Ah shit, I forgot to bring this up. Yes, she definitely has the bends now. Hope there’s a hyperbaric chamber on that flying air base. -
I thought that was funny too! This movie made me wonder - when Jesus heals the lepers, do they get their missing fingers and limbs back? Does the Bible address this?
-
So if Ester had told Judah, the story would’ve been shorter. This reminds me, if the damn roofer had done his job properly, we might have had a 20 minute movie
-
But on the other hand, what about Judah’s wish of finding his family? How do you weigh one against the other? What’s more astounding to me is that she had to make that choice in 3 seconds. I bet she had many restless nights over this choice. I think if I were Judah it would’ve taken me longer to reconcile with Ester after I found out she was keeping my family away from me. Then again, I have yet to be touched by Jesus, so im full of vengeance.

Completely unrelated to the movie. In the podcast, Paul said something about how the filmmakers seemed to be mostly focused on the visuals and Paul said they were checking off the boxes without coloring them in. This cracked me up because I imagined Paul filling out forms by coloring in the checkboxes and then checking them off. Adorable..

I think it’s his eyes. The man doesn’t blink! Also, it was fascinating how when he opens his mouth to speak, it seemed like you could see all his teeth. Anyway, I’m a bit late to the party, but i wanted to bring up a few things. In the opening montage, did anyone else notice this girl? I feel like she just wandered onto the set in her 50s A-line dress and nobody kicked her out. Question for the group - if you were Ester, would you keep the fact that Judah’s family were alive a secret from him? If you were Judah, would you have forgiven Ester so easily? Lastly, leper spelled backwards is repel. Coincidence??

Wanted to address Tawny’s complaint that fire doesn’t work under water: No, but really, while it’s true that you can’t have “fire” like the campfire above, welding underwater creates sort of a fire. And ignited thermite burns so hot that can burn underwater too. Anyway, really enjoyed Tawny on the episode and love her for referencing “toepick” from my favorite sports rom com, The Cuttng Edge. -

Oh for sure. He probably has to deal with insurance claims and lawsuits constantly for all the collateral damage he causes in the city. -
I’m going with Cleopatra. It’s a dumpster fire that almost bankrupted 20th Century Fox, but it’s the most epic dumpster fire.

Well, the rocket countdown started in English, so who even knows. Before they fried the control panel, Polly pressed the emergency release button and all the pods containing the animals were on their way back to earth way before the explosion. Hmm, maybe that's why they were shrinking animals? -

Sorry for the multiple posts, but I also wanted to ask if anyone else got Citizen Kane vibes from this movie? Citizen Kane was fresh on my mind, thanks to Unspooled (the new podcast series covering the AFI 100), so I noticed a few similarities from Sky Captain. For example, in many dialogue scenes, the screen is divided so that the speaker is facing the camera and on the left, while we only see the back of the head of the receiver/audience on the right of the screen, very similar to shots in Citizen Kane. Then there is the name of the newspaper that Polly works for, The Chronicle. Kane ran the Inquirer, but during the breakfast table montage with Kane's first wife, as their relationship deteriorates we see that Emily starts reading the rival paper, The Chronicle. Lastly, when they showed Totenkopf's castle, did anyone else think this looked like Kane's castle, Xanadu? -

Paul said that even putting aside the terrible looking cgi, this movie is stupid and while I didn't hate this movie as much as some people on the forum, I did notice a couple of stupid inconsistencies. When the Iron Giants invade Manhattan to steal generators, why did they stop flying and start marching down the streets to the destination? Just...fly all the way to the generators. At the lab with the tiny adorable elephant, Polly and Sky Captain find the dying doctor. Sky Captain finds a briefcase and Polly says "Dr. Jennings had this with him this morning at the theater." I just assumed Polly went to Radio City Music Hall to a 6 PM showing. I don't think they would've played the Wizard of Oz at 6 AM? Speaking of, Wizard of Oz came out in 1939. Was this a revival showing? Right before Polly and Sky Captain leave for Shangri-La, Polly sends a telegram to her newspaper editor to tell him of her plans. She tells Dumbledore that she hopes to be back soon with Dex and the story. Does Dumbledore even know who Dex is? Does Dumbledore know that Dex was kidnapped, or even know who he is? Why would he care about Dex?! Towards the end of the movie, Dex finally reveals Totenkopf's plan. Dex says that "when the rocket reaches 100 km, at the edge of space, Earth will be incinerated." For perspective, at 100 km, you'd only be 0.026% on your way to the moon. 100 km is hardly on the "edge of space." -

Omg no wonder the songs reminded me of Letter to Cleo. I can’t believe I never knew that. -

There’s the reason that sometimes they need to obtain licensing to show a product, which costs money, so it’s a way to bypass that. But also, sometimes its because the show/movie doesn’t want to give free advertising to a product. -
