When Harry Met Sally vs. Die Hard
RobertBoberts replied to GregSaunders's topic in Movie Suggestions
Three Amigos versus Three Men and a Baby because they came out a year apart and are both about 3 men who get into a situation they are not prepared for. -
Frankenstein versus Bride of Frankenstein would also be a good one.
-
Keep it to two or preferably one unless there's a good reason. I do like Night of the Living Dead vs. Dawn of the Dead but falls into the same argument given for Star Wars beating Empire.
-
Versus the Maltese Falcon? I do think people overdue it with the versus suggestions but yeah Casablanca is such a shoe-in that it needs to be a little interesting.
-
Charade with her and Cary Grant is really good. I like Roman Holiday too.
-
Wow so weird that I was just thinking of requesting an Audrey Hepburn versus episode.
-
Repo Man, Robocop and Brazil are all Canon worthy. Better Off Dead and Three O'clock High would be a fun versus.
-
Also, people had a hard time finding anywhere to watch Kiki's Delivery Service. Hell, I never even heard of it before.
-
Yes, I love this movie, but now that I think about it, I'm not sure this would be an interesting discussion for most people. I could talk about camera placement and length of shots in concert footage all day but I have already learned that people are bored by that.
-
I started off thinking it was a little boring but by the end I was so into it that I immediately watched it a second time. Its honestly my favorite film from that year with There Will Be Blood and No Country for Old Men at numbers 2 and 3. I usually don't make lists but all 3 movies were amazing and stood out for that year.

Suggestion: Monty Python and the Holy Grail vs. Life of Brian
RobertBoberts replied to JonHillman's topic in Movie Suggestions
I showed Life of Brian for a movie night and most of my guests had never seen it. It was one of the favorites of the whole season and the laughter didn't stop. I guess I should do Holy Grail this fall and see how that compares. (I do movies on a video projector in my living room weekly but not in summer, except for occasional backyard movies.) -
I have definitely watched Boogie Nights many more times than There Will Be Blood. They're both great movies but that is kind of an easy indicator of how hard it will be to vote against Boogie Nights. I remember seeing it in the theater.

I agree with The Others being a good canon nominee. I just watched it two days ago actually. I also wonder how a discussion on the Sixth Sense would go. Shyamalan's later movies mostly seem to be ridiculed for being silly stories that rely on a twist but at one time he had the most popular movie of the summer. Is it canon? I would have thought that before seeing his later work. I haven't seen it in awhile so I'm not sure how I'd feel about it now.

I liked Frances Ha a lot and could identify with her in some way. But then maybe I'm partly identitying with the men who interact with her. I think it's why a lot of romantic comedies center on the male character. They figure it gets both men and women to view it, at least as a date movie, as opposed to films like Sex in the City.

I guess after listening to this week's episode, I couldn't help but think of my own love for the Return of the Living Dead. Probably not canon, but having never seen Re-Animator before I was also kind of confused as to why it was being considered.

Elmer Gantry vs A Face in the Crowd
RobertBoberts replied to DankestBiscuit's topic in Movie Suggestions
Funny, I watched both Ace in the Hole and A Face in the Crowd back to back the first time I saw either of them. Good versus, but I have a hard time voting against Billy Wilder. Would love to have either as a stand alone as well. More people need to see this early Andy Griffith classic. -
It was produced by Amazon but had limited release in theaters and wasn't even on Amazon yet when it was inducted. But for most of us, it's strictly straight to VOD. But I have no problem with considering such a movie. I mean it's Spike Lee. Just wish they had waited until people had a chance to see it.

I would side with Life of Brian but boy would this be a great discussion. -
Coming To America vs. Trading Places
RobertBoberts replied to RossHolzschuh's topic in Movie Suggestions
It's been brought up before and I still think this would be a great versus episode. -
Since we regard Netflix series as TV, does that mean that Netflix original movies should be regarded as made-for-TV? I thnk I'm on board with considering HBO movies to be real films so why not Netflix and Amazon? Maybe it's the network restrictions on content that make me think of broadcast TV movies as somehow not real films. But maybe this concept is not as clear in an era of digital films going straight to video since it's more difficult these days to get distribution in theaters.

I wrote a paper on Happiness for a film class. Never felt so uncomfortable writing about a movie before, so yeah, I would love to hear that episode.
-
That's a good versus. I think The Omen would be good against either of those as well. The original of course.

I only now discovered I could get this on Blu ray from the library. It'll be a week before my request gets it delivered to my library, so I guess I'll be too late to vote. Wish it had been Spirited Away though.

Perhaps I missed it but there's been 80 podcasts and I believe not a single Kurosawa film has been nominated. Might I suggest Ikiru rather than the obvious Seven Samurai?

This movie didn't do well but has started to gain a following over the past 9 years. It seems that people were so used to terrible spoofs like Epic Movie, Scary Movie 4 and the like that this kind of slid by when in theaters. Is anyone else a fan of this movie?
