Larry Cohen, the guy who wrote Cellular (and Phone Booth) and Directed such classics as The Stuff has died at 77. I guess someone else will have to step up and write whatever would have been the next iteration of communication-device-based thriller film. Perhaps Paul, June, and Jason??? My guess would be VR chat... -Pizmeyre

Episode 149 - The Lawnmower Man: LIVE! (w/ Neil Casey, Emily Heller)
Pizmeyre replied to JulyDiaz's topic in How Did This Get Made?
A bit of info about the symbols that flash during Job's make-smarter sessions. Some of the things that flash by are simply geometric shapes or the occasional mandala, but the real intricate circles with the Hebrew writing etc. are actually magical circles from the "Key Of Solomon." Circles for summoning spirits (or demons) as well as a number of other uses. I saw this film several times at the theater when it was released (mostly as I have been a longtime fan of VR) and around that time I had been reading a copy of the Key Of Solomon so I recognized them right away. It amused me to no end, later in the film, when he mentions "This technology is simply a route to powers that conjurers and alchemists used centuries ago." They were making him smarter, expanding his consciousness, and pelting his brain with magical inscriptions. Sheesh. What did Larry THINK was gonna happen?? :-/ -Pizmeyre -
I posted this to the FB page before remembering it should go here. :-/ Anywho... Now that I know it's available on youtube (and only on youtube I believe), I would like to suggest a future film. Pre-"Revenge of the Nerds" Robert Carradine, and pre-"Terminator" Linda Hamilton in "T.A.G. The Assassination Game." Also starring: Kristin De Bell of "Meatballs" and "Alice In Wonderland: An X-Rated Musical Fantasy"; Perry Lang of "1941" and "Spring Break"; Bruce Abbot of "Re-Animator"; Pre-"Fast Times at Ridgemont High" (barely) Forest Whitaker; Xander Berkeley of allofthemoviesever; And Michael Winslow... (Also, at some point it was released under the name "Everybody Gets It In The End!" with the poster having a picture of a suction-cup dart stuck to someone's butt... Subtle...) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKNRY67J4aE

I sightly misspoke. He "produced" "This Corrosion" and he "co-wrote" and "co-produced" their song "More." -PIZmeyre

To Paul and the gang, Ellen Aim was a "RockStar." Dafoe's character wants her. She's a shining bauble that he's obsessed with. That's why he takes her. To make her "his." Raven is not an ex-boyfriend, he's basically a few steps worse than a stalker. McCoy isn't gay or straight. She's more fluid than that. -PIZmeyre

The thing about this movie is that, like was said, it's "Another Time And Place." That's why you have the 50s look mixed with 80s stylings. Also, Cody has returned from "The War" that has been going on for some time. I think the idea is to imagine if WWII hadn't ended and is still going strong. And you know, Dottie from "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure" was also the singer at the big dance in "Better Off Dead." She also had a small but memorable role in the Jon Cryer/Demi Moore vehicle "No Small Affair" as Jon's character's soon-to-be sister-in-law. Here's the clips of her and her band performing the main songs from Streets Of Fire: Nowhere Fast: and Tonight Is What It Means To Be Young: REALLY good performances. -PIZmeyre

The reason the sound like Meatlof songs is because they are Jim Steinman songs. He's the one responsible for the vast majority of songs Meatloaf did. Also, Air Supply's "Making Love Out Of Nothing At All," Bonniw Tyler's "Total Eclipse Of The Heart' and "Holding Ot For A Hero." even Sister's Of Mercy's "This Corrosion." He has a VERY distinctive musical and lyrical style. He also tends to use what I like to call the "Steinman Reverse" where he uses a lot of opposites in the lyrics: I would do anything for love... But i won't do that; You and me we're goin' nowhere slowly...but we should be goin' nowhere fast; Once upon a time I was falling in love, but now I'm only falling apart; etc. etc. etc. Needless to say, I love the guy. -PIZmeyre

Yep. That would be Scientific American Frontiers, which is exactly where I first learned of him as well. lol -Pizmeyre Also, if anyone sees this, the emphasis is on Piz, not on meyre...

CORRECTION: Paul mentioned the "Google-glass" thing that Dade wears and how it's not a thing... Actually, it very much WAS a thing. Probably best exemplified by MIT's Steve Mann (who created the "Eye Tap" device that several years later Google-Glass would look suspiciously like) and his group of "cyborgs" who were pioneers in wearable computing and would use devices that ranged from face-covering goggles to head-mounted displays just like Dade's. http://www.wearcam.org/computing.html/ He can be seen here on the left. For a while, he also had a portable Ham radio with the antenna sticking out of the top of his cap. He would use it, his wearable PC, and a webcam that (I think) was also attached to his glasses and it would constantly stream pics back to his webserver for people to see. On a sadder note, he was also one of the first people to be assaulted for wearing digital eyeglasses. In a Paris McDonald's, no less... http://eyetap.blogspot.com/2012/07/physical-assault-by-mcdonalds-for.html -Piz

It's more a nod to the man who started and runs the magazine "2600: The Hacker's Quarterly." Though it is not his REAL name, he goes by the name "Emannuel Goldstein" which he took from the character in 1984. He is listed in the credits as one of the hacking consultants for the film. -Piz
