Musical Mondays Week 40 La La Land
tomspanks replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
How about that time she completely forgot about dinner plans with her boyfriend and his brother. Then she runs out during the middle of dinner with just a "sorry" to go watch a movie with Seb? Maybe not a "garbage person," but still rude. -

We're no Mia and Seb though. We tried to take some tango lessons once and almost divorced right then and there.- 272 replies

You've brought up the "baby" thing again, so it must have been in a big deal to you, but if I may chime in, in the context of their relationship and the situation, I don't think it's supposed to be a hard hitting insult. Since the beginning, Seb has always had that cheeky roguish flirting style. Like in "A Lovely Night." They clearly have chemistry, but he says that the beautiful night sky is wasted on 2 people like them and says Mia is not the type for him. It's like when my husband and I call each other "dummy" when we're joking around. -

Yup. Last line in the song: “Is this the start of something wonderful and new? Or one more dream that I cannot make true?” -

What IS traditional to you though? I'm genuinely curious - are you talking about swing? Blues? Dixieland? I mean, artists like Charlie Parker came on the scene in the 40s and turned tradition on its head. And even if you have a cut-off of 60s/70s, that's still like 60 years of jazz that you do like. You're missing out on some great stuff though! -

Maybe the entire audience saw the fantasy sequence in their head in some mass hallucination. -

I was addressing your statement "So, I can't properly judge it but it doesn't look like much improvisation is going on which is a fundamental of jazz." If improvisation is your only requirement, then it's been checked off by Seb's piano solo. Your definition of jazz is very narrow and it's probably fair to say you like a specific genre of jazz, and that's fine, but you must realize "jazz" is an umbrella term and there is a lot of variation within this classification. For example, check out "nu jazz" - this is probably a good description of the genre of John Legend's song in the movie. -

Talking during a set was frowned upon at every club I've been to. When you have to shell out $65 to see an artist, plus x-drink minimum, you bet you're gonna stfu and listen. -

Improv doesn't have a set amount of bars. A solo can be 4 bars or 40 bars. Seb's solo was supposed to be "improv." -

Also see: "Someone in The Crowd" I loved it the first time I watched it, but then the luster started to fade on subsequent rewatches (yeah, I watched it more than twice, so sue me). Maybe because I started watching a lot of the classic musicals that inspired La La Land and to me, the line between homage and ripoff started to get blurred. So really, I blame Musical Mondays for making me fall out of love with La La Land. If anything, I will listen to the soundtrack more than I revisit the film (spoiler alert: I have). And guys, we have to keep the opening number/song because it's a big chunk of the Epilogue (aka the dream fantasy sequence at the end). Without it, we wouldn't get to see JK Simmons being all delightful with the head bopping and finger snapping. -

So, everyone is dumping on Seb/Ryan Gosling (including me a bit), but one of the real standouts was his piano playing. One of my pet peeves is when musicians on screen blatantly fake play their instruments and I thought his playing was totally believable! Speaking of music, one of my favorite moments is that trumpet solo in the "fantasy" sequence (Epilogue on the soundtrack) and the last note, that double A. God, I love that. So I looked up the trumpet player, but apparently the actor/musician in the movie is not the trumpet soloist on the soundtrack! It's Wayne Bergeron on the soundtrack and I found out that he also played trumpet on the Incredibles soundtrack. I love that theme song so much. I recommend checking it out for anyone who loves kickass brass sections. Anyway, Wayne Bergeron has one more fan today! -

She likes hot showers and listens to 80s music, I think? Also, she's terrible at mailing out invitations. -

Do you not remember the beginning of the movie? TRAFFIC JAM EVERYWHERE I don't hate Seb and I don't think their lives would have been necessarily better if they stayed together. The "what if" fantasy is just that, a fantasy. Don't get me wrong, I love the entire sequence too, but no relationship/marriage is going to turn out like the fantasy in your head. -

The dance number is from The Young Girls of Rochefort, another Demy film. I think they say that the ending of Umbrellas inspired the ending of La La Land. IIRC, there are no big dance numbers in Umbrellas. -

John Legend never came across as a villain to me and I don't think the movie was saying that either. I think at worst he seemed like a guy with a different perspective and I think we were supposed to notice the fact that he was trying to innovate and make jazz more accessible, unlike Seb whose dream was to open old timey jazz club. Neither are right or wrong, although I'd rather listen to John Legend sing, lol. -

I vote keep it! It works for me 100%. It reminds you that there are countless people who go to LA to "make it" in the business. I bet you could've told a story about each person. Who is yellow dress? Who is the second yellow dress? The tie guy? The Rosie the riveter? It also tickled me that something dreary and rage-inducing thing like a traffic jam on the freeway is turned into a musical number that's so unashamedly exuberant and joyful that when I saw it in the theater, it made me tear up. Mia was wearing a completely different dress too. However, if I may get into the nitpicky section of the post, the real movie poster annoys me every time I have to see how Seb's left wrist is bent down and ruins the extension of his arm. You'd never ever see Fred Astaire doing that. And yes, I get that having 2 leads who are regular people singing and dancing in a musical is part of the charm of the movie, but it only makes me wonder what the movie would've been like had the 2 leads been cast with people who could make it seem effortless. -
Just wanted to say I absolutely loved the physicality of the scarecrow. It really looked like he had no bones. His legs were like rubber bands. Then I realized hey, I’ve seen that before - Bill Irwin’s merengue geekout in My Blue Heaven. https://youtu.be/q3oke-znT7o PS - my favorite Oz reference is the Femputer from Futurama

Wait a minute. After Dorothy goes back to Kansas, is the Toto thing resolved or does he still have to be put down?
