Episode 213 - Shanghai Surprise (w/ Jordan Rubin)
gigi-tastic replied to SlidePocket's topic in How Did This Get Made?
I'm dying be dive deeper into this idea of Jason's (or was it Paul?) that this is a Harry Potter prequel (mainly because this movie was awful and I'm ALWAYS down for Potter Talk). I don't think that time line works for this to be Vernon 's story but it might check if it's his father! It might explain why he's so against anything that isn't dull and boring because he grew up with an insane man for a father who was running around Shanghai in the 30's. I really wish we had watched a Harry Potter instead of this. -

I live in a town covered in train tracks and even after all these years in still surprised sometimes late at night to hear one. I wonder if I left for long enough on a vacation if I would miss them while I sleep? I know I can't sleep without a fan or the a/c blasting. Usually both in the summer because I'm always hot and I just don't sleep right now without the hum. -

The Steamles of Sodor sounds down right terrifying as a brand. Like it sounds like Sauron's warrior train army from hell. Frankly I personally find the current Thomas the Tank Engine face to be terrifying so that might just be me projecting. It's not Paw Patrol though and for that I am grateful. My best friend's toddler had three obsessions: real trains, Daniel Tiger, and Paw Patrol. The makers of Paw Patrol made a satanic pact of some kind I'm sure if it. -

Probably. I just assumed that she either died before or it was to commemorate her. I also like to think her ghost was just like fuck no I will be the best looking person in this bitch! As it should be honestly. All yearbooks should have a Mary Lou glamour shot honestly. -

I am torn on purgatory because on the Pro purgatory side we have her staunch deceleration of the absence of God and " no fucking wings! ". For a while I thought *maybe* she was stuck in the helllike blackboard realm and only truly gained corporeal form once she tricked Vickie into trading places with her as that's what usually happens in these situations. Someone must take the place of whoever is in the other realm / dead. The reason I'm torn between purgatory and hell ( blackboard land?) Is because of the Catholic imagery in the movie and the idea of mortal sins. I should mention in Agnostic and don't believe in hell except in extreme cases like... Crimes against humanity cases. As a Catholic Mary Lou would by church doctrine need to make a confession at least once a year / before her death. During her confession we see she says it's been 3 months since her last one. HOWEVER I can pretty much guarantee she was not given absolution during that particular visit and I would hazard a guess this isn't the first time she's been like that. (MY theory is her parents probably make her go to confession.) Also she tried to lure others to sin by writing her phone number in the confessional and according to Wikipedia that's a on the list of mortal sins (Encouragement of another's grave sins or vices). Speaking of that might be sacrilege? We do know when she died she had the sins of blasphemy ( taking the Lord's name in vain many times), disobeying her parents, and having sex ( Rock on with your bad self Mary Lou!), Encouragement of another's grave sins, sacrilege(?) 4 of these Mortal Sins. I'm gonna throw Mary Lou a hand and say the parents one was a venial sin . Meaning supposedly it just weakens your relationship with god. If you have Venial sins your purgatory bound vs mortal sins which equals hell. So she has gone to confessional in three months. Assuming she wasn't awesome and was contrite seeming she would have that absolution on her side. Maybe she landed in a hellish version of purgatory? -

I'm so angry right now. I just wrote a very long mini essay on 1. Where was Mary Lou in the afterlife and 2. If it was hell did she deserves to go there and my tablet ATE IT. I had sources I was referencing ancient Greek mythology, Dante, Catholicism it was a good nerdy time y'all! Anyway.... Discuss if I feel up to it I'll try to rewrite it though I doubt anyone wants to read the nerd facts as much as enjoy finding them -

I assume that she "woke up" maybe had to gain her power with time, slowly took over Vikie, tricked her into the blackboard realm, morphed into her and went about her way. -

I assumed that Vickie got HIM a promise ring for reasons? Because you know with her mom there's no way she's going to be raised that sex before marriage is ok. Maybe they went to a creepy purity ball or is that just for father's and dsughters? Because I'm sure kissing dad would be stoked for that.... -

I did find Vickie backhanding her to be particularly satisfying I will admit. Though I felt kind of bad for her watching her be sexually harassed by Potato Guy into a blowjob to win prom queen. I thought they were setting it up that she was going to become this generations Mary Lou and seek revenge in the sequel but too many people died for her death to be as traumatic in a way? But maybe her angry ghost doesn't see it like that and they class of 2017 had another killer prom? -

So the dad talks about how he took Vickie's mom to prom right before the incest make out sesh. Does that mean they went to the same school as Mary Lou and Hairline Bill? If so you would think seeing a girl go up in flames would have a lasting impression on you . Maybe that's why her mom is so insanely religious because she witnessed Mary Lou become a flambe. -

I hope she comes back for another episode and I'm honestly so happy to see her in a comedy again! She's actually got really great comedic timing as well as being a serious actor. -

So while yes Mary Lou is a simple bitch who is all about that crown and title of prom queen I think that her obsessive need to win and be crowned is a symbol for the life she lost. She says while making out with Principal Bill post power stance on his desk (honestly what a power move! ) something like she could have been anything. Being crowned prom queen is a stand in for that. She has her whole life ahead of her and she was on top of the world. All of that possibility was taken from her. She's never going to graduate, go to college, get a job... any of it. Everything she worked for is ash and it's all this fuckers fault. -

I just need to say this episode is officially one of my favorites of all time! So I don't know if it's because I saw the Moviebitches Retro Review of the movie before I saw the movie but I don't think the movie ( shout out to Avaryl for all her hard work! ) was pro religion. In fact I think that (and the Moviebitches mentioned this so I'm sort of stealing from them) that it's sort of a sly commentary on how in the end religion won't save you from your bad deeds. You can't use religion to excuse what you have done. I don't think that the priest was a fully changed person. Instead of feeling sympathy for Mary Lou and thinking about ways to put her spirit to rest , which to me seems more like something someone truly devoted to God would do he's going straight for the exorcism ( incorrectly it looked like) something that can only be performed wit permission from high up in the Church. I get that Mary Lou is out for blood here and it's a horror movie so in a sense he's not wrong. Also I want to note how great it is that it's the guy who fled to be a priest and not some poor girl traumatized and punished . Well I mean... Outside of Mary Lou. -
....they weren't?!

Mary Lou is a badass bitch and I am once again reminded why I don't trust carousel/ rocking horses. I can't wait for the episode!
