Did anyone else think Nola and Shelby (the 2 white people) were going to get together? I didn't want that, but I felt like the movie was heading that way.

Yeah, it was probably the early 2000s. Djay mentions Kobe in one of his songs and it was probably around the time of the Lakers 3-peat. Yes, but I don't think he was stupid. I mean, yeah, he got lucky and got a chance to meet Skinny, but once he got to Arnel's, the way Djay manipulated Skinny was like a masterclass on hustling (until the bathroom scene of course). And I couldn't write like that. What would my rap even be about? the hardship of having to wait 30 minutes for bottomless mimosas at brunch?

Well, Djay definitely referenced Skinny Black's underground tapes at Arnel's bar. Remember Djay pulls out one of Skinny Black's tapes, slides it across the table, and Skinny's all excited to see it? Wait a minute. What year is it supposed to be in the movie? Are we sure it takes place in 2005? We're making fun of Djay's cassette tapes, but at the end, even the prison guards (Big 5-0 and Block C, ha) hand Djay their demo cassette tape.

I thought Key (Anthony Anderson) had enough confidence. At first Djay probably said he had a working microphone and Key went with it since it was a given that Djay could not afford to upgrade his equipment. I think what they were going for is that Djay's flow is so good that it inspires people like Key and Shelby to pour their time and energy into helping Djay.

I mean, that doesn't excuse his behavior at all. However, he is going to raise Keisha as his daughter (or so he promises), so there's that at least?

Small correction: Keisha (Shug's baby) isn't Djay's daughter. During the prison visitation scene, Djay tells Key that Keisha "got a ho for a mama and a trick for a daddy that nobody even know where he at."

Oh you know what, she did kiss the new microphone. Still, that's weird she would be featured on the poster twice.

Something that I remembered. In the studio, when Bobby is being let go from the band, and it's revealed that he's gay, Izzy asks "you're gay?" and Bobby says something like "No, I have pierced nipples and a house in Morocco because I'm John Wayne." Does anybody know what this means? He implies that gay men like pierced nipples, fine whatever, but the house in Morocco? I didn't think Morocco was a LGBT-friendly country. And the John Wayne part? Were there rumors that he was gay or maybe he had a house in Morocco? I dunno, this one sentence really stumped me.

That wasn't Mats. I believe if was AC (or one of the other band members). I actually rewound this part, because I couldn't believe he was on liver dialysis on the road. Unlike the more common kidney dialysis, liver dialysis isn't something patients need regularly for years, as it is usually needed by patients with liver failure waiting for transplants. This guy should've been in a hospital, not chugging back hard liquor after a show.
