Yes, please! I adore THE PALM BEACH STORY & THE LADY EVE. I recently watched a 7-film boxset of his, and in every movie I could see the Coen brothers eating this up.

I love Hepburn, this isn't one of my favorites, but I'm interested to hear what they say.

This was my favorite episode of The Canon (so far) & the one i've been waiting for. It's THERE WILL BE BLOOD for me. I can't really quantify what it is about this movie that works for me so deeply. I took a friend to see it last month and she very much enjoyed it but couldn't understand why I'm in love with it. It just works for me. I was 17 when it came out (I'm aging myself, I'm 26) and I saw it in the theatre, while it wasn't THE movie for me that got me into film more seriously, it was a huge milestone for me. It sat with me from 17 to 26 without rewatching it once. I've watched it twice this year, three all together and I can't know this movie enough. This doesn't take anything away from BOOGIE NIGHTS, which I love, and sits second for me for PTA, who is my all time favorite. I can't wait for this alleged PTA-Daniel Day reteaming that is rumored. Perhaps in 2017, another ten years after TWBB, and 20 from BOOGIE...

amen, I think PTA is a very smart guy and knew what he was doing; I don't think he was just being a mimic. That's just me.

THERE WILL BE BLOOD is my favorite movie of all time. I had the pleasure of seeing it projected on 35mm last month in Chicago. It was incredible. I honestly think that over time it will be one of those movies like VERTIGO and the likes that gets reevaluated by critics and those Sight & Sound/bbc/AFI lists. (This movie didn't crack the latest BBC 100 best American films, but THE DARK KNIGHT did..which I like, but come on..) BOOGIE NIGHTS is probably in my top 25 movies too, but every time it gets brought up with movie people, it's hard not to bring up GOODFELLAS or NASHVILLE and for some I think it makes it hard to view it as its own film, which, I do think it's a beautiful film about family. I can see why pitting these two makes sense, it's his two finest pictures: his best from his Altman-fast paced-flashy camera work era and one from his subdued Kubrickian/coming into his own PTA aesthetic. I just love his work. This episode will be fun and sad. Woohoo!

Love it or hate it, I think Scream may deserve at least an episode -- not saying whether it should be in the Canon. I know that's not post-2000. I agree with Head Spin on the few he's named. They're at least worth discussion.

Heavyweights

So, we all know that big trend for movie studios: building cinematic universes. We're still in the thick of it now, but certainly in the future there will be a chapter in film studies text books about serialized films and cinematic universes, for better or worse, took off with gusto in the late 2000s w/ Iron Man. So my question is: does the historical context (keeping in mind that yes, it's too early to tell but this is just for fun, like the podcast is anyway) of the Marvel Cinematic Universe kicking off this trend grant one or more of it's films into The Canon? Which MCU film or films would you welcome into The Canon? I'm actually not a huge Marvel movie fan, I haven't seen them all, but I do think that it's an interesting time for blockbusters and that they're doing some really cool stuff. My vote would be The Avengers (2012)

It's cool, man! I'm just trying to generate more discussion posts that aren't straight "Suggestion" ones, you know? It all remains to be seen, but I think eventually these comic book movies will become their own genre like Western, musical, noir etc. and The Canon seems like it could/should (maybe) represent something like that, and since this shared universe thing is booming now, yeah...I'm trailing off. That's a fair point though about Toho daikaiju, though. Anyway, I'm just trying to keep the board active, and myself at work for that matter.

naw, I qualified this as being for a fun discussion. I'm just sparking discussion, and even specifically said that I understand that it was too early to tell. And sure, it's nothing new, but those "cinematic universes" are miles different than what I'm talking about. Jay and Silent Bob popping up in Mallrats isn't the same as the serialized storytelling Marvel is doing; and Vincent and Vic Vega having the same name isn't really the same thing either; and neither of those kicked off these major trends of studios scrambling to replicate it.

Some Like It Hot for me. I like Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and I agree with the historical argument for launching one of the most iconic actresses of all time, but I think Wilder made a much stronger film from start to finish, and I know there will be more Hawks & Wilder down the road, they've earned it, but when looking at The Canon it's Wilder here. I read somewhere that someone said Monroe in this film was the closest she was to playing herself, and it's a shame they both couldn't make it, because it's an interesting idea to watch the Marilyn the public remembers vs. the more honest Marilyn. I hadn't seen it either, and watched it Monday night. I didn't hate it, I thought it was quite enjoyable, but I think Some Like It Hot is a shoe-in now, if it were being inducted on its own, I'd wouldn't call it a shoe-in. I would've liked to see Gentlemen Prefer Blondes vs. Funny Face. I'd like to see more musicals up!
