I'm surprised no one else mentioned this continuity error that the gang skirted around but didn't quite address: when Fireball is pursuing Richards and Amber down that utility hallway, Richards throws some plastic drums at him to slow down the pursuit. With the help of some comically cheesy editing, we see that this slows Fireball some marginal amount while disrupting his aim with the flame thrower. Richards then kicks over a barrel of gasoline which Fireball ignites, for cool dramatic effect but essentially nothing else. All of this works to create a minor distraction, allowing Amber to escape. Since Fireball cannot possibly be more than 20 feet away from Richards, this sets up an obvious hand-to-hand face off between the two. What happens instead is that Richards steps out from behind his hiding place, looks around for a few seconds, picks up a flare, and chases after Amber in the wrong direction. Cut to the scene where Fireball traps Amber in the dead guys' locker room. Richards ambushes Fireball, issues the one-liner, and kills hm. The gang mentioned the impossibility of someone built like Arnold Schwarzenegger hiding up in the rafters, a salient observation. But how did he get there in the first place? He ran off in the wrong direction. And Fireball was only a few feet behind him! He would have at least needed a fair amount of time to hide himself up there, something that his distraction wouldn't have bought him. Setting that aside, why didn't Fireball kill Richards when he stepped into the open directly in front of him? It's not like Richards even made an attempt to hide or protect himself.

I was thinking the same thing. The only way this works out is if bettors have already lost tons of money -- millions perhaps -- on their Stalker bets. Even so, these are shitty bookies. When a lot of people are putting money down on a guy BEFORE you even set the odds, you should make the odds a little closer to even.

This viewing was the first time that I caught Richard Dawson referring to Fireball "rushing to battle" or something like that. Obvious play on Fireball as a young man:

Did anyone notice that the attack helicopter in the opening scene travels approximately 1000 miles in the span of a minute or two? When the scene opens, the helicopter is at approximately 30˚ N, 119˚ W, which is near Guadalupe Island in Baja, California. When they attack Bakersfield, the helicopter is at approximately 45˚ N, 119˚ W, which is somewhere in eastern Oregon. So setting aside the massive improvements in helicopter technology in the Running Man universe, California has somehow annexed Oregon and Bakersfield has been moved several hundred miles north.

I still don't understand what the hell happened in the Jesse Ventura death scene.

Absolutely -- that was a horrendous fan service moment that presaged an abominable trend in blockbusters to come. Another thing that bugged me about Return of the King is the deus ex machina* that defines the end of the story. *Tolkien disputed this assertion but it's basically what happens, however you describe it.

This is why I loved Da Ali G show, but didn't care as much for the movies that came from it. Comedy suffers a little from saturation. I still find plenty to laugh at on TV and movies, but I was only going to laugh at (to use an example) American Pie* once. It helped that I was a teenager then, too. *including sequels and similar movies like Road Trip, etc.

Baron Munchausen is my pick. I've never seen John Carter, but I love Chabon as a writer. There's a lot of process between script and screen, though.

Just looking at the trailers and reading some review articles, it looks like they learned all the wrong lessons from Game of Thrones.

Common ancestor between mice and rats occurred ~20 million years ago, so... maybe? This movie came out almost the exact time that Art Spiegelman's Maus came out. Both are stories about Jews fleeing persecution. In both cases, cats are the persecutors (here they are cossacks, in Maus they are Nazis). And of course, mice are the protagonists. Spiegelman actually sued on grounds of plagiarism (but did not win and/or dropped the suit). I guess what I'm saying is, if Fievel has a cousin, it's Maus.

That double breasted blue blazer, replete with gold buttons, is almost assuredly made out of wool. Pretty conservative choice for a self-styled ladies man, especially given how he decked out his home.
