  1. Man, did it make my day when I checked my podcast app a little while ago and saw TWO new Nerd Poker episodes waiting for me.

So glad to have ya'll back. Dan, I'm glad you're feeling better.

    Thanks guys!

  2. This was the only movie I ever gave a 1 star rating on Netflix. This was not a documentary, this was a hatchet job. While ostensibly being about DMs, the real focus of the film was showing the private turmoil of a handful of cherry-picked people, all of whom happened to be dysfunctional or damaged in some way, and attempted to portray their gaming hobby as a sad respite from, or cause of, their miserable lives.

I feel really sorry for the subjects of this "documentary." I have to suspect they were conned or hoodwinked by the producers. Perhaps they thought they would be showcasing their DM skills and love for the game and were rudely surprised when they saw the final product. I can't know for sure. But this film is in no way representative of everyone who plays D&D and basically amounts to a high-brow swirlie on geek culture.

The people who made this film ought to be ashamed of themselves.

  3. Also, if you're hungry for more Call of Cthulhu action, there's Miskatonic University Podcast, where they play the original Chaosium rules. They go over sort of the whole RP experience, from character creation, to GM tips, and then Actual Play. Personally, it's not my cup of tea but they gave my podcast a shoutout, and I figure I should return the favor. They're at mu-podcast.com

I like CoC actual play because story typically flows a lot more smoothly in that game as compared to DnD, which can stall for the listener if something like extended combat takes place.

A very good MU Actual Play to listen to is the Ilsley Variant, especially if you're new to the game and want to get an introduction to character generation and and example of how to play, run, and pace a CoC game. The Masks of Nyarlathotep campaign they got running now is fun too, although a little more gonzo than Ilsley is.

  4. I don't know that the show has a lack of direction. To me it just sounds like Blaine hasn't really planned too much and is doing a lot of winging it and improvising, which I can recognize because I ran my games the same way back in the day.

But keep in mind that you got a group of very busy professionals, juggling stand-up, TV shows, promo gigs, new babies, family, etc and I would imagine that this (free) podcast is lower on the priority list than many other things, so planning a game might get pushed to the back burner. Which is totally understandable.

That said, I've always liked listening to the crew bullshit, joke among themselves, and talk about random stuff as much as I liked the story, even when Sark was running it. But that's just me.

I do miss Blaine's "brought-to-you-bys" though. He doesn't seem to do as many of them since taking over the DM role.
