FYI anyone with $700 to spare looking to own a replica mask of the "only survivor of Totenkopf's experiments," you are in luck: -

It also reminds me of "Skytanic," one of my favorite episodes of Archer. Cuz of all the dirigibles. -
Episode 189 - Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow: LIVE!

Paul kept asking about Sky Captain's profession and asked the nagging question "What is a sky captain?" I want to address this, but the answer involves one of the weirder aspects of this alternate 40s US ... weirder than the three generations of Hinderburgs and the British accents of New Yorkers. First, I think it's obvious that "Sky Captain" is not a profession or a thing ... it's just Joe's superhero name. The public calls him "Sky Captain" just like it calls Tony Stark "Iron Man." But the thing is, "Sky Captain" is not a superhero ... he's a mercenary. The news broadcast clearly states that the city is waiting on Sky Captain "and his army-for-hire." Army-for-hire means mercenaries. Sky Captain is in it for the money, and some way some how probably expects to be paid for all the hero work he's doing. That's how he funds his tricked out dogfighter and his cool base with a huge hanger and cannons and a crackerjack weapons development/radio triangulation/gum chewing wing for his best friend/sidekick/submissive. And in this alternate reality, there appears to be NO standing military of any kind. When the robots attack, we see a few cops firing tommy guns at them but otherwise, no one is doing anything to combat them except for Sky Captain. Again, the radio news guy immediately puts all the city's hopes squarely on Sky Captain, which implies that that is standard procedure because they have no army. The modern day equivalent of this would be if we had to call in Blackwater in emergency situations. And we see Sky Captain breaking some pretty severe rules of engagement like firing weapons and dropping bombs in highly populated areas and flying 10 feet above paved city roads. He's a cavalier merc with a million dollar operation and no overseeing regulatory body that the whole country relies upon for its security. How and why, in a world where Germany is wrangling secret cabals of scientists and Britain has a fucking armada of flying aircraft carriers, has this been allowed to happen? -

It's mighty hard to get to that last half hour without falling asleep though. How is a movie with 40's style dog fight combat and giant killer robots with laserbeam eyes so boring? -

It's pretty clear that Parker Posey and Alan Cumming do not value human life. Remember the girl from the store that they kidnap and perform experiments on? Man, Huntington High School fucked the two of them right up, didn't it? -

My 2-year-old accidentally rented Treasure of the Sierra Madre when she had gotten ahold of the Firestick remote, so we watched it and I loved it. Again, it's one of those that you don't realize gets referenced everywhere.

Not to mention Parker Posey and Eugene Levy from all the Christopher Guest movies that had their heyday around that time (they even made fun Levy's odd turn-of-the-millennium fame). I only wish they could have found a bit part for Catherine O'Hara. -

My previous comment notwithstanding, I really enjoyed this movie. Just like Quasar said on the other board, I was too into being cool and morose and edgy to give this flick the time of day when it came out, but I think I would have loved it even then. It was smart and funny and subversive and the music was good. This movie even made me like Tara Reid for a moment. -

It's possible that the joke wasn't lost -- it was just overdone. Or maybe the critics just assumed that the ads were paid for, because that's what I thought, too ... at least, some of them. The aquarium Evian ad was obviously a joke, and at one point I think Val hits her head and the camera moved to an Advil ad, or something, which is all very funny, but it gets fatiguing at a certain point because there are many 5 total minutes of screen time that doesn't feature an ad. Now, knowing that ads weren't paid for just makes me wonder why they didn't use ads for fake products. The jokes would've have still landed, and it wouldn't have gotten so tiresome. They might've gotten away with fewer overall advertising sight gags, too. I don't know how many of us are gamers, but it reminds me of games like Lollipop Chainsaw and Bayonetta which feature hypersexualized female characters, and the creators frequently try to excuse that by saying "Well, we're just parodying the hypersexualized female characters in video games," which is great, but at some point a spoof can become the genuine article. In the movie, sometimes the ads were clearly jokes, but other times, the ads were just there, being ads. -

Damn, I'm behind. I'm at 55 on the 2007 list. Most are from the old B&W/silent era but there are a couple, like Lawrence, Network, and Ben-Hur that I'm a bit ashamed to admit never seeing, but like Paul with CK, I felt like they were ubiquitous enough to say that I basically get the gist. I know I'm way wrong about that but ...

My memory exactly. -
I think Shakespeare is a perfect comparison to Citizen Kane. I go to the theater quite often, and there are many things I would probably rather sit through than Shakespeare, but you can't deny how good most of Shakespeare's work is ... every line is both revelatory of the speaker and well-wrought as an English sentence. Plus his every work is ubiquitous in culture ... you'll find references to it everywhere. I also would agree that "most influential" can put a work high in the running for "best overall," too. Sure, there are probably other movies I would rather watch that CK, and a few I would say are better films, overall, but that has a lot to do with the fact that the film-making medium has matured another 75+ years since CK was made. But CK codified just about every rule about how films are made. Many films at the time were approached with a stodgy "filmed stage production" feel, and Welles brought such a fresh and innovative feel to his films that his work proved transformative. Citizen Kane totally deserves the #1 spot. Great first episode!

Granted, I only have one child, and compared to many children my little girl is an angel from heaven made of Happy Fun Sunshine, but I feel like the list of jobs that could be harder than taking a kid to the zoo might be pretty long. -

I was shocked that a movie about dancing and children and being true to your crew contained so much cursing that at one point they had to ADR over a few scenes to edit the profanity out. I first thought this movie was going to be closer to RAD! than Saturday Night Fever, but it seems like they were really going for something more adult. -

I'd say he was trying to do a "Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder" thing, except TSD came first. Perhaps Cruise was inspired by Gibson on that front. Which is funny because someone has already mentioned that this movie was part of RDJ's comeback, and I'd always held Tropic Thunder responsible for that. I think there are multiple ways we can blame TSD for the existence of Tropic Thunder. -
