Whooch LIVE on VPN - 9/19

I actually got a question in, and I didn't think it would get picked because it wasn't "funny" or a callback to anything. But it ended up being pretty good. Yesterday I was listening to the last Harmontown episode with Kumail Nanjiani in which they talked about emotional shit in an awesome way, so that was on my mind. (It's possibly worth your time.)

    Episode 71.5 — Minisode 71.5

Watched it last night but fell asleep about 40 minutes in. I do have to say that the art direction is really just stunning; sets, costumes, lighting, everything. Joan Cusack is an absolute delight. LL Cool J has charisma and his character is really likable. Robin Williams is a little Robin Williamsy at times, but it didn't go over the top as far as I got. I think I like it, but I'll have to finish it later this weekend.

    Favorite Character Name

I said it in the Vampire In Brooklyn thread, but Angela Bassett's partner in that movie is named Detective Justice.

    Miami Connection (1987)

If I had more time, I'd replace your phone with a guitar. That's a Hall & Oates original, by the way.

seanotron, please PM me your email so I can send you a gluten-free burrito. I'm out of likes. I'm out. I'm exhausted. I still have to watch Toys tonight. This was a really fun VPN.

Hung out in the yootoob chat for this one, it was kinda fun although distracting. I will rewatch this when it's reposted. Three of my fave Earwolf peeps in one room, total diamond gold platinum.

  9. But I like horror & disaster movies, and I fucking hated Aftershock (avoid that at all costs, by the way) so I give it one star. Now Netflix doesn't think I like stupid gore flicks. The system is flawed. Didn't you say you were about to get a job involving them in some capacity? What's that like? Or do you have an NDA?

    Electric Dreams (1984)

I just loved back in the days when people believed computers were basically magic. So many movies operated under the premise that a computer was totally capable of doing something it absolutely is not able to do.

    Episode 71.5 — Minisode 71.5

Yeah, Fisher King was great and is now kinda underappreciated, in my opinion. I think Gilliam still has another good movie in him, trying to get out. I feel like Robin Williams is a terrible comic actor but who can do well in dramatic roles with the right director (Fisher King, Good Will Hunting, Dead Poets Society). For a really stunning example of this, check out . I think many comedians in films need tight reins, especially manic people like Williams. He has been in some terrible shlock, though. Bicentennial Man, Jack, Patch Adams (ugh ugh blech), etc. I don't think Toys is quite there yet.

Episode 146 — Keep It Clean

The freestyle music charts have been amazing, and even though I've been listening how a while, I still can't believe Kremer dropped that line about a mop. JESUS, Howard. I really love his warm ups to them; last week's was hilarious. "Riddick is a movie... about a meat head on a planet."

    Innerspace

Yeah, I was going to say the same thing but thought I'd just let this thread fall downstream silently. This movie was totally in my wheelhouse as a 9 year old. Dennis Quaid was in another 80s favorite of mine as a kid, . I loved pretty much any sci-fi movie with bizarre technology or weird powers.

Episode 146 — Keep It Clean

Yes and yes, like you said upthread, tons of "producers" just hit play on their laptop and pretend. I remember seeing pictures of Perry Farrell deejaying and he was being handed records with cue markers on them, and the same dude was working the mixer. Paris Hilton did a couple of gigs where she just danced in the booth with headphones on while another person played tracks. It's a sad, weird state of affairs. Diplo is the shit and deserves to get paid, but a dude like Skrillex (or whatever that girl from Rosanne's name is) gets CRAZY money to just drop his own records, wiggle around a bit, and not much else.

Episode 146 — Keep It Clean

Yeah, that's what bums me out. We went from chill summer jams (say, around 2006-ish) to all mainstream R&B/pop sounding like rave shit from 15 years ago. I can't listen to the "urban" station here anymore cuz it sucks.

Episode 146 — Keep It Clean

Humblebrag time! I was at Decibel fest one year, and the night I played I was literally the only performer who wasn't using a laptop. I have a rack of analog gear with a drum machine and a Boss SP-303 velcroed to the top, all being driven by a Roland MC-50 (which uses 3.5" floppy disks!), and I play a Juno 60 and an MS2000. People were looking at me like I was a fucking necromancer or something. Looking out at the audience, it was all glowing Apple logos. I know how to use Reason, Logic, etc, but I need physical knobs and keys; it just ain't the same. But yeah, like you said, with some basic knowledge you can just churn out a bunch of generic dance music very easily. And then during mastering they just compress it to hell and it sounds like shit.

    Episode 71.5 — Minisode 71.5

You just blew my mind; this is like the time you said Soccermom co-wrote Shark Tale. You are probably on point. I'm still holding a candle for Ladies Love Cool James, though. I was a kid so I didn't know then, but it's interesting how much Magritte they cribbed for this movie.

Episode 146 — Keep It Clean

She's amazing on How Did This Get Made; quite the counterpart to the manic energy that is Jason Mantzoukas. via EarBear I'm on the caffeine train but I'll never get smokers. The dudes outside my office spend at least 30 minutes on the clock enjoying their morning cigarette. 'Sgusting. I only get bubbleguts if I don't eat breakfast. Hah, Kremer and his Polynesian Love. "Have you buried a pig in the sand?"

Yeah, that dude sucks. I'm glad Brian Wilson was able to get it together and have The Smile Sessions out finally, it's wonderful music.

    Episode 71.5 — Minisode 71.5

You and Lando! Have a bourbon/ginger on me. Looking at IMDB and The Oracle Of Bacon, I think there's a 50% chance of LL Cool J being on the show. Paul did say it was a "he", so there's that. Also Cool J acts in a show called NCIS (which I assume is a procedural crime drama) so maybe there's a love connection with NTSF:SD:SUV:: there? Dunno.

Just gotta chime in and say this was. fucking. AWESOME. I just enjoyed listening to Bamford cracking up. And that plugs theme DID totally rule. Props to everyone.

    Disorderlies (1987)

It's pretty bad, worse than the Twist. It's a shame because they're probably mostly remembered for those songs instead of their other music. I know they had a family friendly thing going on, but their first album was a bona fide classic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7nzf1yz7_g
