Rappin' (1985)

Hip Hop has been an immensely lucrative industry for over 20 years and musicals always seem to make their way into popular culture every so often. Why haven’t there been more rap based musicals? Rappin’ That’s why dammit. Here is a quick summary of the 1985 film:

 

Story - An ex-con and break-dancer helps save a neighborhood from a greedy developer while trying to win a rap contest.

 

Cast - Mario Van Peebles ... John Hood (his mc name is rappin hood)

Eriq La Salle ... Ice

Melvin Plowden ... Fats

Richie Abanes ... Richie

Kadeem Hardison ... Moon

Ice T makes an appearance as well

 

Notable scenes (just the tip of iceberg) –

Insane solid gold style gang dance off between Puerto Rican John Travolta and Michael Jackson right as he was turning zombie in Thriller fuelled by a cocaine powered love song

 

Two words: Snack Attack

 

Junk Yard kids do a New Edition type song called golly gee honey

 

Two more words:Country Rap

 

I 100% assure you that you will never forget this movie that destroyed an entire subgenre of film.

 

Also, Mario Van Peebles will eye fuck the shit out of you for most of the movie. Ice T is the tag line voice-over saying: "Rappin, this movie had to happen!"
