who do you think was the good guy in this movie? Not the protagonist, but the good guy?

It's not Clint?  Aren't we rooting for him the whole film?

  2. While I'm not overly familiar with westerns, my takeaway from Unforgiven was that it wasn't really all that revisionist.  Paul and Amy brought up some angles that I hadn't noticed so I guess it is more than I thought at first, but still overall, it feels to me to be basically built on the usual Western characters and telling a fairly typical story (an old vet pulled back into his old life; a 'search' for a bad guy). This isn't particularly a knock on the film though, I think it is told very well and gets a lot of strength from using those types of characters. It does infuse all of them with more moral depth which often makes them more interesting than, say, John Wayne in The Searchers, but still I'm not so sure.  Perhaps I need to watch more classic ones than I have, though, granted.

You bring up something that really frustrated me. He likes garlic. Crosses don't bother him. He can go out in the sun (with sun block). He has a reflection. Presumably he can't glammer because otherwise he'd win over Mona instantly. He's barely a vampire.

This is why I just can't like this movie.  Sure there's some enjoyable things in its goofiness, but they just seriously WERE NOT TRYING.  The levels of "not trying" are unforgiveable.  You have to at least have one sentence about who the mirror guy is.  About why garlic, crosses, and killing aren't part of his makeup. There's nothing.  It just ignores common lore and I'm supposed to buy it?  In fact, it's so disparate from vampire lore, I'd argue he's NOT a vampire.  I don't know what he is exactly, but it's not that.  He just lives forever, has fangs, and can turn into a gross bat person.

Ha! I just walked in the door. What happened to make you all bail?

Well it was just Grudlian and me and we'd both seen Gigli and we figured that one would be better with a big group to snark at it so we flipped to Rockula.  (Polly ended up joining in time for that one.) . Also I have Amazon Prime so neither of us had to pay for Gigli.

Oh yeah I knew this Friday would be a rebroadcast, but I'm not sure if they are going to jump into a mini-sode on the 11th or a full blown episode

Hmm this isn't super helpful for our purposes.  We could theoretically be waiting until the 18th for the next mini-EP?  And thus also to discuss Rockula?

Or should we just do Rockula this week, since this is just a rebroadcast?

  6. Yea, those undercurrents are what I was wrestling with -- I get they are there and maybe give the simple story a bit more depth, but I just don't think they change it enough for me in the end.

  7. No overbearing rules or commitments here, just an opportunity for us to dive into a genre/theme/idea over the course of the month. We don't have to watch the same films, or any set amount.  This isn't in place of HDTGM, Unspooled, HDTGM Classics, or Musical Mondays.  Just if, in your spare movie-watching time, you're stumped or looking for something to choose -- pick a film within our monthly theme.  If you find anything worth noting or sharing with the rest of us, post it here in this thread.  Knowing this forum, we like the stuff that's really good or either really bad, haha.  Let's explore!
