EPISODE 13 — The Tom Leykis Radio Program
telegramsam replied to JulyDiaz's topic in With Special Guest Lauren Lapkus
I made my coffee and breakfast to James' 20+ MINUTE SOLO INTRO this morning, listening to Lauren giggling every 20 seconds (hilarious), as I continued to check the time on my podcast app. I've heard his Leykis before but I knew after minute 10 that I was getting something truly special. It Made My Fucking Week. The only thing that could have made it better (if that's even possible) would be if they could have somehow fit more Lauren into the show while still keeping the same level of James/Leykis (because he was fucking perfect). C+ Ep. -
THIS SHOW IS DOPESAUCE

This episode was pretty good. I laughed a lot. Grepisode.

Harmontown is always great, and they've just started a Shadowrun campaign. The last two episodes have just been them rolling up and describing their characters and their motivations. There's also a really funny bit where David Cross writes an impromptu country song about what "shadow run" means… I love this show because it's comedy, D&D, and Harmon frequently attempting to get deep into social issues (and usually making a mess of things in a really endearing way). The Adventure Zone is great… v funny dynamic there. Crit Juice killing it as always (Never Tell Me the Odds, its Star Wars sister podcast, is pretty good, too, but Crit Juice is the best).

Does Nerd Poker change from early to later podcasts?
telegramsam replied to Cymbeline's topic in Nerd Poker
Great points, Arthwollipot. OK, I've been posting way too much in the last 24hrs, I need to take a break. Looking forward to next week's ep. -
Sorry, I don't think I did a very good job of expressing myself there--I was joking about rooting for the giants. It just seemed like that was the direction the campaign happened to be going in, and I had resigned myself to accepting it. All that I really hope for is a change of direction. I said this in the other thread and I'll say it here: I like this show. I've looked forward to it every Wednesday since it came out. I didn't mean to make you feel like we're coming down on you guys. I think some of us are just frustrated with the campaign's lack of direction. For a lot of us, this is all the D&D we get in life--I for one don't have any friends who are up for playing and I'm not about to just scope out my nearest hobby shop to join a group of people I've never met before. So when your heroes start getting bored with it, it's kind of disappointing. Anyway, my apologies. I just hope you guys can get a little more of a narrative going at some point.

OK, I get it, you guys don't really care what we think. I hope it works out for you.

Does Nerd Poker change from early to later podcasts?
telegramsam replied to Cymbeline's topic in Nerd Poker
I'm going to go ahead and voice an opinion that no one (or hardly anyone) on this thread has acknowledged. I have always loved this show but to be totally honest I am really hoping for a change of pace soon. I really appreciated the emphasis on story in Sark's campaign and have REALLY missed it in Blaine's. I also miss the jokes Blaine used to make when he played a character and wasn't focusing all of (?) his energy on DM'ing. I really appreciate this podcast. It has gotten me through some very tough times. I want it to continue. Don't let it get stuck in a rut where you're not having as much fun (and some listeners aren't either, myself included). I don't agree with the OP. It was great over the first "season." Lately, it has dropped in priority for me. The hosts are great but the dynamic isn't what it was. Story is important (to me). I hope the things I've said aren't hurtful but I wanted to give my feedback in a place where it might be heard and taken seriously. Thanks guys. -
RIP Lyra. RIP my hopes for this campaign. I for one would like to see a new campaign, so I'm rooting for the giants this time.

I don't know about you guys, but I've really enjoyed listening to Crit Juice since Sark and Gerry left, it's funny and fast-paced, even if the actors playing the game aren't well-known. They've had guest players including Jillian Bell (Workaholics, 22 Jump Street) and the group plays a tight and hilarious game of DnD. My only complaint is that they've stopped dead in their tracks since 5th Ed. came out, and even before that they only released one or two episodes a month. Still...

"Let's get some momentum…" THANK GOD FOR DAN TELFER!!! Great job by all today, I definitely had some LOLs.
-
Ramsey, I think it took a lot of courage for you to come forward and say that. And I will say that while I absolutely love this show and still look forward to it every week, I definitely miss the interplay between Sark and Gerry. Several episodes revolved almost completely around their dynamic. On the other hand, I think Blaine is doing a great job considering he's only DM'ed a little outside of the show. The show is still fucking hilarious, and they're bringing in weekly guests to make up for Gerry's absence. I think it would be nice on the other hand if the story had more of an arc to it. All in all I think the NP crew are doing everything they can to deliver a hilarious awesome nerdy free podcast to the listeners and I will continue to listen until I am an old man, which is saying a lot since I'm 27. Peace and love.

I really think it needs to be said: this episode was fucking great. I'm not sure what it was exactly, but there was a real rhythm there that may have been missing in the last few episodes. I really don't want these guys to feel too much pressure to cut down on the bullshit, because I really enjoy it, but it felt like they found their groove on this one.
-
I think I got into it after watching the Comedians of Comedy movies on Netflix.. that was when Brian and Blaine really got my attention. I think shortly after that, I followed them on twitter, and that's how I heard about NP, pretty early on. I also played DnD when I was in my teens, but I wasn't out looking for a DnD podcast--Nerd Poker was actually my first podcast ever. But I love the combination of good comedy and a bit o' fun RP'ing!
-
Eh, I don't know… I'm no sociologist, but something about it rubbed me the wrong way. Also I thought it was weird that it was strictly geared towards heterosexual men.
-
Hammerbeard, I took your suggestion and checked out CritJuice. They are friggin' hilarious, and the storyline and gameplay is way more coherent and fluid than on Nerd Poker (although the shows are meant to be different). Also the incorporation of drinking really kicks things up a notch (although it's been hard not drinking along with them). My only complaint about this podcast is they only post once or twice a month--not nearly often enough.

Thanks, Adam! I love this show and I want it to have awesome sponsors. The other sponsors have been great, btw--so many interesting products and services out there to check out (audible, loot crate, dollar shave club, and cards against humanity come to mind).
-
Yeah, they were a sponsor for this last episode, Smell the Weird Rope. Still waiting for any acknowledgement form Earwolf or anyone connected to the show.
-
Alright, just reiterating the call for removing Art of Charm from your sponsors list. It's really not in the spirit of the podcast/alt comedy in general. I'd like to hear what Earwolf has to say about pickup artists. There are a lot of intelligent, anti-misogyny comedians (male and female) on these podcasts (at least I'd like to think so) and the underlying tone of pick-up "artistry" is misogynistic. AoC is just really not an appropriate sponsor for this show and it kind of hurts the vibe when I hear the ads come on. Thoughts?
-
Did I miss something? Are they off this week? It's not showing up on Earwolf and it didn't download in my podcasts app. Nerd Poker junkie in need of a new episode here...
-
Hey July, thanks for letting us know what's up. I think I can speak for most of us in saying that it's totally ok if there are delays here and there. I'm just glad that there is an episode coming up! Loving the guest host schtick as well!
-
Yeah, I have to be honest, I picked up on that too when I first heard that ad. I don't know if they're really a great sponsor for this show.
-
Very cool, Winston! Definitely not what a lot of us were thinking, but that's why fan art is awesome. I could totally see Tom Waits playing Winter in a live action version, maybe Clive Owen as Dag. A strange but truly interesting take on this group.
