As this will be one of the final county episodes I want to make a prediction for dumb people town. There will be a story, from Florida of course, about a parent who leaves a young child at home under the supervision of their Alexa device. I have not heard of this actually happening yet, but believe me this will happen.

Wild, Wild, West. I think because it was the first episode I had heard; hard to beat the first time.

I'm glad that someone in the audience brought up 'Flowers For Algernon'; this was basically a retake on that story but with a late 80s early 90s twist- you know with bullies and buns (sadly no roller blades though). In regards to the VR sex scene, Jobe was able to read Marnie's mind and knew her sexual fantasies; he was going to use the VR to try and replicate them. However, unbeknownst to Jobe, the corporation had already altered the VR program by reinstating "batch 5", making it dangerous. This is why he let her be while she was stuck, and shocked that it hurt her- this is also why he turned violent at the end. -
Amazing Grace and Chuck (1987)

WHOA, this hits close to home; this was one of my favorites as a kid. Somewhat relevant with all the recent athlete protests, which allowed me to bring up this movie. -
Wow, so many archetypes thrown at you in the first 20 minutes (including the cheesy portrayal of VR)
-
Just a heads up, the full movie is available on Youtube. Just finished watching it; its a less fun, more artsy, annoying version of 'American Psycho'. Someone wrote on IMDB that Cage's performance was the inspiration for Bale in American Psycho (for whatever that is worth), I can see that.

Actually I am constantly trying to bring back catchphrases I used as a kid. Most of what I say is a mix of 90s hip-hop and semi cholo-ish slang; I keep it dope, fly, and firme like that all the time.

So I am late to this I know, but I just want to echo the sentiments of so many others; there is no way these aliens would ever struggle to take us over. Theyve mastered intergalactic travel, can instantly disappear into dust, and can control the body of living thing around them; and with all these powers all they have to do is drop a worm into a city's water supply to win. Yet for two decades they've failed! Lots of movies make the antagonist unbeatable and then find some cheap device to save the day (eg. kill the head vampire and all the others go back to normal). There is nothing of the sort here, its never even implied (like the way the kids got their powers). On a side note, I think they make all the friends failures and unlikable as adults to show how much the powers they have changed them and ruined their lives. As tweens who stood up for a handicapped kid they didn't know, and readily accepted an ass kicking at the hands of the biggest HS bullies, because it was the right thing to do. Not many kids would do that.

Remember how in the late 80s/ early 90s, before rap and hip-hop completely made into the main-stream, Hollywood would try to co-opt the culture into some horribly cheesy messes? This was one of them. It's Kid N Plays Prince and the Pauper movie where the stereotypical nerd switches roles with the stereotypical thug; except everything is a bit over the top. Its some hollywood exec's idea of how urban youths talked, combined with attempts at slapstick, combined with a HS coming of age movie. The main protagonist has a yuppie henchman, and Rhea Perlman plays a teacher who tries to seduce one of her students.

One of those mid/late 80s movies that was on HBO that I vaguely remember from my childhood. If I remember correctly the moment before Willy/Milly decides on what gender to be she spins a tacked up letter "M" that proceeds her name "Milly"; it ends up upside down (thus spelling Willy) and the decision is made.

Ya'll brought up if ever a batter in a brawl utilized a bat; lookup Juan Marichal and Johnny Roseboro

The Peanut Butter Solution (1985)
DeeMoney replied to hguftyfdt's topic in Bad Movie Recommendations
Its funny you brought up scary movies shown to us in school, it reminded me that Christy Swanson's parents were substitute teachers in my school district. Her dad subbed for my art class once and instead of teaching a lesson showed us Flowers in the Attic. That kinda freaked me out, I'll have to try to remember the ones that scared me when I was younger though -
Similar story here, all I remember was the robot clown

Is there a list somewhere online of "crappy movies that were on HBO in the 80s that all the Gen XYers vaguely remember"? This would be on there and I can think of a few others. -
Just saw this thing, and yes it needs its own HDTGM episode. Imagine the movie Short Circuit, but then have the robot get kidnapped by B-Rad from Malibu's Most Wanted, a somewhat slow Miley Cyrus impersonator, and what I guess is South Africa's version of a chollo. They teach the robot their mannerisms and speech patterns while trying to get it to commit crimes.

As a young kid in the 80s, this was one of those HBO reruns that I've seen 100 times. Can't wait

I recently saw this movie for the first time. I watched the first 10 minutes to see what it was all about; I watched the remaining 90 so I would get all the jokes when you reviewed it. Amazingly awful.
-
AHHH, do not talk about that video! I'm pretty sure I saw the same one, but they showed it in 7th grade- showed a direct shot of the baby being born. Not something I recommend showing 13 year olds. Then again I went to school in CA, guess it was different.
-
I don't know if its been pointed out already, but there actually is a "non-white" extra in the movie. In the sex-ed class sitting front row in a Fila sweater. Dude looks a little like Adolfo Shabba-doo Quinones. BTW, what school has sex ed in HS? Thats more like 6th grade.
-
It was crap movies like this that gave me a negative perception of Gen-X. I was born in 1980 (so one of those XYers), I remember watching this as a kid and thinking "those people in HS are idiots."
-
Damn, you've set the bar for me now. I think the only way I can top that is be the cause of a County story; time to go buy a Samurai sword.
-
I went to HS with Ralph Bracamonte, so I've kept my eye on this story. Still, there is nothing that quite compares to hearing the name of someone you know in a county story. Its an amazing experience.

Rodman interview was great; second favorite end of the show celebrity behind Wahlberg.

Someone brought up why Phoenix is so comfortable in the future while Spartan struggles to grasp things. Its because Phoenix had all this info given to him through his cryo reprogramming. This is why he can speak Spanish, is gifted in martial arts, and knows all the bank codes/codes to activate anti-graffiti prongs. Cocteau made his cryo-programming so that he would be an unstoppable killer and could take out Friendly. As it has been pointed out though, probably a bad choice.
