    Musical Mondays-Week 2-Hairspray

I came here for the bad movies, but stayed for the over-analyzing. I've enjoyed and appreciated reading the diverse opinions here, which often surprises me and makes me reconsider my original thoughts. I've read your posts in this thread several times (to over-analyze your over-analyzing) and I think I get where you're coming from. Divine in Hairspray is special to you and you probably feel protective, understandably. Also, as there are very few quality LGBTQ+ representation in entertainment, the role of Edna in the musical version could have been one more opportunity for an LGBTQ+ actor. But, I hope you know that even though I liked Travolta's Edna, it doesn't mean I think any less of how important Divine's Edna is in cinematic history. Okay, on a different note (see what I did there?), I can't decide which I like more, Good Morning Baltimore or You Can't Stop the Beat.

taylor anne photo, who would you cast as Edna in the musical? I consider the original movie and the musical as different, separate things. The original is a classic and everyone should watch it. That said, I enjoyed the musical more. It was just full of joy and made me happy

I also thought Travolta's Edna was lovely (except for the choosing braised meat over her daughter's safety thing). I do think the facial prosthetics made him appear wooden at times, so maybe his eyes had to do the heavy lifting. That scene after she successfully negotiated the contract for Tracy, she's wearing a new sparkly dress and feeling on top of the world, and the look in her eyes when Velma destroys her with a simple "you'll stop traffic" - good lord, my heart broke for her.

That Tex Avery gif is perfect. Something that I didn't get - why were there only black kids in detention except for Tracy? Also, after detention, Tracy ends up back in class. Is there usually detention during normal school hours?

    Episode 152.5 - Minisode 152.5

Are we doing favorite John Carpenter movies? Mine is Big Trouble in Little China. I agree with Quasar Sniffer above that it's one of those perfect movies.

    Musical Mondays-Week 2-Hairspray

(You're) Timeless to Me was my favorite scene (maybe not necessarily my favorite song). Sorry for repeating, but Christopher Walken is so endearing in this scene. It's the little things that he does, like the way he looks at her or his little shimmies. Also, it cracks me up when Edna sings "so you'll wear a wig, while I roast a pig" and Christopher Walken says "I love pig" while laughing. I didn't get the sense that the musical was making fun of Edna's weight. If anything, I could relate to her love of pork products. BUT, what was going on with Travolta's accent? Is this how people really speak in Baltimore?
  7. Christopher Walken was delightful in this movie. One of my favorite scenes is when Tracy goes to find Wilbur sleeping by himself after the misunderstanding with Velma von Tussle, he moves around and farting noises are heard. He explains it's from a bed made up of whoopee cushions. Then, a separate farting noise is heard, but he says that this time it was him. It cracks me up because he didn't have to tell the truth about that, but does anyway. The main reason I love this character is that he has so much love for his family. He never stops encouraging Tracy to follow her dreams. On top of that, he's so in love with Edna. When they're singing You're Timeless to Me, you can practically see hearts shooting out of his eyes the way he looks at her. I was looking at the imdb page of the director, Adam Shankman, and his next project is Disenchanted. I had no idea there was a sequel planned for Enchanted, but I'm kind of loving that it's called Disenchanted.
  8. I'll watch it. James Marsden <3

    Top Ten Movies of 2016

    Co-signed.
  10. Something that I wish the movie mentioned is that Hedwig and Yitzhak were married. Hedwig met Yitzhak in Crotia, where he was a very talented drag queen. A bit too talented for Hedwig's ego. Yitzhak asked Hedwig to take him with her. Hedwig obliged, on the condition that Yitzhak never put on a wig, ie, give up performing as a drag queen. If this had been explained in the movie, I think the ending would've had more of an impact - when Hedwig gives the wig to Yitzhak.
  11. I saw the revival and Midnight Radio was the final song of the play. I'm glad they incorporated it into the revival because it's a great song.
  12. Interesting. I thought at the end, she was both Hedwig and Hansel. Two halves become one, like the song Origin of Love. She wonders about her other half earlier in the movie. She thinks it's another person, but I think her other half was just a different part of her. You might even say Tommy Gnosis was also Hedwig, since he was a persona that she created.
  13. You guys, what if Hansel never woke up from his surgery and the entire movie is a Jacob's Ladder situation?

Sounds good. I love Hedwig. ETA: Fun fact - Hedwig was successfully adapted for Korea.

Is Star Wars Holiday Special a musical? Strictly Ballroom isn't a musical, but it's the best Baz Luhrmann movie. I might have cried. ETA: This.

I loved The History of Future Folk. That's definitely a musical. Do animated movies count? And similar to Cameron's question, I was wondering if we had to choose movies that could be chosen for HDTGM.

I'm in! Do you have any criteria in mind for movies that qualify as a musical?

By the way, I just learned only a few days ago that his son is Sean Astin! Also, hope you can recommend some non-US musical movies in 2017.

    Episode 150 - Grease 2

Get out of my head, chico! I watched West Side Story tonight. Those fight scenes! Nobody rumbles like the Jets and the Sharks. Also, a C&O that nobody asked for, I would like to point out that a lot of the exterior scenes for West Side Story were filmed on the East Side.
