More of a mutual thing. As a friend's dad once put it: "We both put a premium on education" -
Jason may (or may not!) want to see this.

What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Nell, and Forrest Gump all came out within a year of each other. Not exactly a great time for Hollywood.

Always recalls this great cold open from ~25 years ago now. (The key line is 2:23 in). -

Keeping in the musical theme, that drummer guy reminds me a little of Pulp-era Jarvis Cocker. -
My sleeper pick is "No Holds Barred". Tom Lennon was pretty great, plus lots of Hulk Hogan impersonations and an extended tangent about the Hogan sex tape.

I might be following this tangent a little too far, but as we've discussed the presence of (and dependence on) uncredited extras in this movie pretty extensively by this point. So this seems normal enough: We've established that the international computer programming contest (ICPC) is a real thing that has been occurring continuously since the early 1970s. UCF in fact finished 4th in that contest in 1986, just before the filming of this movie (Cal Tech finished first, followed by Rice and RIT, just as written on the chalkboard). So it stands to reason that the professor in that scene is an actual CS professor at UCF. And indeed, the actor credited as professor #1 is John Leeson. It appears that Leeson retired a few years ago, but he was a professor at UCF and still has a ratemyprofessor page. If that's not convincing enough, there's this from another website's review: So, with all that established, this was an actual class, right? Did Y.K. Kim have that much pull that he could barge in on classes at a major university and film impromptu scenes without clearances? Pretty impressive if so. -

I spent far too much time looking this up. UCF finished 4th (out of 24 teams) in 1986. You can even look at the problem set the teams had to solve here. For what it's worth, the programming languages at the contest were Pascal and Fortran. -

At the beginning of Jane's computer programming class, the instructor congratulates the class on finishing third in the international computer programming contest. This is a real thing! The ICPC has existed since at least the seventies (the actual UCF finished in 15th in last year's contest). Anyways, finishing third at ICPC is a pretty impressive achievement for a class that still needs the directions for starting up BASIC from the MS-DOS shell written on the chalkboard. Also, BASIC? Really? -

Paul is not a ruler by divine right, like Louis XIV. He's an elected monarch, like the Holy Roman Emperor (who was neither Holy nor Roman).

Jon Hamm is sad that he hasn't received mention in this thread. -
Clearly, the correct answer is:

In all fairness, though, Eiffel 65 was just a gimmick group. You could draw from a whole pile of analogous Eurodance groups from the 1994-1998 era that you mentioned including Rednex and Aqua. You mention Lou Bega, I'll raise you Los Del Rio.
