I make it a habit to never acknowledge a pregnancy until the pregnant person officially says they are pregnant. They can be nine months along and I don't say crap.

Yep. I noticed the picture too, and I even think I might've noticed something in one of the pictures of earlier episodes, but I would never say something unless the person brings it up first. I'm a gentleman, after all!

  2. Fantastic episode, as per usual.

We had a slight discussion about casting times in AD&D in one of the episode threads a couple of weeks ago, and 2nd edition rules basically say:

If only a number is given, the casting time is added to the caster's intitiative die rolls. If the spell requires a round or number of rounds to cast, it goes into effect at the end of the last round of casting time.

So in Blackie's case, his casting time of 3 would mean a +3 to initiative, or at least that the spell would be cast within the same round, and not take 3 rounds to cast.

Doesn't mean the gang can't decide to go with their own rules, ofcourse, but that would possibly nerf spellcasters?

I'm getting from this that there should have been more checks and yet they should have moved the story along quicker.

Nope, that wasn't what I was saying. I said I expected there would've been more to Blackie guessing what was expected from him - it seemed more than a bit of a stretch.

Having said that, I can also see how Sark might think "that would take a lot of time, I want to move things along".

I'm saying the first would have my personal preference, but I also can understand how Sark might come to a different decision. I'm a master of empathy, me.

  4. Is someone FORCING you to listen to this podcast? Are you trapped somewhere and need assistance? Two NEGATIVE posts for 'YES', One NEGATIVE post for 'NO'...

To be fair, although Chaosounds' post may have been too negative in tone, he does make a point - I also kind of felt Sark was leading Blackie to the right conclusion. There are a lot of jumps in logic, there. I expected at least some kind of Intelligence check for remembering where the airlock actually was - it was only opened for a couple of seconds, without warning. Especially after all the intense skill checks happening before, it all seemed a bit.. too convenient.

That said, I also appreciate that Sark might just want the adventure to move the fuck along, and not spend too much time on this stuff.

  5. Not sure Sark or the cast actually read this forum and it's been ten years since I last played a caster in 2nd ed. but I'm almost sure that the casting time in the player HB is in round segments (in second a round is broken into 10 segments for casting) unless it specifically says a # of rounds.

Since the eps. are pre-recorded and for all I know this band of merry fools has flown right into the middle of the sun and are re-rolling new chars. but if anyone see this from the cast have Sark or Brian please check this out in the 2nd ed. players handbook but I'm almost positive that a casting time of 5 means you start casting at your initiative and then 5 initiative slots later that round the spell goes off. It lets casters get interrupted if hit during that portion of the round they are casting but it is not 5 rounds to cast a cure light wounds, that I can almost guarantee. Damien is getting cheated out of his bad ass spelliness!

I looked it up - it's actually simpler than your initiative slot system.. here's what The Holy Text (2nd Ed) says regarding casting time:

If only a number is given, the casting time is added to the caster's intitiative die rolls. If the spell requires a round or number of rounds to cast, it goes into effect at the end of the last round of casting time.

My interpretation would be, that as soon as your place in the initiative queue comes up, you cast the spell. Your wizard having to mumble the words and do a bit of hand-waving makes it more likely that you will cast your spell later in the round.

This would also mean you'd have to state your intention to cast a spell before rolling initiative, and not just when your turn comes up.

So in the case of the aforementioned Light, which has a casting time of 1, you'd get a +1 to your initiative roll, but you'd cast the spell that round.

All that said, I could also see the fun of OP's initiative segment idea.

  6. At first I also was apprehensive at the idea of someone new invading the basement, but I think Anthony turned out fine - he didn't try to do too much, just let things happen and interjected now and then. He was fun.

Nice little reveal on Sir Richard, btw. It's the kind of detail that really fleshes out a character (or in this case, it also de-fleshed him slightly).

Please can we have a full list of all of Gerry's character's deaths? 't Is Hallowe'en, after all..

  7. I do love the Suicide House episodes, but I'm also completely open to doing something else, as long as it's funny. And that's where it kind of failed, for me. I normally love Paul Rust, but this character was just annoying, and little else. Dykeula was a nice idea, but it never really went anywhere.

Actually, I did like Monster Fuck, if only because of the languid, Frank Booth-like pronunciation of "fffffuuuck...", each and every time.

  8. ..sometimes campaigns get a little stuck in the mud.

Exactly this. You can play a whole evening and hardly advance from where you were last time, which is a bit frustrating, but it happens. The banter actually helps, makes it more bearable.

  9. When Ken softly said ".. that's the way you do it..", was that a sly Dire Straits reference, what with Sark using the expression 'dire straits' a couple of times in the introductory part of the episode?

Anyway - I loved this episode. I loooove the banter, and the references were flying thick and fast in this episode. I actually had to stop what I was doing when Sark did his Italian Woody Allen, I had to laugh so hard.

I do like the story, but I don't follow it religiously - for me personally, it's a bit too move from one combat encounter to the next. I prefer the more roleplay-ey kind of game, with more talkin' and shit, you know?

I also think the bantering helps to keep the players sharp, especially Brian, who has the tendency to drop off.

The banter also reminds me of my own games - it's just a style of playing, really. I know we tried to be more serious about it at a time, but that just didn't work, it just wasn't how we wanted to play the game (and have it be, you know, fun.)

  10. But for me the most hilarious moment was when Sarah rolled the one. She's usually so understated compared to the others. My jaw dropped and eyes widened when she just let off that stream of obscenity.

My favourite moment, too. I like how even with all its fire and obscenity, it still came across as slightly understated and strangely tasteful.

** - I’ve thought about making a separate post on the forums discussing which ones I’ve found to be good and which I’d recommend. I think I’m going to do it and I’m hopeful some other Nerd Poker reply with their own favorites.

Please do! I tried listening to some others and they just didn't have the excitement and charm of Nerd Poker.

I'd be interested, too. The only other one I really know is the irregular Penny Arcade podcast, but I have completely soured on PA, what with Krahulik's continuous dickish behaviour.

    Nothing until 7/31-- https://twitter.com/...460299507634176

This week of dead is air is brought to you by drenching cold sweats and those bugs under your skin!

Darn it. Thanks for the update, though.

Was it ever decided if or when they'd switch over to version 2? Is there some kind of poll we could vote in cause I am in favor of it. It seems like the games would flow better with a more comfortable system.

If I remember correctly, Brian Posehn And Friends will be switching to 2nd edition, after the current adventure/campaign is finished.

Personally, I've never really understood why they decided to play 4th ed. when they've always played 2nd ed.
