Episode 35 - Body of Evidence (w/ Lindy Jamil Gomez, Jessica Chaffin)

Thanks for the rec, Elektra B. I read the synopsis and it sounds right up my alley. Ooh, what podcast is that? I had considered watching Suicide Squad because of Margot Robbie. She really is a great actress. Even critics who gave the movie the thumbs down praised her performance. But looking at her costume, I suspected my enjoyment of her performance would be compromised. The various reviews and commentaries confirmed my suspicion. I like what A.O. Scott has written in his review. Another article I like is A.V. Club's Margot Robbie deserves better than Suicide Squad’s sexism.

Episode 142 - The Phantom: LIVE! (w/ Eliza Skinner, Ed Brubaker)
Auden replied to JulyDiaz's topic in How Did This Get Made?
- Maybe Billy Zane was made to smile so much in the movie because he has resting jerk face. - Devil's vortex: Group sex in a hot tub. - You can totally see Zane's nips through his costume. -
I've only watched the first 2 Nolan Batman. I only remember 2 scenes from the movies. One is the bank manager scene (William Fichtner is so fucking hot), and the other is the prisoner's dilemma scene. I love your points about darkness and realism. Thanks for replying to my question, Elektra Boogaloo! Haha. One of my friends wrote, "If you ship Jessica and Kilgrave, I abjure you. I see you no longer. I hunt with you no longer." What about manga? Many titles have martial arts in them. The Guardian has a list of recommendations for teens. Manga titles are not ongoing series. When they are done, they are done. (Then you watch the anime, and the movie.) Some titles are available in box sets, and some in omnibuses. Random thoughts on movie characters: As someone who struggles to be nice, to do the right things, to not lapse into chaos, I'm drawn to the nice and good characters. It's difficult to be nice and good. Confession: I'm not into superheroes. I really really tried to like them. I want to be part of the conversation! I don't like feeling left out! But I find the concept of superheroes to be libertarian, individualistic, and elitist. I don't like the idea of so much power being held by so few people, even if they are the good guys. When I watch superheroes movies, I find myself thinking, what about long term systemic changes, that would really save the world! The origin of all power is in the people! I prefer stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things, or, even better, stories of ordinary people working together to do extraordinary things (Yes we can!).

Episode 145 - Whitmer Thomas and Clay Tatum, Our Friends From School
Auden replied to agata's topic in Hollywood Handbook
If he hit it right, I might take him on a flight on my chopper. I love this ep! It's hilarious, and schoolboys Sean, Hayes, Clay and Whit were adorable. -
Suicide Squad's Rotten Tomato rating is now at 33%. Last week I predicted that the movie will bomb. Here's why. 1. The movie oozes ugliness. The color scheme is mud overlaid with the green tint found in the lower-budget products from Blumhouse. The chaotic visual style is anxiety-producing. It gives one the feeling of being trapped in a Hot Topic store. 2. The cast as a whole is not likable. Other than reports of Jared Leto's obnoxious pranks, we get instagrams of the cast members wielding tattoo guns and tattooing SKWAD on each other, hubristically, as if they were the cast of LotR. And the biggest names in the movie, Will Smith and Jared Leto, are both unlikable. 3. Look at the world we live in now. Everything is horrible. We don't need to spend $10 to see shady government officials getting shady people to carry out shady operations. We can just turn on the news. I think this is why DC movies are not doing well. The era of dark, morally ambiguous superheroes/super-antiheroes with little accountability is over. Anyway, we'll see soon enough how Suicide SKWAD (jesus) does in the box office. Oh I see. Ugh. Thanks for explaining the word to me!

Hahaha. Yes. Ep. 21 with the hilarious Drew Droege. One thing I've noticed about the Suicide Squad reviews is that quite a few critics (female AND male) wrote about the sexism in the movie. Even as recent as say, 5 years ago, the way female characters are portrayed in a movie was something not often discussed in movie reviews. I don't understand. What's wooiefy? I'd also like to express my frustrations over a few internet comments. I was dicking around the Earwolf forums when I came across a discussion of Zhang Yimou's Hero. The opinions were so wrongheaded and they were delivered with the utmost authority.

Ohhh so when you said "bring something else to the table," you meant have a big—, okay, I gotcha. Elegantly segueing . . . Guys if you haven't listened to Bitch Sesh yet and am curious to know what the fuss is all about (how it became a hit with both critics and listeners so fast), I recommend starting with ep. 3 where our June Diane is the guest. Then ep. 20; Casey Wilson's micropenis encounter alone is worth the price of admissions. Then ep. 34, the show's first live ep. All this talk of nice/"nice" guys reminded me of a song that I haven't heard in a long time, Shy Guy from the Bad Boys soundtrack. What a blast from the past! A week ago I saw The Golden Child (it's streaming on Hulu now). It still holds up! It's still funny and it's still a little scary (the blood oatmeal).

Episode 145 - Whitmer Thomas and Clay Tatum, Our Friends From School
Auden replied to agata's topic in Hollywood Handbook
I don't know. With names like Whitmer Thomas and Clay Tatum, and the promise of drama, it feels like the school is Deep Springs College. http://www.vanityfair.com/news/2004/06/deep-springs-college200406 -
Loving everyone's love stories! Haha, Law and Order:Plain. And wow, Ellen, law school! Go you! Yay! Glad I'm not alone with CM. There are definitely episodes I skipped. I wasn't sorry to see Gideon go. His character is a bit melodramatic. I think CM is one of the few long-running shows that actually improves as time goes on. Starting from season 10, there are much fewer storylines involving sexual violence against women. There is also more diversity in guest stars and background actors. There was even an Asian unsub! I think making those changes prevented the show from getting stuck in a rut. Kudos to Erica Messer, one of the few female showrunners. ETA: Oh, last week's ep is on AV Club's Podmass! Along with eps from "Hollywood Handbook" and "Bitch Sesh", 2 other podcasts that I love. http://www.avclub.com/detail/close-encounters-presents-open-dialogues-about-sex-240368

You guys are too much, ganging up on Cam like this. His silence is worrying me. Does anyone know where he lives? We should check his area hospitals' burn units.

Ooh, parts of my post were read on the DNC edition of the minisode. And Paul pronounced my name correctly. Re: Reason why there is no opium trade in Tibet (and Mongolia). I neglected to add inaccessibility, sparse populations, and limited arable lands. I think those factors, even more so than religion, were what prevented those countries from being producers and/or consumers of opium. I love Paul's public speaking advice: Flank yourself with two big German Shepherds.

Episode 141 - The Shadow: LIVE! (w/ Pete Davidson)
Auden replied to JulyDiaz's topic in How Did This Get Made?
Oh dear. A racial injustice twofer! Even though the 2 things concern different aspects of racism. The 15th season of L&O: SUP is on Netflix. Yes! I'm going to check out that Shepherd episode after I've finished my yearly viewing of Criminal Minds (what a sad habit to have). I haven't been watching the show since Meloni left. I see I've missed a few guest stars, including JEREMY IRONS WHAT. -

Love the episode! - "I'm a lady in the street, and a shitter in the sheets." - This live episode really brought Casey and Danielle's hosting talents to the forefront. They kept the energy up and formed a great rapport with the guests and the audience. Give the ladies a talk show, Hollywood! - The audience was great. Special medal of valor goes to the woman who revealed her laughing mishap. - I've listened to Attack of the Clown multiple times. I didn't know who Melissa Rauch was, but after this, I'm definitely going to check out The Bronze. -

She's 46. As Jason puts it, gross. Won't see. All joking a salad, I was watching "Criminal Minds" earlier and Cybill Shepherd was in it. She was onscreen for all of 5 minutes, but she dominated it. One small movement of her face evoked so many things. I wish she's in more things. -
Episode 144 - Howard Kremer, Our Close Friend
Auden replied to JulyDiaz's topic in Hollywood Handbook
Love this week's ep. I've been wishing I could hear Hayes say the cute, yet somehow dirty, name Squirtle, then he said, "Squirtle, Squirtle," on the show. I also enjoy the shower story, with its silly details of a shower porch swing covered with "imitation velvet," and a screaming moth that avoided getting wet by weaving in and out of the water streams. That's a perfect fan nickname. As Kulap points out Sean is both sweet and tart. Doggicula! -
