Theme Month: Jan. 2019 - Westerns

Cool I will check those out! Also interested in international directors -- what are the good movies from Africa perhaps that I should try? I'll poke around Amazon Prime and Netflix tonight and see what I can list. My focus on Unspooled has me sort of feeling like I'm missing out on cool stuff from other countries. -

I'm all for it, definitely! That makes sense. One thing I've begun watching is this Pioneers of African American Cinema collection on Netflix, which is a series of around 10-15 old films by black directors in the 30s or so. It's a nice starting point for this. If anyone has some better non-mainstream recs for this I'd appreciate that too -

I'm not Italian, but I am Indian and I get to be offended by this movie too! Fun for all!

Exactly! And how about when they were making dinner and he was basically like 'stop helping me, I'm making you a pizza'. She's in culinary school! She's better at this than you are, even if you're a man with a pizza oven in his apartment. Also, I should have screenshotted this but when he took the pizza out of that pizza oven, he put his hand right straight on that pizza paddle thing!

also this bit of Amazon Prime trivia has a lot in it

My cousin got married pretty much right at the place where the pizza competition at the end was filmed! (The brick-lined Distillery District on the above map.) That was the best part of the movie for me - recognizing the Toronto spots I'd been to. Anyway - gotta love yet another "throw your career away, ladies", unromantic, unfunny rom-coms. Thanks to HDTGM, I know this is a whole genre.

I definitely don't see her to be pure evil or a villain quite as much her rep, but I'm not so sure about calling her "angelic" like Paul did lol

Musical Mondays Week 58 The Last Five Years

Right, but she still thinks he's awesome at the end. He's saying goodbye for good, and she's just saying goodbye for now. It should be the other way around if there was any recognition that his behavior was shitty. He suffers no consequences. She loves him more and more, then he breaks up by letter, walks away, and that's that. I took all the criticism of him as us being more woke, not because the movie presented him that way. My read was that it's basically just an out-dated form of romance, the patronizing stuff that we as a society have quickly realized is problematic, but at the time, men (and women) thought was OK. -

That's the thing though, I don't think it does recognize that he's awful. -

Oh I was going to note, yesterday when I looked at this film on Letterboxd, everyone from the board here that I follow there and I all rated it exactly the same, which I thought was fun (like 6 of us in a row all did 2.5). Though looks like Quasar just broke the 2.5 star streak and put in a 2.0 haha. -

Yea I think that's the story they wanted it to be, but his patronizing and 'I tried to rescue you' and all that stuff turned it into something else -

CakeBug is an expert on the play, so I'll let him chime in on that side of this. But yea, our rabbit viewing was full of 'what's wrong with this guy?' and at one point I called it Mansplaining: The Musical The relationship absolutely was not equal, but they portrayed it as such, and that's kind of f-ed up. Also I mentioned this on Letterboxd but I found the direction of the film to be sooooooooo basic and uncreative, I couldn't get over it. Just an utter lack of art, like that long shot of just two hands holding or lots of long close-ups. There seemed to be no thought behind any of it. -

Saturday is possible for me, I'll try to drop in - I can grab the movie elsewhere tho so no need to go out of your way just for me -
I sort of had a mixed reaction to Sunset Boulevard. I mentioned in my Letterboxd review that I sort of found some of the characters cartoony and I was glad Amy & Paul backed that up, because I wasn't sure if I was taking some things wrong or not. I did love the dialogue and the strangeness and the mixing of genres -- it's noir-like but also not really a noir either. It is certainly very entertaining too. But in the end, there were two things I felt. One, I kept coming back to how much I LOVED Double Indemnity and while I try to take each movie on their own, but considering this had the same writer/director and such a similar feel, I'm not sure the top-100 needs both. If I have to choose, it's DI all day. And two, at the end of the movie, I think my basic reaction was "ok huh" and I turned it off and it didn't mean that much to me. Nothing about it lingered in me. On my personal rankings so far, it's sort of in the middle -- I definitely recognize some of its high points, but I can't get it over the bar to the top.
