I'm giving my baby to two strangers only to hold: Barack Obama, or Jason Mantzoukas. -

The context is that it's Jason Mantzoukas -
Yea when I was adding to my ongoing list, I thought a lot about Platoon. I ended up leaning slightly to Platoon, I prefer its tale and sort of more existential questions, but the vividness of Apocalypse Now was very close to making up for that.

i would but I'm waiting to re-watch Do The Right Thing with Unspooled (I haven't seen it since the '90s) -
I think that's generally true in the beginning of eps, but I feel like I've noticed a lot of times they start that way and then they each move their discussions towards each other to a closer point of agreement. That's one of my favorite things about hearing Paul and Amy talk about these things. And I like it's done naturally, not like they're trying to convince each other one way or another. It just happens.

Yea and I think this is what the show is about. It's certainly what we always end up moving to every week in these threads anyway!

Look man, give up on the podcast. That's fine. Nobody cares. Why did you feel you have to post about it? You never even posted here before! There's been TONS of podcasts that I was interested in, but quickly gave up on and didn't keep up with. That's not some failure of the podcast, and it's terribly arrogant of you to think that it is, and to come into a fan forum and rip on it. We all disagree about these movies on here sometimes, and we enjoy talking through it. That's what 'fora' are for. I was not all that into Apocalypse Now, but I got some good explanations from people who were, and I got good explanations from Amy why she isn't. That's why most of us are here, I imagine. You made it clear you want them to not "kill off" the "Seventies' Darlings" that you apparently love. So obviously you do want them to agree with you. Well maybe it's good for some alternate views on these sorts of things. How about you stand up and defend Apocalypse Now instead? I for one in no way saw this movie as a "knife's edge satire." Where did I go wrong then?

Why won't this podcast that I voluntarily listen to just totally echo everything I already believe?

Hm maybe yea. Though 2001 is one I wrote about being an experience, and it's my favorite thing we've watched yet. But even that feeling can and should leave you something, right? I'm not sure I'm expressing what I mean quite right, so I'll keep adjusting my thoughts on this over time. It might be definitional of the terms "think" and "feel" though, because I do think we agree: I may want something to think about, but I also do not want to think about the movie itself. I like when I forget I'm watching one! Those are my favorites. I think I've been consistent on that for these 20 movies. I want to be sucked into the universe and the metaphors and the characters and have a story that lingers with me or makes me reflect on something, but not worry about the logic and the acting and framing, as you mention. So perhaps we are both on the side of 'feel'? I don't want a moral necessarily, or that kind of specific thought provocation, but just something that leaves a mark. I don't think Apocalypse Now did that for me. Maybe I framed my initial question wrong -- though I love the answers so far -- but maybe I should have said "for those who like it, how does Apocalypse Now make you feel?"

I'd add Apoohcalypse Now on the AFI list for sure

I honestly don't have much else to say beyond the podcast on this one. I think Paul & Amy heavily focusing on the filmmaking and the personalities behind the movie indicate that the film left them a little cold, and that's where I was too. Most of the films on this list, even ones I haven't loved, left me thinking about something. Swing Time even made me (and us) go, "well are these dance scenes enough for greatness?" and we pondered that. Clearly Apocalypse Now is certainly impressive enough, and its greatness is right there in the burning jungles and weird acting for all to see, but what else is there to even contemplate? *shrug* I think that's what I'm finding here with this list: I want my great movies (or, even, art in general) to make me think, to leave some sort of mark. That's what sets a 'best movies ever' list apart from a list of 'fun stuff I like' for me. But maybe it was me: so to people who love this movie, what did it make you think about?

Musical Mondays Week 48 School Daze
AlmostAGhost replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
I've been having this conversation in my office a lot. Everyone loves Breaking Bad so much, and yet only a few have seen Saul. And I'm like, but it's better!! I just like a conman lawyer type as a lead character so much. And Kim too! To some extent, I've lost interest in Mike and Nacho and all that side of things, and I'm just so into seeing Saul's life unfold. -

I mean, if you like Breaking Bad at all, you'd love The Wire. There's no reason to skip out on that. Though I say that, and that's how I feel about The Sopranos - I haven't seen it and have no desire to. My hot take: Better Call Saul is better than Breaking Bad. -

Musical Mondays Week 48 School Daze

I saw She's Gotta Have It not too long ago and I really liked it. It's progressive, modern, and sexy, a good look at adult relationships. -
Musical Mondays Week 48 School Daze
AlmostAGhost replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
Yea, I just found the whole thing clumsy. Which is so weird, because Spike's first movie is great ("She's Gotta Have It") and his third is legendary ("Do The Right Thing"), and "School Daze" was made right between them somehow. I feel like there's gotta be a greater story about how this happened. Anyway if you look closely at the musical productions, they were so lo-fi, the choreography wasn't sharp, it all felt amateur. I did like a couple of the songs though. -
The original theatrical one. I believe they've said they will always do the original theatrical version of whatever movie they do.
