Episode 93: THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT

I was allowed to watch pretty much every "classic horror movie" when I was way too young and none of them freaked me the f*ck out like this one did. My parents could not convince me it was fake for months, I was just too young to wrap my mind around it. I hadn't watched it since, but then I rewatched a few years ago and I think this is a no-brainer for the Canon. So influential, so well made (this episode provided a ton of great insight), and still pretty tense and scary in a unique, interesting way. Let the snobs mock this movie for having nothing happen, but this is Canon-worthy.

    Episode #92: STAND BY ME

I have no nostalgia for Stand By Me. I did not grow up with this movie. I was born in the 90s, and only saw it one time on TV growing up and it did not really stick with me in any way. I remembered the leech scene, and that most of the kids were kind of annoying to me. I rewatched it again a few months ago with some friends (we were discussing essential coming of age movies, and they were both in disbelief I didn't consider Stand By Me as one of the classics), and I definitely enjoyed it more, but overall still did not find it anywhere near Canon Worthy. A pretty strong no from me.
  6. Episode was very good and nice and make laughs, but one thing I gotta ask: Who anonymous? He like banksy?

    Episode #90: PENNIES FROM HEAVEN

This was an episode where I truly came in on the fence. I watched it for the first time this week, and its merits and shortcomings are very obvious. I was truly interested in hearing Amy talk about it, to see whether or not she could convince me Pennies From Heaven deserved to be in the Canon. Major props to Amy, as she did a great job explaining why this movie is a success and works on so many levels. A soft yes vote for me.

    Episode #89: BLAZING SADDLES

As a younger person, I still voted an easy yes. Like most old comedies, there are some bizarre editing and pacing choices that don't work. But those moments are few and far between, and the laughs are huge. It's pretty incredible that a movie like this would really have no chance of being made today. Not everything ages well, but the vast majority of it does. Great blend of low-brow and high-brow. Huge yes.

    Who is your favorite Beatle?

I am a Paul fan myself. Really have been my whole life, as 'All My Loving' is the first "real" song I memorized, and subsequently sang constantly for weeks. I also think he has the strongest and deepest selection of songs, or at least my favorites. However, if someone prefers John or George, I totally get it, and the whole negativity of the Paul vs John debate has always seemed strange to me, as they clearly brought out the best (musically) and worst (on a personal level) in each other. The only pick I will never understand is Ringo, sorry Amy. If your claim to fame as a songwriter is 'Octopus's Garden,' you are clearly not the best Beatle.

    Episode #88: A HARD DAY'S NIGHT

Easy yes. This is one of the first movies I truly remember loving, and as an adult it holds up as well (if not better) than when I watched it as a kid. The chemistry and effortlessness from the fab four is amazing to watch, especially comparing it to almost any other musician trying to act in the history of movies. John is hammy, absurd, and hilarious. George has maybe some of the funniest line deliveries in the entire movie. I could watch Ringo mope around forever. Paul is a little subtle, but I actually think there is a charm to his performance. Great music. Great performances. Influential and stunning directing. So many amazing lines: "Sorry we hurt your field, mister." "I bet you're a great swimmer." "Books are good." "Paradin's better." "I fought the war for your kind." "Bet you're sorry you won." "Do you see your father often?" "No actually, we're just good friends."

    Who is your favorite Beatle?

In honor of A Hard Day's Night being considered for the Canon, along with Devin and Amy briefly discussing their own favorites, I thought I may as well throw the question out to the fans of the Canon: who is your favorite Beatle? Feel free to share who you voted for and why.

Episode 144 - Howard Kremer, Our Close Friend

Wow episode was really great. Loved Howl Kremer as a guest. Real fun and good and nice with my two favorite laugh boys. On an unrelated note, immediately after finishing the episode I bought 8 subscriptions to howl.fm and I couldn't be more excited. Did you know they offer over 150 hours of awesome content? Can't wait to take my nerd parties to the next level!

    Episode 86: BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S

Is the movie uneven? Sure. Could it be better? Absolutely. Does it teach some questionable lessons? Possibly. But this is an easy yes for me because Audrey Hepburn isn't just giving a great performance, she is giving an iconic performance that truly gets better with each viewing. If you replaced her with anyone else this movie would have been forgotten, but it is her, and so this movie 100% deserves a spot in the Canon
  15. Patty Walsh back on Hollywood Handbook? FEELIN IT! (That's right. I made a fucking You Made It Weird reference on HH forums. I ain't scared of any podcast wars. (for real though can we get Pete Holmes back on HH. Would love to hear Sean really come at him for how dangerous and evil religion can actually be. (After all religion has been responsible for most of the wars in this world. The number one killer!)))
