Suggestion: Scenes from a Marriage (1973)

I wonder if we're due for a Bergman film? Scenes From a Marriage isn't as obvious a choice for the Canon as "The Seventh Seal", "The Magician", or "Wild Strawberries" but that's in many ways a big part of its appeal for me. It's a pretty brutal and unsparing film, unsurprising given the director, yet somehow optimistic. I don't know if any other filmmaker has struck this particular balance as well as Bergman could.

 

Now this is kind of an iffy nomination based on the fact that it's actually a miniseries, not a movie. However, I think we can get past this technicality because a truncated theatrical version was produced later (and won a Golden Globe).
