It's been a while since I watched this, but I think I vaguely remember thinking it was a metaphor for not just mental illness but drug addiction more specifically. In any case, this ep definitely makes me wanna watch again, with that director's commentary. edit: Yeah... I seem to recall the state of his apartment at one point seemed particularly drug den-y in a comically ludicrous kind of way. This movie is actually fucking awesome. Like, legit.

Yeah, just watched it. This movie rules. It was obviously made in a context of 80s downtown NY cool art film -- I think.... many weirdness seemed somewhat aware choices if not deliberate, even if they were unfocused to some extent. I think it probably also failed on a couple levels for what they "wanted" though. Cage's committed physicality definitely sells it though, and the vampire drug den shithole is beautiful.
