I watched "There Will Be Blood" for the first time last night and I have to completely discredit myself and my opinions: The movie left me completely cold. I get that the directing is perfect, the acting amazing, the cinematography beautiful, the writing full of important themes and very artistic - but I don't care about anything in the movie. Sadly, there were moments where I even found DDL's performance to be almost a parody of his acting (maybe because I have seen the parodies of his performance first?). The story and the characters - to me - are just not very engaging. I need a minimum of sympathy for the characters to be interested in a movie, and there's just nothing there for me. I don't even find them particularly fascinating. Those people are so completely separate from my world and I have no way to relate to any of them (aside from H.W.). And I felt very obviously and annoyingly manipulated by the music. It was near perfect in conveying a permanent feel of dread - but I knew very well WHY I felt uncomfortable and I didn't feel the movie earned this, particularly in the first act. OK, now people can make fun of me...

Ok if indulgence is about things you love but are not necessarily great, I would probably nominate "A Knight's Tale" - it just such a wonderful stupid movie. I also have a very soft spot for Mel Gibson's "Maverick" - but I won't even try to argue for that "movie"!

I never watched anime before and I have to say I was very impressed by the movie. It's so subtle and so impactful at the same time. I was really moved by it!

Well, Jaws definitely belongs into the canon. I don't know if there's any discussion possible ;-)

I admit it's a little gimmicky but I think contrasting the two movies could be very interesting, especially the leads, the stylization and the two endings...

Not a takedown - but I do think this would be an overly complicated process for an entertainment podcast. A simple "yes" or "no", that's easily understandable, that's catchy, that's interesting. It boils down the whole thing to a very dramatic conclusion fitting a podcast. Because in the end it doesn't *really* matter what goes into the canon and what is left behind - it's "just" a cool gimmick to make us feel ownership and be involved. And it's doing a damn good job at that.

Had to register to vote on this. I was honestly baffled by the hate for this film. It's not perfect, but it's a really good and important movie...
