Episode 169 - The Garbage Pail Kids Movie: LIVE!
tomspanks replied to JulyDiaz's topic in How Did This Get Made?
Depressing fact #2: Jim Cummings provided the voice of Greaser Greg and Nat Nerd. He is also the voice of Winnie the Pooh! I guess Winnie the Pooh already has a GPK name. -
Why do we even need a King of the Hill reboot? The series was pretty much perfect, I tell you what.

Episode 169 - The Garbage Pail Kids Movie: LIVE!

According to Astin (from a Mental Floss article): Even Gomez Addams couldn't get him out of it. -
I thought this comparison was interesting. Gigi Release date: May 15, 1958 Budget $3,3 mil Box office $13,2 mil South Pacific Release date: March 19, 1958 Budget $5.61 mil Box office $36,8 mil South Pacific was the top grossing film in 1958 and Gigi was at a respectable #5. Another random factoid: Leslie Caron gave birth to her son on 30 March 1957 and Gigi started filming in September 1957!

Do we know why Guga liked Gigi so much?
-
But why not just let her go instead of tracking her down and making a spectacle out of pranking her? He couldn't wait until she got back into town to confront her or void the contract? French high society was weird. FWIW I thought Gabor was actually enamored with that other guy - not that it mattered, since he was a jerk too. Now that I think of it, was there any male character that came off as a decent guy? I definitely missed the joke about her suicide attempt. I seriously thought people in the movie were being insensitive.
-
I think it was a case of "if I can't have her, no one can". He's a vindictive prick. It was so weird how her suicide was never brought up again. I wonder how many women were driven to suicide by Gaston's crazy antics.
-
You mean you're not going to study this movie in prep for your trip?
-
While I'm not enamored with the movie, it was an interesting look back at the past. Gigi is kind of considered a good, wholesome, family movie, right? It's amazing how much attitudes have changed.
-
I wondered though if the movie did a poor job of depicting the home life of Gigi and her family. Do they even have an income besides Gigi's mother's gig at the opera? I think they mention she has one line, so she can't be earning enough to support 3 people, right? So all things considered, I think it's more likely that they live in squalor rather than in the beautiful set from the movie.

I didn't hate the character, but I can't say I really liked her either. I felt sorry for her more than anything.
-
I was afraid of that.

I thought they had a lovely apartment, but then Gaston describes the apartment as moldy, with decaying walls and worm ridden furniture (what?), surrounded by filth. That definitely didn't come through in the movie. This reminds me of something else. In the beginning of the movie, Chevalier says "Like everywhere else, most people in Paris get married. But not all. There are some who will not marry and some who do not marry. But here in Paris, those who will not are usually men and those who do not are usually women." What is he trying to say?
-
No. Fuck that guy.
-
Re: Chevalier, I read on Wikipedia that "the character of Honoré, nonexistent in the original book and very minor in the Loos play, was now a major figure. Gigi's mother, originally a significant character, was reduced to a few lines of dialogue delivered off-screen." That brings me to my next gripe, which is why bother with the mother character? What exactly does she bring to the table?
-
I like South Pacific a lot. The music's fun and its anti-racism messages were quite progressive for its time. ETA: Having said that, I could be biased, bc the stage version was so good.
-
So, when Gaston storms out of Gigi's apartment (the first time) and he's strolling through Paris ruminating about Gigi, he sings: It sounds like he was more attracted to her body than her youthful spirit. You know what MFL had that Gigi didn't? A choreographer. I don't understand why they would cast Leslie Caron and give her no dance numbers. I don't think they hired her for her voice either, as they dubbed her singing in the movie. I mean, are you kidding me? I've said this elsewhere, but Gigi has too much singing while people are sitting down or just casually strolling along. Give me some choreography! There's literally a scene where Chevalier sings at a table while preparing to pay the bill. WHY.
-
A better title for this movie would be How Gaston Got His Groove Back. This is really his story and he even gets to sing more songs than Gigi. While things happen to Gigi, Gaston gets to make all the important decisions. I guess that's expected though, since you know, Gigi is a CHILD.
-
In the story, Gigi is 15 going on 16 and Gaston is close to 40. The author Colette's real-life "models" for Gigi were a teen and a man of SIXTY.

I will be drinking red wine because I'm classy. Actually, I have no idea what this movie is about - never read a synopsis and haven't listened to the hdtgm ep - so I don't know what to pair it with. -

Thanks, CamH. I think there might be a way to share someone's desktop & movie player, but I could be wrong. Also, why does grudlian own the DVD? Is it that good?
