This movie still remains the single best choice for HDTGM that is on this forum currently. Seriously, if you haven't seen this hunka junk, do yourself a favor. I've seen a ton of crazy ass movies -- we all have -- but I haven't spoken aloud "what the fuck" so many times in several years, probably since the very first time I saw The Room. At a certain point, Dreamcatcher is gonna need to happen.

There's a parallel in video game culture(?) right now -- actually I think all "nerd" pop culture is undergoing a radical transformation. The rise of the internet over the last couple of decades and the subsequent generation that grew up using the damn INFORMATION SUPER HIGHWAY has shined a light on how fans and fandom have traditionally considered themselves a closely knit community of whatever specific thing, when in reality there's thousands (or millions) of people who like that specific thing. Prior to the internet, if you were a superfan of Star Trek or anime or whatever, it was somewhat difficult to 1) find others that shared your interests, 2) there was sometimes a sense of shame in having a nerdy hobby, and 3) oftentimes it was hard to even access whatever nerdy shit you liked. People used to trade tapes and shit through zines, or put ads for pen pals in the backs of magazines. This is true for almost all alternative/underground/etc culture in the 1980s and 90s. People felt a sense of ownership, not quite entitlement, that grew out of genuine love and respect for this obscure thing that was incredibly important to them -- Deadheads, D&D, punk rock, early 90s rave, etc. So you take that mindset and turn on the WWW. All of a sudden you find out that there's a ton of people who are also into comic books. Remember when Comic Con wasn't a gigantic media theme park? When E3 was actually a trade show? I think many people like having the idea that they discovered something first, that it was special to them, and can't be that way for others. I definitely prickled a bit when the new Doctor Who became so popular because I was like "shit, Tom Baker and Lalla Ward have been my jam forever". Pop culture is a gigantic shared experience now -- and it actually always has been (100+ million people watched the final episode of M.A.S.H.) -- we just couldn't connect on the same level we do now. It can be disconcerting to realize that you're not a super special snowflake.

I'm only 15 minutes in, so maybe they figured it out, but the character actor Jason is thinking of is definitely Stacy Keach -- whom I also thought was the lead in this movie. Stacy Keach, Tom Atkins And yeah, Stacy Keach has been in a million things, working nonstop since the early 1970s. I hope the dramatic readings continue to be a regular feature -- June is great at these. -

^^^ Jesus, that is terrifying. -
I haven't seen this for years, and had totally thought Stacy Keach was the lead. It took me about 15 minutes of waiting for him to show up before realizing they got a different guy with a moustache.

Submit clips here!

This is a supercut I made years ago (and forgot about) from a tv documentary called Relics: Einstein's Brains, which is quite rare (hence the Swedish(?) subtitles) and has been the subject of debate regarding it's truthiness. Did you know Einstein's brain was removed within 8 hours of his death, for study at Princeton? And that it was subsequently stolen, and missing for decades? This documentary is the story of one Japanese man's search for Einstein's brain. I added the little title sequence at the beginning; the rest is just edited down from the raw footage. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C65W-jOseu8 -
Barely related: A friend of mine often uses a certain groan worthy exchange with bartenders: What'll you have to drink? I'll have a "matta baby". What's a "matta baby"? Nothing right now, but I'd like a drink.

Episode 23 — The Room: Director\'s Edition
PhillipMedoc replied to admin's topic in How Did This Get Made?
Oh hi Earwolf! You're my favorite customer. Greg Sestero's book on the making of The Room is finally out! The reviews are pretty good; I'm looking forward to adding it to my backlog. -
Have you seen the movie? It's actually a wonderful film, one of the most beautifully shot ever. The cinematography is stunning. That's what turned it into a "fiasco"; Michael Cimino was paying an entire crew to sit at sunrise and wait for the perfect shot, sometimes days at a time. It went extremely over budget and because of that got a lot of undeserved bad press prior to release, but it's not a terrible film at all. I agree with you in regard to pet projects gone awry, but I just wanted to say that -- unlike certain directors' dream films -- Heaven's Gate is actually good cinema.

It is so fucking hilarious that he got Penguin Classics to release his memoir. Someone over there must be a big fan. Well, apart from maybe The Flaming Lips, they're the biggest band that has really weird, psychedelic elements (synthesizers, tons of effects, sound collage, lots of playing around with stereo positioning, etc) and oftentimes avoids conventional verse/chorus/verse/bridge/verse/chorus structure. They're obviously not the first people to do things like this, and I would hesitate to call them "experimental" because everything is intentional, but I can't think of anyone as big as Radiohead that was doing similar things -- basically using the entire studio as an instrument (Tortoise's "Millions Now Living..." is a great example of this). Nine Inch Nails is really the only huge band I can think of in the 1990s that was doing weird stuff musically. Of course there's tons of underground shit everywhere that is crazy, but I'm talking headlining area huge. I think Radiohead's influence is being felt in a lot of current music, young musicians and producers who grew up on that music. Stuff like chillwave, lots of indie rock, even some hip-hop is pretty strange now compared to a decade ago. And prior to Radiohead, it was pretty fucking uncool to have keyboards in a rock band. Good 'ol Fat Bob. British men do tend to get the bloat as they age (and drink pints).

Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone (1983)
PhillipMedoc replied to ixnay8's topic in Bad Movie Recommendations
I saw this in 3D at a film festival years ago. The 3D seemed weird and off, like the depth of field was reversed. People were grumbling and I started getting a headache. Finally about 30 minutes in, someone yelled out "Put your glasses on backwards!" and it worked. Apparently the projectionist had put the anaglyph filter in the wrong way. Fun, dumb space movie. And yeah, Molly Ringwald's character is super annoying and whiny throughout. -
I don't know what you're talking about, he always makes complete sense to me. Radiohead for me is like the Beatles; I have never owned an album and never actively sought them out because everyone else around is listening to them or they're on some radio/karaoke/whatever. I'm not super into Radiohead; their arc is kind of like Pink Floyd: basic kinda weird rock to concept freak psych rock to formula. I dig that they've brought some interesting elements into popular music, though.

How about " "? That scream at the end always used to get me. I've long moved on, but they had a really great run in the 1980s. Robert Smith is one of the best pop song writers of all time; "Just Like Heaven" is about as perfect of a pop song as you can have. On the subject of crazy ass TV interviews that would never happen in our modern age: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bM_Pf7JhKWo

Paul Scheer mentioned Vampire's Kiss on today's Who Charted, Howard Kremer said "oooh, I'd love to do that", Paul said they'd have him on. So maybe there's hope! It'd be a great HDTGM.

TWO new PFT inspired shirts now in the Earwolf Store!
PhillipMedoc replied to Shannon's topic in Comedy Bang Bang
E, for Earwerewolf, which is what this podcast network unfortunately turns into every full moon; buy a KNIFEGRAB shirt today! Every purchase helps support comedy podcast lycanthropy research. -
Different boats for different goats, although I'm not sure you need to put "that" out there; just maybe move along, these are not the droids you're looking for. Personally, I wasn't aware of him until his recent couple of podcasts, listened to his You Made It Weird, and just bought tickets to his Portland show. I really dug this particular CBB ep.

I am dying to know what spoOoOoky film got chosen. I really do hope Halloween 3 or Friday The 13th 8 gets chosen; Troll 2 has been done to death by pretty much everyone else, but even that would be better than Hollow Man.

How can we improve the Earwolf.com forums?

How can we improve the Earwolf.com forums?
PhillipMedoc replied to andreslucero's topic in General Earwolf
I'm happy that the mouseover link to the "Shows" on the toolbar works on all pages now. I was having the same issue as Bruce with the likes reloading the page, but it's fixed now. Also, thanks for adding the full episode list for quicker access to older eps -- don't think I saw that yesterday. I'm still not a big fan of only seeing two at a time, but I suppose it's visually less clunky than page numbers. Overall the site is functional and pretty easy to navigate. One suggestion I would add: would it be possible to ensure that when text is pasted into a forum post, it's done so without any formatting? Whenever people copy and paste from another site, it (usually) keeps the font and style, like so: "Stop eating my Sesame cake!". It would had been funny to see him blow his brains out, Mr. Hormonka or w/e his name is. "Motherfulka didn't I tell you to Stop Eating my Sesame Cake???". I see this happen a lot in the HDTGM forum. I'm not a web dev, just wondering if it's doable. -
YOU GODDAMN RACIST PIECE OF SHIT. Nah, for reals though, I swear I've heard Kulap briefly mention that possibility once or twice on Who Charted. And people are definitely clamoring for it after Kroll's recent Stallone on CBB. It's probably a time/getting people together thing; I'd say it'll probably happen at some point. p.s. what the heck is up with the forums? it's looking crazy in Chrome right now.</p>

Episode 58 — Mystical Sex
PhillipMedoc replied to JulyDiaz's topic in The Fogelnest Files with Jake Fogelnest
You're kidding but I lived in Olympia, Washington at the time, and that was my first "major" earthquake -- pretty terrifying stuff, really, although I know Californians will scoff at that. It shut down the beloved Olympia Film Society for over a year. My boss (I was at work) had a heart attack during it. Crazy seeing sidewalks doing a sine wave.
