I thought the singers were fine, really, for young Canadian Idol quality performers. To me, the songs were just so bad that nobody could save them. I just was browsing through Wiki. The lead actress has an EP under the pseudonym of Sureilla. Spotify, here I come -

6-8 seems accurate to me. (I have nieces age 6 and 8. She seemed similar to me.) 6 seems a little young though, so I'd put her around 7 or 8. -

Musical Mondays Week 47 Stage Fright

I turned it off as fast as I could once the credits hit, but am I not mistaken that they liked "I'm Gay" so much there was a metal version of the song over the credits? Since the killer was all metal guy, what are they implying? Yikes -

Yea, the jokey side of this just sent the movie all wrong. They were stupid jokes. They undercut the tension. Also, the songs were bad. It appears that the distance between an inane camp play production is only a step or two away from freaking Broadway! I did like a few things, mainly I thought the lead actress was pretty good! I wanted more Minnie Driver too. I'd love for HDTGM to do this movie though, for sure. I kept wondering what Paul, June & Jason would think. -
I think this was key to me. That makes her ending not a happy one, right? She may have been saved out of sex work, but she did run away for a reason. That's not something we should ignore in the outcome either. And it's another flag to me that Bickle is indeed not a hero here.

My take is that Amy is not just a hater, but I reckon she's not drawn to "machismo" which is legit. Nothing wrong with that, especially nowadays, in 2018 as people have been realizing its toxicity. I think finding 'negative' reviews is massively entertaining too, especially for a series about movies which are considered the best. Did critics or society miss the mark by a wide margin on release? It's like the inverse of Paul doing Second Opinions on HDTGM. These movies are already raised up as high as they could be. We are watching the best movies of all-time. Nothing wrong with looking at where they're flawed or dated or whatever. Like I said earlier, I think on this ep, she focused on things outside the actual film more than she should, but I certainly don't think she's just hating on things people like (or liking things people hate). I loved how on this episode Paul & Amy started a certain distance apart, but by the end had more or less met at a midpoint.

Not an official update, BUT: Because of some Facebook conspiracy theorists who doubted the existence of Paul & Amy's 100-sided dice, they put up a clip of them rolling it for a future episode on twitter. They rolled #50, and were like "coming next Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid!" Problem was, they were reading the wrong list, and that movie is not #50 on the 2007 list, so I held off adding it. Amy just put on twitter a correction that they will be doing the actual #50. For our purposes, it's not currently clear if it's following Apocalypse Now or there's something in between. But I figure if anyone wants to watch the first two LOTR films in prep, there's some good lead notice now. EP 18. ET (#24) EP 19. HIGH NOON (#27) EP 20. APOCALYPSE NOW (#30) sometime soon: LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING (#50)

I do not believe he's vindicated at the end at all. He did all those things by accident, basically. Then society hails him as a hero, but that's an indictment of society, not a "see, he's awesome!" move. How does the film apologize for him? They show him failing at just about everything he attempts, from women, to assassination, to suicide. I am just as perplexed how anyone watches this and comes away with the idea that he's a hero to be idolized. I also think the very ending implies that he's going to go through this whole cycle again (and again). Maybe he'll feel 'normal' for a bit, but something else will distract him and turn him into a monster.

If I'm not mistaken, yes this movie did inspire him update: looked it up. Hinckley's lawyers actually brought up Taxi Driver in court

So just a few days ago, I saw this thing go around twitter: Taxi Driver is exactly this as well, looking to be about one thing, but actually the exact opposite, which is a really tough thing to pull off. It felt like a lot of Amy's criticism was due to the people behind it, or the fans who misinterpret it, and not the film itself. The film itself, maybe it had misogynist origins, but the end result is a critique of this mindset. Which totally saves it, imo. That subversion makes this movie. Without it? Ugh. Imagine if Cybil Shepherd wasn't some whipsmart political woman, and instead just some undefined stock female character? I do get where Amy is coming from though, I don't want to think this is so great or hold it out as a favorite, because of who the people are who put Bickle posters on their walls, or look at the concession lady and think she's a bitch for turning him down. (It's similar to my feelings for the Grateful Dead haha - I like them but don't tell anybody.) But in the end, I side with Paul that there's so much going on here, levels on levels on levels, that I think this is pretty great filmmaking.

whoa cool. we absolutely need to go through the remaining 300

Yea and that's why I can never really figure out how to answer that question. If it's not something I see as perfect, what moves it up into the list? Sixth Sense won't be in my top-100 after I finish watching every American movie (), I'm sure, but I just don't see how to argue the AFI on things like that... any more than I can argue Josie and the Pussycats on grudlian's. And the AFI has a long list of criteria laid out about what it looked for, which makes it even more difficult to be like "NO WAY."
-
I can't quite figure out how to answer 'should this be on the list?' So far, I've rated 3 movies 5 stars. And looking at some of your Letterboxd lists, that's pretty normal. I'm inclined to think the whole list should be five star films. Are we saying there aren't 100 American five-star movies? I can't figure out if that's unreasonable or not haha. But if it is, most of us don't think many of these movies should be on the list... I am definitely curious to see how many of these top-100 I rate 5 stars.

EP 17. TAXI DRIVER (#52) EP 18. ET (#24) EP 19. HIGH NOON (#27) EP 20. APOCALYPSE NOW (#30) so many guns

I should save this for a couple weeks, and I'll say more then... but that was me with E.T. (To be fair, I was like 6.)
-
Definitely. I think the confusing (or maybe even great!) thing about The Sixth Sense is it does mix the things all together, so labeling it any one is confusing. That's why I first mentioned it. It seemed like, "hey it's a great horror movie" was severely underplaying it. This movie, in particular, is a bunch of things all together. That's what I like about it. I still think it's flawed though (and I've seen like 2 other Shyamalan movies). I haven't seen The Ring! I'll try to check it out. Scary isn't really what I'm usually ever drawn to, but psychological (and vampires)... I love those.
-
Ohhh Let The Right One In and A Girl Walks Home are awesome!! If those, and The Sixth Sense, are horror -- I guess maybe I am a horror fan. I tend to think of horror as the bloody murderer disgusting stuff. Like, there's a difference to me between "Scary" and "Horror." But maybe there isn't?
-
Yea. Those drama real-world frights you mention are the real scares in the movie. The actual ghosts are not all that terrifying, really, beyond just their presence (usually as a surprise for the viewer). That's why I wanted more of those scenes -- let Haley go into the scary real world, with ghosts helping him out, and have him confront the horrors of reality. A woman with Munchausen Syndrome where she hurts her children? No match for Cole! Single mother needs encouragement? That's an affecting ghost story if you ask me. (I still think Sixth Sense comes very close to this, but doesn't quite go all the way with it.)

For the record, this guy on the FB group is not me lol
-
Hmm that's really interesting, and not one I'd considered. But, no, I don't believe in ghosts, so that could be why I want and look for those 'rules'. Regardless, I still think some consistency there would help from a storytelling point-of-view. There may be different ghost rules across different ghost stories, but within one ghost story, I think it needs to follow some ghost logic.
-
also some more random thoughts: 1. I vividly remember seeing this movie in 1999 and how great it was in the theater with a full crowd. Seeing it again was certainly a very different experience, but I still dug it... though I think knowing the twist also made the 'flaws' in the story more visible. They mentioned on the pod the inconsistency of the temperature dropping, and I think that's a good example -- but even just the basic visibility of ghosts, or their anger, or who communicates and how, seems inconsistent to me. It all just happens at the convenience of the story, and not due to any established 'rules.' Maybe I just haven't pieced it all together, but this could and should have been tightened up, I think. 2. I love the way the movie builds up to Cole conquering his fear and being able to help these ghosts out. In that way, it's a super hero origin story, right? He has power now! I want to see him use it more. I'd say the two best scenes are when he helps the sick girl and with his Mom in the car. We need more of those! Especially after seeing the hell Cole went through in the first half, these scenes are SOOO satisifying and awesome. 3. Rob Zabrecky! he played bass on a song or two on Beck's Mellow Gold album (his cool band Possum Dixon was from the same early 90s LA scene). It was cool to hear him here. 4. Maybe the definition of 'horror' has changed, but I really don't think of this as a horror film.
