    2001: A Space Odyssey

Something 2001 failed to predict - you can drink out of cups (instead of through a straw) in space now. https://nerdist.com/new-space-cups-let-astronauts-drink-without-straws

Did anyone else Google the full instructions for the zero gravity toilet? Just me then?

No, she mainly used the movies to loosely tie it to her lessons. But I remember she thought the baby at the end was a big bang-type event and the universe starting over.

I first watched 2001 in 8th grade science class, lol. Science teachers can be obsessed with films too! She made us marathon 2001 and 2010 and had us complete a take-home quiz about the 2 films. I think that's why I always thought the monolith was kind of a catalyst in science terms - it speeds up a reaction, but itself does not get used up.
  6. Taylor and Sara, did you guys watch the OG Queery Eye? I saw Ted yesterday, petting the neighborhood cat.

That was Helga, Fabrizio's lady friend. It wasn't a look of disgust on Rose, it was more like awkward-recognition-helplessness.

I think I might be in the minority here, but I enjoyed Cal in a hdtgm kind of way. He was such an ott caricature of a dastardly villain - I’m surprised they didn’t give him a mustache to twirl. It was completely unrealistic how he ends up going off the deep end, but the journey was fun to watch. Maybe Rose would’ve gotten to the point has not that grating assistant made her watch a computer simulation of how the Titanic went down. She was there! She didn’t need to watch it again! And I don’t think everything in the movie was part of her story. There were way too many private conversations that Rose wasn’t a part of and she didn’t tell the, the part about her sticking her hand in the coat and finding the necklace.

    1. Do you think constructive criticism is negativity? 2. Don’t worry, you have healthy competition there (see: my response to 1)

    Titanic

The conversation moves so fast, I don't know which quote to reply to. Anyway, I don't think I misunderstood anything. My post wasn't criticizing or disagreeing with Sy's experience at all. We were all posting our experience with Titanic and they were all interesting to read. I quoted the "ding ding ding" part because if that was the "winner" for why Titanic received backlash, then I expected similar backlash to Clueless or Mean Girls - these were just examples off the top of my head and movies that I personally love, but I'm sure there are better examples. Other people have posted theories on it, and sure, "movies for teen girls" is part of it, but I still don't think it's the main reason for the Titanic backlash.

Musical Mondays Week 41 Hello, Dolly!

My favorite (and most applicable?) was when she said to call her if you need cheese imported. That would be my card.

    Titanic

Do we though? Movies like Clueless and Mean Girls were movies teenage girls loved and I don't think there's internet backlash over them. Anyhoo, I didn't like Titanic when I saw it in the theater, but when I rewatched it yesterday, I was surprised by how much I had apparently retained. I can't say the same about many movies I saw only once more than 20 years ago. However, I ended up putting this below Swing Time. Minus *that scene* in Swing Time, I enjoyed it more and would absolutely rewatch it over Titanic.

Once in the theater and once yesterday (with many breaks).

Musical Mondays Week 41 Hello, Dolly!

Something else that's been bothering me - why did Irene end up with Cornelius? We all saw Cornelius was smitten with Irene at first sight, but I didn't think Irene was. Yes, she did sing about wanting to attract a man with her fancy hat, but I didn't think she meant someone like Cornelius. I might have missed it, but what was Irene's "moment"?

How are you ranking the movies? Is it based on historical significance and technical achievement or just how much you enjoyed it?

Musical Mondays Week 41 Hello, Dolly!

Take her to this. According to Amazon trivia, the producers wanted to dub Crawford's singing voice, but Gene Kelly fought to keep it. So, for a musical that features so much dancing, the 2 leads do so little, which isn't too different from the stage version I guess. But I thought it was funny that Walter Matthau's "choreography" mainly involved marching in place.

Haha, that little intro from Wright is the reason I watched French connection in the first place.

I'm not looking forward to this either. I only watched it once in the theater and it was enough.

Musical Mondays Week 41 Hello, Dolly!

OR, is Wall-E actually Dall-E (sorry not sorry) and no longer wants to live by himself? Plus, Wall-E is a fixer/doer who just wants to help humanity, like Dolly! And Eve does a pretty good grump. Not sure about Carol Channing, but when I saw Bette Midler in Hello Dolly she was ~70.
