One of the things that I love about this episode, is that this is the first episode I've mixed where everything the guest says is presented in the order it was said. There are no time jumps with the guest, other than to skip something and jump forward.

He's a small Dachsun (?) - he was a rescue so I don't think anyone knows for sure. I promise you he is sitting on my lap in that picture! The SXSW show is going to be Sunday 3/15 - I don't have a specific time of venue yet...

Okay... here is a nugget: Horatio got Lucy Liu and Jane Krakowski to roll with him in the limo to the Plaza. Again... legend... and I just figured out I can shrink a picture using "paint".....

Good Morning! I delivered episode 6 to Earwolf at about 1:15 am pacific time last night. They were all good sports about it and July must have also been awake still because the episode was up about 30 minutes later. So thanks guys! Time for some Wednesday morning inside baseball for Rock of Agee, and of course I will be happy to answer questions. I highly recommend listening to the episode before you read further. Possible Spoilers.... This episode was actually "done" last Thursday and then two things happened. Earwolf let us know that we would have a sponsor read this week so I just figured, that's cool, we'll roll it on Tuesday when Horatio gets back from SNL and I'll throw it in the episode, no biggie. Then on Monday I got the text "I got high with Keith Richards!" Monday night I watched Jimmy and Seth tell their SNL 40 stories and thought to myself that there was no way I was going to NOT get a couple of stories into this episode, especially knowing what I knew. Rog got back at about 6:00pm last night and we started rolling tape at about 7:00pm. He wound up talking about Sunday night for well over an hour. So many great stories, and many we simply CANNOT share. Sorry for the tease, but I say that to let you know how excruciatingly difficult it was to try to edit that conversation down into a single usable segment. Then, as a result I had to make a few less difficult decisions as to what to cut out of the show, because with the ad roll and the SNL story, it was feeling long. A few phone calls hit the cutting room floor and a segment where me and Rog and Agee talked about other people's podcasts also got cut. As a result, I feel like the Rock and Roll theme of the show found itself. The KR story is legend and tied the whole thing together. One quick inside story for some background: Horatio says that they were hanging out in Daryl's dressing room. He is of course referring to Daryl Hammond who has never really left the show and has now taken over for Don Pardo, RIP. I got to hang out in Daryl's dressing room back in 2002. His room is the one everyone hangs out in, including the Conan writers at the time because it was the biggest. The reason he got the biggest dressing room though isn't because he was a bigger star or more important or anything like that, it was very simple, he needed the space. His dressing room is filled with videotapes of every movie, tv show, news program you name it. He uses the tapes to develop his brilliant imitations. When I was there in 2002, it was for the Al Gore / Phish episode and if you recall, there was a Robert Smigel cartoon in that episode of the Peanuts devolving into a Christmas Dionysian orgy narrated by Brad Pitt. SNL had been trying desperately all day to get Brad Pitt via an ISDN line to record the voiceover but they just couldn't find him. At about 5 o'clock on Saturday, they just decided that Daryl would just imitate Pitt and do the VO in house. So Daryl comes into his dressing room, and there were about 6-8 of us sitting in there, and he finds a videotape of "The Mexican" and puts it on. He fast forwards until he finds a line he likes and then plays it, imitates it, rewinds it, repeat, about 5 times and all of a sudden he IS Brad Pitt. It was one of the coolest things to watch. That's MY Daryl Hammond story! There are two details about this episode that I really love. First the name. Not because it is any kind of clever pun (although it is!), but mostly because when we came up with the title I didn't realize that the first words out of Agee's mouth were "I wish my name lent itself to a cool title like that!" - in fact, I didn't realize until after I was finally listening to the master and writing up the description of the episode and I just love that detail. The second is for the participants in this forum. In the last thread, we were talking about the radio static effect and I wrote that longer post about how I was trying to get away from it whenever possible. About an hour after I wrote that, I was editing in the Steely Dan song FM underneath the Coachella conversation. I honestly just picked an arbitrary part of the song to fade up on and figured I would just crossfade into the next bit.... but right when Steve stops talking the lyrics went to "No Static at ALL (no static at ALL)" and I couldn't resist and I was laughing my ass off. That one's for you guys. Hope you enjoyed this weeks show. I'll be popping back in from time to time. To answer the question about music guests: David Bazan will be appearing on a future episode and SXSW will definitely have a musical theme to it, which is all I can say.... Peace!

new episode... new forum... see you there!

Try riding in a car with Horatio... I'm in a full body cast right now.... We need to get you one of those big foam #1 fingers except it's the middle finger instead of the index figure, that way when you're flipping people off, it's more fun! Hooray!

One of my favorite metrics when looking at this show, is how many downloads we have by 7 am on Wednesday. That tells me who the subscribers are and how many people are getting the show delivered straight to their phones. I am pleased to announce that that number nearly tripled between last week and this week.

I had no idea that picture was online or that she took that. And the comments on instagram creep me out. They actually reinforce exactly what she talks about on her episode.... creepsville

and can any moderators tell me why I can't upload a picture? Every time I try it says "failed to set new picture"

p.s. - Milana is a sweetheart and a really good person and the interview is probably one of the most fascinating we've done. She is also the first person that warmed up before the taping by doing handstands in the front yard, falling down, and then saying that she was glad she fell because it felt good.

Here's what's crazy to me, especially about this episode. Before we got the Brian interview yesterday, the episode was coming in at a weak sauce 35 minutes and it felt LONG! Once I added the Brian interview, the episode became 44 minutes and suddenly felt short. It really is about the flow of a show. I regret to inform you that we will probably always edit on the side of leaving you wanting more... the economy of comedy if you will. I agree with you wholeheartedly about Earwolf. They have been amazeballs to work with and we are just getting started. Earwolf had originally requested something completely different and Horatio pitched this show to them with me as a producer and they had the faith and trust to say... "okay! go for it!" HOORAY!!!!

I was waiting for the... I AINT!!! lol. Awesome post. Thank you so very very much.

Thanks bud! I use Pro Tools 11. Mostly because when we set up the studio, I asked for it because that was the platform I was most comfortable in and that I knew I could work with relatively quickly. Old dog, new tricks etc... The transitions in this episode are owed a lot to the film's great choice of music. All the music is from the movie except for our opening and closing themes, and I added "Emotional Rescue" (a little nail on the head, I know, but fuck it) and the guided by voices song in and out of Brian's interview, because he is a GBV fan.

Someone mangled my name the other day too. I was like "how do you get 'you fucking dickbag' out of Chad?!" they're not even close!

I am thinking back and I may have Brian Williamsed the count on Phish shows... maybe not quite 50... I've never counted but that number doesn't seem right. Maybe? Now I have to count dammit! Horatio broke all of his fingers in the car accident, so I don't think he will be typing in the forum for a while. He can only handle 140 characters at a time.

After the premier, NO ONE recognized the star of the movie walking amongst them... That is my subtle dig at Rog. He is not a good driver. We actually fought about it in the car. He laughed his ass off when I played it for him. I haven't honestly listend to analyze Phish yet, which is stupid because I am a huge Phish fan (50+ shows) and it's Earwolf family. I know what I'm listening to this afternoon, and if you guys are reading this and want to have me on the show.... let's do this. If you listen closely, there is a guy saying "Say what????" - he recognized Horatio and got freaked out.... His mom has a good sense of humor about it....

We took a swing at a live recording when we did the show at UCB Sunset. I have the footage and we learned a lot from it. One thing I learned is that comedy in front of an audience doesn't necessarily translate to a good audio show. We are going to go into the SXSW show much more prepared. We tried to do more in front of the live audience at UCB including opening with a song and doing a visual bit satirizing ISIL beheading videos and when you listen back to the audio, if you remove yourself from it, you are like "what the fuck is going on?!" So it's going to be a fine line with what we can and cannot do at SXSW. That being said, we are swinging big for our guests, so stay tuned.

Good morning everyone! Welcome to this edition of the Hooray Show recap show where producer, me, talks about the making of the episode and takes questions.... ok... I'm just trying this out... don't know if it's gonna be a thing... I'm just exhausted from editing this episode and not quite ready to move on to the next one yet so I'm just typing words.... If you haven't listened to the episode yet, you may want to do that first. I'm not sure there are going to be any "spoilers" per se, but who knows? Before I get to that, two forum things. First Shannon, I absolutely love that two of the biggest fans of our show are you and Adam CEO Sachs. We feel the love over here for sure! See you at SXSW? Second, OddBall..... this is the second time you've pranksta'd me and I hate you for it. When the first comment I read was "this has reached a new low" my heart fucking dropped through the basement floor into hell. So fuck you and fuck your comments! #iAint So here is the inside baseball recap. First of all, it seems like the baseball allegory is sticking with the show. Which I kind of dig. Or maybe it's just a Kevin Dorff thing. We'll see. But enough about baseball. We recorded the Brian Huskey interview last night and I delivered the final edit of the episode to Earwolf at about 7:30 PST. This is the first episode we have done that was put together from start to finish in the course of only two weeks. As I was listening to my first cut of the show yesterday morning, it just felt wrong. I have hours and hours of footage from the bar and then the after-after party at the Montecito house but it was all really unusable. The content was there, but the background noise is only tolerable to your ear for so long. Brian was kind enough to take an hour or two (and I have plenty of content from that as well that didn't make the show) to stop by and complete the episode. That's the thing about this show, and their movie, we work and play with REALLY COOL PEOPLE! Shannon, you had said that you felt like you were hanging out with the coolest people... that is EXACTLY what we want this show to be. Come hang out with us.... we're having fun and you're welcome to join. As the dude that has complete control over the timing and pace of the show, and deciding what music goes where and when, I have to tell you that my favorite part of this show is when "Pour Some Sugar On Me" kicks in on the jukebox at Dargons right when Horatio asks about Jon Benet fest. That is not edited in anyway I swear. I really wish you could have seen the smile on my face when that little comedic moment happened on accident. You might be even able to hear me jumping up and down in joy while holding the microphone. The remote audio was recorded on a Zoom HN4. That thing is pretty badass. I learned a lot about it in the process and it will definitely be feature more in upcoming episodes. Did I mention we're going to SXSW? That's all I got for now... I will now open the forum up to questions if you have any. I'm going to sit here until about noon before I start working on the next episode... which I'm not quite sure what it's going to be. I have a few choices.... hmmm...

Good to hear! I'll give you a little inside baseball around that radio effect. I may have explained it in a previous thread, but I'll repeat it here and add to it. When we first started talking about doing a podcast, we sat down on a Saturday and wrote the Ebola Soup bit from episode one as our first sketch. It was funny and it made us laugh. When I sat down to turn it into a production piece (adding the music, the sound of it being on a record, the 1950's EQ etc...) I added that radio scan to get us in and out of it so we could send it off as a stand alone piece. Our next idea for episode one (the pilot) was to frame the whole thing in a War of the Worlds bit. We were going to do a running joke that we were stuck in the basement because we thought the world was coming to an end because we fired up this old radio and blah blah blah.... It doesn't matter. But what does matter is that the radio tuning effect as well as the top and bottom of the show (Orson Welles) made it onto the final cut because it began to serve a purpose for that episode. Now cut to episode 2. My intention was to not use the radio effect at all. It was an episode one thing and I didn't want to use it anymore. I don't think it is a very creative or original way to edit an audio show. The original edit of episode 2 didn't have one single radio effect in it. And something didn't work... The show suddenly became MORE confusing without that hard edit at times. So I put a few back in there sparingly when I thought the show needed a reset or a quick shift. I then thought about using a different effect. In the end though, our concept behind this show is to throw back to the days of groups of friends, gathering around the radio to listen to their favorite show. By the way, the proper way to listen to this show is with friends, in a dark room, on a kickass stereo and do what you gotta do. As the shows go on, you will notice that effect being used less and less, although I suspect it will always be the first thing you hear on every episode. I empathize with you that a Dennis Leary album can haunt you 14 years later and I hope the Hooray Show can serve as some sort of replacement therapy for your traumatic experience. I also find it hilarious that I may have unintentionally ripped off Dennis Leary, a guy who by all accounts, ripped off more comics then anyone in the history of comedy. I'm glad you stuck around and enjoy the show (and subscribe!). Our little show is starting to pick up some traction and your feedback in this early stage means a lot! Chad

Episode 3 - The First Ever Very Special Secular February Christmas Episode
ChadKrueger replied to JulyDiaz's topic in The Hooray Show with Horatio
RIght on. As we continue to birth this baby, we continue to find ways to generate heavy content. I have probably another 40-50 minutes of footage with Ben that we didn't use. We really are just feeling it out at this point. I have a feeling every episode is going to be very different in rhythm, pace and length in this infancy and maybe that's a good thing. We'll see. I also think that when we add sponsor reads, it will dictate the pacing of the show and even things out. Keep the 2 cents coming! C -
