I meant to pick award winners from the 100 AFI movies we just finished, but this is an interesting thread too!

Musical Mondays Week 97 Preview (Cinco DeNio's pick?)
AlmostAGhost replied to Cinco DeNio's topic in How Did This Get Made?
https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/1776 justwatch is the site i use but within Pluto, if you go to the 'musicals' listing and then to the end and see 'all musicals' that's the best way to go, I think. there's not so many movies on there, so the 'all' listings for each genre are easy to scroll through -

AlmostAGhost replied to Cinco DeNio's topic in How Did This Get Made?
It is also available for free on the Pluto TV app (they do have ads on there tho) -
Oh also, if anyone wants... I thought it would be interesting to hear your picks from these 100 movies for Best Picture Best Director Best Actor Best Actress Best Supporting Actor Best Supporting Actress Best Screenplay (and if you want to do Razzie versions too, feel free!)

These were my top-10 2001 Modern Times Lord of the Rings Vertigo Do The Right Thing The Silence of the Lambs The Wizard of Oz Double Indemnity Duck Soup Intolerance I'll add that I ended up rating 20 of the 100 as five stars on Letterboxd; with 15 more at 4.5. and my bottom-10 The Searchers Annie Hall The Wild Bunch The Graduate The Deer Hunter Saving Private Ryan Tootsie MASH Yankee Doodle Dandy Forrest Gump

Oh ya, I honestly don't expect the AFI to update again. Can you imagine if they did, and it was again like 92 white men movies? Better to just not go there.
-
I still think my point stands: one needs to look past the awards to find more a diverse list of greatness. The one black directed film and the one sci-fi on the list? That proves what you can find if you look further.
-
I think it is possible with American movies, but you would have to stop requiring the films to have won awards. I think AFI should adjust and the rule should just be "award-nominated," if not just strike it completely. Then you can get your top-100 list filled with Killer of Sheep and John Waters and I'm sure other Poitier films are great and comedies and heck, even Shaft could be considered. You could get a diverse, representative list if the Oscars didn't exist!

I'll make more of a list later in the week of things I think could be on there too, but to answer I'd say Moonlight and 12 Years A Slave would be shoo-ins for a new list. Could Spike Lee have another one? Not sure which of his others I'd raise that high though. Boyz In The Hood. Lady Bird maybe too. I'd be pro-Clueless and a modern rom-com or two directed by a woman (unsure which I'd pick right now). There's lots of ideas for this, I think, it wouldn't be hard. (Maybe not if you're bound to the 'must have won Oscars' rule though.)

I'm still finalizing my top-100, and want to re-watch 3-4 of the movies this week, but I will say, all along I've had a film that was sort of the demarcation point of "stays on the list / off the list" that helped me keep my list in order. Looking at it now, I've got 51 films above that point. So cutting it to 50 is fairly easy for me, lol

Episode 243.5 - Prequel to Episode 244

You're in for a treat. Review is one of the darkest, laugh-out-loud funniest, most sublime shows in existence. Jason is in it a little too (as are a lot of Earwolf favorites). It's unbelievable. I read a thing once about it being the comedic version of like all those anti-hero shows, like Breaking Bad, etc. -
Yea, and since they came out at the same time basically as Butch, they compare well to each other.
-
I've been grouping it with Westerns in my head, and there's A LOT on this list. I think, easily, too many. High Noon, Butch Cassidy, Wild Bunch, Unforgiven, Searchers, Shane. I don't know if Easy Rider, Bonnie & Clyde and Midnight Cowboy are quite actually Westerns, but they're close enough. This is almost 10% of the list! And there's good ones not on here, like Stagecoach or Red River or whatnot. So yea like @sycasey 2.0, Butch is probably my favorite of all of these (I like High Noon too). But I almost think most of these others should be on the list ahead of it, even those I don't like. So it's in a weird place in my head right now. I'm not sure exactly where I sit with it in regards to this list.

I hadn't heard about that at all. Let's just say I'm reclaiming it back!
-
Oh, that was just me referencing the greatest sequel of all-time, not official. Didn't know it was a bad word now, sorry all

Unspooled 2 will be starting on August 20. There will also be an Unspooled Game Show at some point. The brand is taking off!

Musical Mondays Week 96 Preview (Quasar Sniffer’s Pick)
AlmostAGhost replied to Cinco DeNio's topic in How Did This Get Made?
It's on Netflix btw! -
I think I agree with that, though I side with Paul & Amy with Jurassic Park over Jaws. JP, SL and Raiders would be my choices. Close Encounters is my favorite Spielberg probably, though, but I don't think it should be on the list over the others.

Episode 243 - The Peanut Butter Solution
AlmostAGhost replied to Wil Dride's topic in How Did This Get Made?
This kid goes bald and freaks out. He tries a wig and freaks about that too. Why didn't he just borrow a hat from Connie? He clearly has a never-ending supply. Problem solved, movie over, all of our time saved. -
Musical Mondays Week 95 The Wiz

Wheelers! I couldn't remember the name for them. I read the Baum books in like 1988 or so, so I don't remember many details but images of wheeled monkeys stuck. -

That's what Musical Mondays and Unspooled Thursdays and HDTGM Fridays are for. Otherwise, I'd have no clue either. -
Musical Mondays Week 95 The Wiz

I loved this, it was very entertaining! The music is awesome. Some of the sets and things maybe lean too weird-as-fuck, but I don't mind that at all. I'm so glad I watched this! Hm one of the main critiques of the original is the whole is message is "there's no place like home" which makes little sense after visiting a magical wonderland like Oz. Here, it makes a bit more sense because Dorothy is such a homebody introvert. But that said, Diana Ross isn't very good in this; she's the weak point in this movie if you ask me. Which sucks because out of everyone in the film, she's the one I'm a big fan of. She doesn't get the arc or motivation across well. -
Episode 242.5 - Prequel to Episode 243
AlmostAGhost replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
Oh ya I'm planning to, my nieces filled me in on it all! I'm still in the season 1, just 20 eps in, so I have a ways to go. The set-up reminds me of Buffy in a way, which helped me connect to it pretty quick. -
Yea I think that makes sense as a way to look at it, especially with the ending being her realization she has to go do what she chooses, not what's expected. That's a pretty adult decision.

I'm about to call my nieces and recommend it! Speaking of, they got me into Trollhunters too. It's also good fun
