I tend to agree with this. Mark doesn't have the chutzpah to win anyone back, let alone "steal" someone.
-
That's interesting. I thought Mark seemed to be still hung up on Maureen, at least until the end of Tango Maureen. Maureen didn't have to twist his arm too much to get him to help with the sound system for free. Adding insult to injury, Collins does that "whipped" sound at Mark and Mark couldn't deny it.
-
My interpretation of the Maureen/Joanne dynamic was same as Fister's, but after reading the other posts, I'm not so sure anymore! I love that I can still discover new things about Rent from you guys. Kateacola, the Idina & Aaron couple news blew my mind!
-
So you're saying Maureen is also an "unrepentant slut" like the first "unrepentant slut"? Why can't we have one musical without a female lead slutting it up, amirite?
-
I've watched the movie and seen the stage version of Kiss Me Kate and neither productions made me think the Bianca/Lois character was an "unrepentant slut," whatever that means. If I recall correctly, her boyfriend (or fiance?) has a crippling gambling problem, where he actually signs an IOU to another name, so why wouldn't she try to stop him from gambling?

I've been poo-poo'ing this movie thus far, so I wanted to bring up something that I loved about the movie... Jesse L Martin's 1000-watt smile. My goodness, he's got a gorgeous smile. And the scene where Mark quits his Buzzline job by sing-screaming his resignation into the air. I lol'ed so hard. ITSV he resigns over the phone, like a normal human being.

Maybe "update" is the wrong word here. Inspired by? Loosely based on?

Noooooo I didn't pay $1500. I went a few years after it opened, when ticket prices were more reasonable (on top of the discount through work). Didn't see any of the original cast, but Ben Platt was Elder Cunningham, and I'm going to see him again in May in Dear Evan Hansen. I'm very excite. ETA: WTF, name confusion.

Not sure I would lump Rent in with Once and Spring Awakening. Rent ran for 12 years on Broadway and it's now on "tour." I think that's pretty good for something that became dated so fast. Also, Book of Mormon is one of my favorite musicals of all time. I get the hype.
-
Nah, it might have been controversial back in 1996, but it's not really anymore. I can't find the article, but even Daphne Rubin Vega says as much.

I watched the first 2 episodes of Father Ted. It's grand (not sure if this is correct usage). Yes, definitely start a food blog. Post some mandarin recipes.

Danny = Roger Colleen = Collins Madame Gao = Angel Harold = Maureen Joy and Ward = Mark Claire = Mimi Drunken master = Benny (the secret hero of the whole thing) ETA: Forgot to add Hogarth = Joanne

Let us know how it turns out. I'm partial to korma, myself. Back to Rent for a bit. When Benny sings "Our dream can become a reality, you'll see boys" it reminded me of this from Father Ted. I think Benny's underrated. He sings my favorite line from Rent. You want to produce films and write songs? You need somewhere to do it! It's what we used to dream about. Think twice before you poo-poo it.

Oh yeah? The kids eat that? What recipe do you use? The thought of making Indian food at home intimidates me. I did make naan over the weekend though!
-
All those open tabs were for naught! So, I never had Indian food until college. The first time at an Indian restaurant, the only thing I recognized was vindaloo, so I ended up ordering it. I mean, they sung about it, so it must be good right? Ohhhh boy, I love spicy things, but it was on another level of spiciness. Regarding 8BC

A thousand dollar guarantee. Tax free and a bonus if she trims the tree.

Here's hoping that Angel's angel shows up in Mimi's dream later that week and shows her she can be happy without other people's baggage.
-
A few of you have mentioned disliking Mimi. Why is that? Is it an issue with the character or Rosario Dawson herself? Rosario's born and raised in the LES and the little bit I read about her early life actually reminds me of Mimi, so I was excited about seeing homegirl in Rent. Also, when I first saw Rent, as an impressionable yoot, I thought Mimi was badass and totally loved her character, drug abuse notwithstanding. But Rosario's Mimi seemed even more helpless and naive than Daphne Rubin-Vega's Mimi. And there's the difference in voice. Rosario's a fine singer, I think, but I prefer the raw/edginess of Daphne's voice. And ITSV, Mimi wears these awesome turqoise pleather pants. I wish they had kept them for the movie!

You should really watch the stage version! There are lots more of these sweet voicemails from the parents (not just Mark's). Bonus, Mark doesn't complain about them. ETA: Oops, I forget Mark toasts to "hating dear old mom and dad" in La Vie Boheme.

Benny specified that the rent from the condos on top of the building would keep the cyber studio open, so he wasn't even asking Mark and Roger to pony up the cash to use the cyber studio!
-
Oh I know, Benny is the hero of the musical (he pays for Angel's funeral, he offers to pay for Mimi's rehab). So, in the prewar buildings that made up the apartments in the East Village in the late 80s, early 90s, it's impossible to know how much each apartment's utility usage is (one meter for each building type deal). There's usually one boiler for the building to provide heat as well. The landlord usually pays for the utilities, which is then reflected in the monthly rent.
-
WTF! I need to watch this episode, but it's not available on mtv anymore, grrr. In the stage version (lol, I can't help it either), it was supposed to be just Mark & Roger who were being evicted (and later Mimi too I guess). He wanted the homeless ("tent city") gone from the vacant lot so he can build on it. He wanted the "cyber studio" on the bottom floor and condos on top. As per what this cyber studio was supposed to be like, I imagine it would have been something similar to Entertainment 720?

She's totally full of shit. She says that she can't help that other people fawn over her, but it looked like she was the aggressor in these situations. She's actually the woman in rubber (cat suit).

I did not care for the movie version as much as the stage version. Here are some of the big problems. Many of the lines that were originally sung turned into speaking lines. Some of the lines were ridiculous to begin with, when you take the music out and make them into dialogue, it sounds even more ridiculous. They also got rid of the answering machine messages, which were fun little breaks like Mark's mom singing "So let her be a lesbiaaaaaaaan." The East Village and Alphabet City exteriors didn't look like the East Village or Alphabet City. They shot much of the movie in California and in studios and it shows. They got rid of the backstory of Roger's ex-girlfriend. She killed herself by slitting her wrists in the bathroom. Her note was "We've got AIDS." I mean, come on, that's some serious "baggage." In the movie, he just comes across as being a jealous controlling douchebag, but really, he was afraid to watch another lover die. I don't know why I left this off until last, but the beginning of the movie, the set up to the whole thing, is done poorly. We open with the 8 friends singing Seasons of Love. I completely don't understand the reason for this choice. It's a lovely song, in fact, one of my favorites, but it's jarring to go from Seasons of Love to Mark angrily pedaling his bike through Manhattan, complaining about "eviction or pay, RENT!" It makes no sense, because the scene with Benny telling them to pay the back rent or gtfo comes after this song in the movie. So Mark knew about the eviction notice, but then when he speaks to Benny later, he's completely surprised about it. WHAT?! Speaking of Benny, he redeems himself in the musical version. At Angel's funeral, the priest tries to kick them out because Collins and others can't pay. Benny comes to the rescue and settles the bill. Collins tells Benny that Angel killed his akita (Evita), and Benny admits he always hated that dog. Collins and Benny exit stage as buddies. See, isn't that nicer than the movie Benny who had a "thing" with Mimi when she was only 17?! (in the stage version they have a thing 3 months prior).

I think King loves cats. Also, I hope everyone keeps posting awesome cat gifs. My body is ready.
