Episode 102 - Sarah Huckabee Sanders Can't Do Sit-Ups (w/ Pam Murphy)
AlmostAGhost replied to JulyDiaz's topic in Hard Nation
Woohoo the last Sanders/Murphy ep was epic -
I definitely prefer Murmur which I find a 5-star classic, and Reckoning is always one I forget about and overlook in REM's oeuvre... but then, when I listen to it all the way through, I'm always into it and love everything on it. I guess I find a few of the songs are pretty samey ("Pretty Persuasion", "Second Guessing") but that's a minor complaint because that sameness is awesome. Current rankings: 1. Murmur 2. Reckoning

This episode was HOT, so appropriate for a Valentine's episode. Still laughing about how Listler spent her birthday... -

> And were they implying that R.E.M.'s b-side cover of "There She Goes Again" popularized The Velvet Underground? I'm pretty sure "Sweet Jane" has been in pretty steady radio rotation since 1970. True, but this is not the first time R.E.M. has received that credit, and I think it is actually somewhat true. As Scott said, VU were out of print mostly at the time. New college indie listeners probably didn't know them anyway in 1983. They helped bring attention back to the VU at a time when they had drifted into relative obscurity. It is hard to imagine now, since VU are legends now. This is mentioned in the recent Lou Reed biography by Anthony DeCurtis too. (R.E.M. also had this affect on Nick Drake and Syd Barrett's solo records!) Also I'll add, the quote about the VU having only sold 1000 albums, but all 1000 of those people started bands... that didn't come from R.E.M., but the Scotts' friend, old sourpuss, Brian Eno. -
Episode 33 - Katie Dippold - Spotlight On: Denise Fawmnst

also the bonus Listler's Lockdown is amazing... the caller who was like 'oh hi Gutters, I love you" and Marisa's reaction to her is probably gonna get me fired, I'm laughing so hard -

also I love REM a lot and have since about 1991 when my family got our first CD player and it came with a free CD version of Out Of Time. I was into U2 back then too but that's faded, but REM is still there -- I still play their stuff a lot. they do have definite eras which should make this podcast fun: early spirited mysterious jangley rock for the first few albums, then they went slightly more mainstream (though granted, a strange mainstream) for a bit. then they started rocking and that was great too. then they became a trio and made some bland stuff, though some great gems are buried in there for sure. their career is fascinating and weird and definitely discussion-worthy. (also I'll add, I'm a band fan who LIKES hearing The Scotts discuss bands I like; we don't get enough credit - it's always 'the band fans hate us' and 'comedy fans like us'.) I do think they could try to get Mike Mills on the pcast: he's active on twitter and super cool. -

This was so good, I'd assume it would make the year-end best-of countdown in December, but PFT wasn't on it.

3.5 hours! Also Mr. Microphone always makes me think of the Beck song "Cellphone's Dead" where he mentions it. If Beck is ever on CBB, Scott, you'll have to ask him about it

I think I'm getting used to this 'new' form... didn't like it so much on the first ep Matt tried it a few weeks ago, but I'm starting to dig it. Will have to go listen to the other one again -

the idea that CBB is now just 'mostly just people bitching about Trump' is absolutely crazy -
Pee Cast Blast would be the perfect time to debut the CBB All-Starr Band

I've listened to every episode since Comedy Death Ray and it's never been better. Thanks CBB people for that. Politics have always shown up, so that's a weird complaint. Also comedy reflects the times, doesn't it? Not sure what people want here. There's still plenty of insane characters and goofy chemistry. What else does CBB need to do? *shrug* -
