    The Canon Is On Hiatus

^^^ That has to be the most dramatic exit from a podcast I've seen a listener make.

    Future of the Show?

I know that Earwolf's tweet said "we hope that future episodes will happen" but I wouldn't take that as confirmation. I doubt Amy will continue under The Canon brand, and she probably shouldn't. I guess I'll keep checking this forum for a while, but it seems unlikely that activity will continue without a podcast. Look at me! http://letterboxd.com/catandbeard/

Homework: Welcome to the Dollhouse (1995)

It's definitely the easiest Solondz film to watch, though I'm not sure if it's a "best". Least abrasive, maybe? Dawn Weiner is a terrific character that I think everyone can identify with. I enjoy Solondz a lot, because I don't think he ever mocks his characters or uses the incredibly difficult situations he puts them in to just shock. It's not exploitation, though it does ride a very fine line at times -- the one time he's probably failed is with the Scooby/Paul Giamatti stuff in Storytelling.

    Future of the Show?

So, in the event that this forum is abandoned, where else do all y'all talk movies? I post on the HDTGM forum here on Earwolf, a little bit on reddit/r/truefilm, and have a Letterboxd. I rarely post on AV Club or BMD because the communities are so large; I've enjoyed the intimacy of smaller forums like this one, which has had some incredibly articulate and thoughtful commenters. I'd be sad to see this go.

    Future of the Show?

I feel like the entire US and online world has been on full alert mode since Friday. I nearly had a panic attack watching last night's debate. Every Internet forum is crazy right now. In this atmosphere of heightened tension, I feel as though what's best at this moment is for onlookers to reserve their opinions and judgments, however well-intentioned. I think that approach supports both parties. *I'm voting for Amy, though.
  7. Been a while, but wasn't the story that vampirism was an epidemic that had spread over the last couple of decades? So the world's infrastructure wasn't prepared to handle the blood needs of millions (billions?) of vampires. They didn't "take over". It was a cool premise; I like it when supernatural/paranormal elements are treated matter of factly, with real world consequences thought out -- unlike something like Vampire Academy, which begins to unravel completely when you start considering the world outside the school.

    The Greasy Strangler (2016)

I didn't see it, but assumed it was a Tim & Eric thing. Almost to the point of plagiarism, the style is so specific.

    Good Burger (1997)

"Lacks in quality"? This movie fuckin rules. I watched it not that long ago and it was even better than I remembered.

    Episode 144 - Stealth

Man, I don't mean to shit talk, but Lukas Haas looks kinda rough for 40 years old. Jamie Foxx's youthful energy would make anyone look older, I guess.

    Capturing the Friedmans

I liked the Jarecki series because of the way he inserted himself and his crew. It felt, to me, like an attempt attempt at transparency, revealing the weird relationship of documentarian and subject. Responsibility of the filmmaker is a subject rarely broached in the genre; most actively try to ignore it. So many true crime documentaries have almost comically biased perspectives that are often passed off as benign formalism.

    The Wicker Man (1973)

Would absolutely be a yes from me. Not only for being a quintessentially 70s slow burner, but also for its uniquely English Isles sensibility. Filmed in Scotland, containing music based on the poems of Scottish icon Robert Burns, and with an underlying theme of English Christian imperialism vs Scottish indigenous identity. The soundtrack has been influential on the British folk of the 1970s, notably Pentangle, whose members have performed the music in recent times, as well as neo-folk groups like Espers and White Magic. (All these elements were absent in the 2006 American remake, rendering the film mostly pointless.) A pagan classic elevated by some fine performances and a seminal soundtrack. The final scene is one of my favorite moments in any film ever, as Sgt Howie's faith is shaken as he begins to burn -- his screams are truly terrifying.

Homework: A Face in the Crowd (1957)

This Wednesday on TCM at 8:00pm EST. Sometimes people tweet along with #tcmparty or #tcm.

    The Neon Demon (2016)

No, I totally got that, it's pretty easy to understand. I just found it a really banal and obvious point, and there wasn't anything else going on to sustain my interest. I enjoyed Jena Malone's performance, but the film was mostly tedious.

    Cloak and Dagger (1984)

I loved this movie as a kid because of the video game connection, but also because I could identify with a young boy whose father is such a shit that he hallucinates a cool version of him. (((((

Episode 95: STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN

I feel that as long as Devin is directing BirthMoviesDeath readers to vote on these polls, there's little chance of any film NOT making it into the canon (at least, of the ones which he supports). This isn't a dig on him at all. It's just from the overall tone of the discussion here, I'd expect a more even result, if not an outright "no".

    Monster in the Closet

I think he meant to post this in the HDTGM forum. Troma is a marvel of indie filmmaking and American entrepreneurship, but if there was ever a Lloyd Kaufman film that needed to be canonized, it would surely be The Toxic Avenger.

    An American Werewolf in London

Jenny Agutter, Nazi werewolves, and some of the best vfx work ever! And one of the best music cues of all time. A genre classic.

Episode 95: STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN

Art isn't created or consumed devoid of context, and anyone who claims otherwise is full of doodoo. Context is absolutely critical to understanding and appreciation. It's not the only contribution to this nebulous "merit" but it's a big chunk you can't take out.

    Homework: The Bad Seed (1956)

Morality drama? Thriller? It's basically what Lifetime movies are today.

Episode 95: STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN

I hope you're not implying that anyone here is attacking Amy or Devin, especially not by reposting tweets. Someone accused Amy of "not getting it" but things have been pretty civil. By the way, have you noticed how small Devin's hands are? What's he hiding under that beard, anyways?
