Listen yall, it's totally obvious that most scifi has white people as the human good guys and aliens tend to be broadly drawn & essentialized, with those traits often taken from fucked up racial/ethnic/national/cultural/etc stereotypes. For every great piece that departs from that or subverts it, there are a fuckton of others that embrace it like nbd, often without even realizing how racist it is. The same shit happens with fantasy and monster-horror. Racism is the standard. This is especially the case in the Big Money Entertainment parts of scifi that non-scifi-heads are more aware of--movies, television, and gaming. If yall are such big scifi fans you should be even angrier about this than we are and try harder to change that standard.

I'm curious, Cracky, why do you think your race was the reason you got sucker punched? Did the guy who punched you say "I'm punching you because you're white and I'm racist against white people" or are you just assuming that was his motivation? And did you alert the authorities? Did they take your claim seriously? Did the guy who punched you face consequences? Think any other black guys in the area got stopped and harassed because they "matched the description"? What did the other people in the theater do?

Went back and listened to the entire YITR episode--the woman's name is Joselyn Hughes. She started out in Chicago, trained at Second City and, somewhat ironically, UCB. She was definitely too easy on the writers (probably didn't want to condemn people in the industry she's trying to move up in) but it's not like she was so wrong about the broad American audience. Also probably worth pointing out that Andrew Ti is from Ann Arbor, Michigan. I think Besser and Walsh were just mad because it got personal for them--look at how fast Walsh mentioned his own grandfather for instance.
