the same as judging each individual. I see people talking past each other a lot, conflating the two.

I think it'd be useful for both sides of the debate to recognize the necessity of generalizations to learning and understanding almost anything about the world. Generalizations by definition have exceptions, sometimes lots of them, so the argument "but not everyone is like that!" isn't very persuasive. That's why generalizations are usually not true or false, they're strong or weak. It's stereotypes we should look out for, there's a difference. All stereotypes are generalizations but not all generalizations are stereotypes. I think it'd be a much more interesting debate if everyone agreed on these terms first.

I read Ascartes' post as basically "shut up and make me laugh". That's how it came off to me, and (not speaking for Matt) that is an entitled attitude a lot of creative people (at least myself) are particularly sensitive to, after pushing themselves and sharing their work with the world. It's quite a way to convey yourself as your FIRST post directly meant to be read by the person you're a "fan" of. These aren't just four clowns clocking in, turning off their brains and juggling for you, it's bizarre to me that someone could view this show in particular as such shallow entertainment. Good comedy, especially this type, is informed by truth and real issues and catharsis, and you can't separate the two. All of the opinions shared circle back to make the comedy better. I think it's fascinating that these guys can dig so deep even through ethical debates for the comedy therein.

For the record I love case closed. Little idiots like that guy might be small potatoes intellectually, but the shit they are spewing is actually very contagious on the Internet and so much of it goes unchecked. My own personal opinion, as someone who loves real debate, is that Matt hardly bullied him at all. I think of bullying as intimidating someone into backing down. Shouting over someone, telling them to shut up, not allowing them to make a point, threats, attacks, etc. I don't think getting down in the mud and making them feel stupid is at all bullying, as long as you're arguing the merits and allow them their space.

Well I can tell you any decisions being made in reference to downloads are based on more precise internal numbers that we have. But don't quote me on that rationale, I think that's at least partly what's behind it but there might be other more important reasons. I'm not in on those talks. The VPN people are extremely fast and professional though, so it's definitely not due to any fuck-ups on anyone's part. Keep in mind it's tough to schedule releases for all of these shows with only 5 business days a week and trying to give each show the window it deserves to get as much attention as possible. Now we're juggling different formats in the equation too. Everybody's time is short, including our listeners, all of the decisions of drop-dates are always about what makes sense for everyone, and it's never easy.

Nobody really likes it but when we release it all at the same time, the watches/listens cannibalize each other. I think that's the reason. Just to think, we didn't even have video a few months ago. I'm glad you guys want more and more.
